Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How could Mama know, when she first met her future in-laws, what a horrible life she would endure? It is true that the Gamils rudely rejected the young Jewess and that Papa's fervor cooled after that meeting; but, by that time Mama was already entangled in a relentless web that would ultimately destroy her. A puzzling network of religious hatred, it became one that haunted me and my seven siblings throughout our lives in Algeria, later in my life in America and, finally, called me back to Castiglione to seek out the weaver of this tapestry: my father, Sébastien Gamil.

Book Don t Ever Call Me Mother

Download or read book Don t Ever Call Me Mother written by Helen Martin and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-05-04 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first six years of Helen Martin’s life, living on a Saskatchewan farm in the 1950s, were idyllic. But everything changed when her mother passed away. The sudden and inexplicable cruelty and neglect that Helen endured at the hands of her stepmother—a much younger woman her father married within months of being widowed—are the subject of this distressing, but ultimately triumphant, memoir: Don’t Ever Call Me Mother: Homeless in my Own Home. In a voice that is clear, courageous, guileless, honest, and hopeful, Helen captures the innocence and bewilderment of her childhood. She shares with readers the various ways in which she managed to cope and endure the terrible trauma of her youth. At the same time, Helen uses the pages of this memoir to pay homage to her Ukrainian culture and traditions. She especially highlights the few individuals who offered her kindness and support at a time when she was so often hungry, cold, lonely, bruised, and unwashed: her two older sisters, a couple of neighbours, and an elderly hobo who became her best friend. Such unexpected and enriching relationships make all the difference in a young life and are explored here with feeling. This beautiful memoir serves as both a testament to the author’s resilience and a reminder that childhood abuse of any kind must never be tolerated.

Book Land of Promise Land of Tears

Download or read book Land of Promise Land of Tears written by Jerry L. Twedt and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is 1869 and Ole and Helena Branjord are Norwegian immigrants attempting to make a new life on forty acres of central Iowa farmland. Ole is a kind, gentle man who questions his ability to provide for his family. Helena is pining for a real house, but has sadly learned through her past experiences that promises, no matter how sincere, are never certain. But Ole has lofty dreams to prove all the naysayers wrong and double his farmstead. The Branjord children each possess talents and challenges. Eleven-year-old Oline loves music. Martin is intelligent beyond his eight years. Four-year-old Berent wants to wear pants instead of the dresses Norwegian custom dictates he don every day. Populating the Branjords world are other immigrants that include a giant, strong man who can make a violin sing; a Civil War veteran with disfiguring physical scars; and members of the local Lutheran church determined to save their congregation. But among all the good is one enemy from Helenas past who wants nothing more than to destroy the Branjords. Twedts well-researched novel deserves to be awarded a place next to Rolvaag's work on the book shelves of home, public, and college libraries. It is apparent that Twedt has devoted many years to perfecting his craft as a storyteller. Brad Steiger

Download or read book Just Above My Head written by James Baldwin and published by Delta. This book was released on 2000-06-13 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Baldwin’s final novel is “the work of a born storyteller at the height of his powers” (The New York Times Book Review). “Not everything is lost. Responsibility cannot be lost, it can only be abdicated. If one refuses abdication, one begins again.” The stark grief of a brother mourning a brother opens this stunning, unforgettable novel. Here, in a monumental saga of love and rage, James Baldwin goes back to Harlem, to the church of his groundbreaking novel Go Tell It on the Mountain, to the forbidden passion of Giovanni’s Room, and to the political fire that enflames his nonfiction work. Here, too, the story of gospel singer Arthur Hall and his family becomes both a journey into another country of the soul and senses—and a living contemporary history of black struggle in this land.

Book Verse Going Viral

  • Author : Heather Inwood
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press
  • Release : 2014-06-23
  • ISBN : 0295805102
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Verse Going Viral written by Heather Inwood and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verse Going Viral examines what happens when poetry, a central pillar of traditional Chinese culture, encounters an era of digital media and unabashed consumerism in the early twenty-first century. Heather Inwood sets out to unravel a paradox surrounding modern Chinese poetry: while poetry as a representation of high culture is widely assumed to be marginalized to the point of “death,” poetry activity flourishes across the country, benefiting from China’s continued self-identity as a “nation of poetry” (shiguo) and from the interactive opportunities created by the internet and other forms of participatory media. Through a cultural studies approach that treats poetry as a social rather than a purely textual form, Inwood considers how meaning is created and contested both within China’s media-savvy poetry scenes and by members of the public, who treat poetry with a combination of reverence and ridicule. As the first book to deal explicitly with the discourses and functioning of scenes within the Chinese cultural context, Verse Going Viral will be of value to students and scholars of Chinese literature, cultural studies, and media, as well as to general readers interested in China's dynamic cultural scenes.

Book Tears of a Son

Book excerpt: "Tears of a Son" is a compilation of poetry for anyone who has ever experienced love, joy, lost, hurt, and pain. This book shows that there are other ways to find inner self. It was written through the eyes and mind of the author after a series of emotionally draining events, which greatly impacted his life for the better. It is Godwin's unique outlook on life as he came to a crossroad after trying to do things on his own; he turned to God for answers and it was revealed to him that the pen is stronger than the sword. Once he acknowledged God, the Lord worked through his life, towards a brighter future, with the power of words to set him free. He wants the inspire others to find their outlet to express themselves in positive ways, seeking God for guidance in their lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bitter/Sweet: Surviving the Struggle Within describes my efforts to face the fears and pain of love and self-love, sickness and health, death and spirituality, and forgiveness. It also expresses my hope to find the answers to life’s questions. First I had to acknowledge self, because without self-acknowledgement, every obstacle will magnify. In understanding what makes me tick and how my past could hold me back, I learned to love myself, which allowed me to find true love. Bitter poisons that once flowed through my veins, are now replaced with the sweet taste of honey. My agonies, frustrations, and pain took me on one excursion after another. The only true journey toward growth and fulfillment is tunneling through the many avenues of self. I had to go within before I could move forward. I had to master this expedition. No matter what I seek, everything I need is already inside me. Am I important enough to myself to go within and search for what I want and need? It is what I choose to accept about my life that will make it “Bitter” or “Sweet.” And I realize that I am not alone. Everyone experiences pain and discord. I hope my words reach others so they too can rejoice. I have learned to celebrate the child within to overcome past hurts and all the old “Bitter/Sweet” experiences. This chronicles where I have been, where I am today, and what I have accomplished.
