Book Habitat Preferences and Distribution of Mammals in California Chaparral

Download or read book Habitat Preferences and Distribution of Mammals in California Chaparral written by Ronald D. Quinn and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty-nine species of mammals regularly occur in California chaparral, but none lives only in chaparral. Among the 49 species, 7 are found primarily in mature chaparral, 9 in young chaparral or along ecotones between chaparral and other plant communities, and 19 in riparian areas. Five species occur in many habitats but prefer chaparral in California, and 9 have wide ranges that encompass many communities including chaparral. By altering the structure of the plant community, fire in chaparral is important in determining the distribution and abundance of mammalian populations. Fire is not permanently destructive to the mammalian fauna. Wildlife habitat can be optimized by maintaining chaparral in many age classes, by restricting fuel reduction treatments to 1 to 100 ha, by protecting all trees, and by enhancing water sources. A given area of chaparral and contains two to four common, and two to nine total, species of rodents. Seeds, fruits, and young vegetative growth are the most important plant foods in chaparral. Only 12 species of mammals are endemic to chaparral because of the limited opportunity in both time and space for speciation to occur. Only kangarro rats (Dipodomys) and chipmunks (Eutamias) have speciated in chaparral.

Book San Bernardino Mountain Trails

Download or read book San Bernardino Mountain Trails written by John W. Robinson and published by Wilderness Press. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern California's highest and most rugged mountains are in the San Bernardino and San Jacinto ranges, in a unique region where desert cactus and pine trees, plus snow-capped peaks and palm oases, are found in close proximity. With the Pacific Crest Trail weaving its way through the mountains and desert, there are endless opportunities to explore Southern California trails. After more than 40 years in print, San Bernardino Mountain Trails remains the bible for Southern California hikers. This updated guide by veteran hiker and author David Money Harris contains new trips as well as old favorites -- 100 hikes that traverse San Bernardino National Forest, the Santa Rosa Mountains, and the San Jacinto Mountains. This edition brings John Robinson's classic guide up to date with the latest trail conditions. Eight old trails, especially in areas that have become overgrown after fire damage, have been replaced with recently built or more heavily used trails. San Bernardino Mountain Trails is noted for its comprehensive coverage of the San Bernardino, San Jacinto, and Santa Rosa Mountains and its meticulously researched history of the ranges.
