Book Europe and Empire

Download or read book Europe and Empire written by Henry Frendo and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 850 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a first sustained effort to render an understanding of Maltese history, especially that of the 1920s and 1930s, from an Italian as well as a British (and naturally a Maltese) perspective. The British National Archives, as the Public Record Office at Kew has come to be known, is a superbly well-organised and relatively easily accessible power-house, where to work is a delight. However, the author was fortunate to have been given permission by Sig. Giulio Andreotti, then Minister of Foreign Affairs, to gain full access to the "Fascist" archive at Palazzo della Farnesina in Rome. When going through the stacks of documents in the late 1980s and early 1990s, its Malta sections clearly had been largely untouched, given the amount of rusty and firmly stuck paper clips and one or two vitally revealing sealed envelopes that he had to deal with, sometimes misleadingly indexed or unindexed. It brought back some memories of earlier delving into hitherto barely looked at papers or enclosures, including photographs, in the 1970s in Portugal Street (before Kew existed), with regard to an earlier period. Given the pivotal role played by Italy no less than by Britain in Malta's modern history, a rendering of Maltese history only or mainly from British sources is unbalanced and does not do it full justice. This is also true the other way round, more so when access to Maltese, English or even French sources is limited for reasons of language or otherwise. Improved Internet access to journal articles and other published sources, recently also made available to members of the academic corps and other researchers by the University of Malta Library, should help lessen breakdowns in communication, naturally always depending on linguistic competences and the right keywords.

Book The languages of Malta

    Book Details:
  • Author : Albert Gatt
  • Publisher : Language Science Press
  • Release : 2018
  • ISBN : 3961100705
  • Pages : 317 pages

Download or read book The languages of Malta written by Albert Gatt and published by Language Science Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this volume is to present a snapshot of the state of the art of research on the languages of the Maltese islands, which include spoken Maltese, Maltese English and Maltese Sign Language. Malta is a tiny, but densely populated country, with over 422,000 inhabitants spread over only 316 square kilometers. It is a bilingual country, with Maltese and English enjoying the status of official languages. Maltese is a descendant of Arabic, but due to the history of the island, it has borrowed extensively from Sicilian, Italian and English. Furthermore, local dialects still coexist alongside the official standard language. The status of English as a second language dates back to British colonial rule, and just as in other former British colonies, a characteristic Maltese variety of English has developed. To these languages must be added Maltese Sign Language, which is the language of the Maltese Deaf community. This was recently recognised as Malta’s third official language by an act of Parliament in 2016. While a volume such as the present one can hardly do justice to all aspects of a diverse and complex linguistic situation, even in a small community like that of Malta, our aim in editing this book was to shed light on the main strands of research being undertaken in the Maltese linguistic context. Six of the contributions in this book focus on Maltese and explore a broad range of topics including: historical changes in the Maltese sound system; syllabification strategies; the interaction of prosody and gesture; the constraints regulating /t/-insertion; the productivity of derivational suffixes; and raising phenomena. The study of Maltese English, especially with the purpose of establishing the defining characteristics of this variety of English, is a relatively new area of research. Three of the papers in this volume deal with Maltese English, which is explored from the different perspectives of rhythm, the syntax of nominal phrases, and lexical choice. The last contribution discusses the way in which Maltese Sign Language (LSM) has evolved alongside developments in LSM research. In summary, we believe the present volume has the potential to present a unique snapshot of a complex linguistic situation in a geographically restricted area. Given the nature and range of topics proposed, the volume will likely be of interest to researchers in both theoretical and comparative linguistics, as well as those working with experimental and corpus-based methodologies. Our hope is that the studies presented here will also serve to pave the way for further research on the languages of Malta, encouraging researchers to also take new directions, including the exploration of variation and sociolinguistic factors which, while often raised as explanatory constructs in the papers presented here, remain under-researched.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Description of Malta and Gozo Fior del Mondo is the ardent language of the love of our country, and though Malta, which has received this superlative appellation from its devoted children, is but a rock, yet "a rock is a rock" all the world through; while the glory of the sky which overlooks Malta, the noble port which indents its rugged margin, as also the peculiarity of its position with regard to neighbouring tracts of the earth, render it altogether a rock singularly interesting, and of vast intrinsic importance. The sky, and air, and country of Malta is A frican; but its life and civilization is European. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Guide to Malta and Gozo Formerly the bulwark of Christendom a gainst the bloody banner of Islamism and in fidelity, and exerting a salutary influence o'er the desolations of Africa, giving also decisive checks to the infamous piracies of the Barbary coast, Malta. Now also, in our own times, exerts a still nobler becausea moral influence, upon the shores of the Mediterranean, and occupies under the benign and all powerful flag of Great Britain, a prouder attitude than even during the most renowned days of her chivalrous story, under the sovereignty of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. A writer, then, who attempts some illustra tion of the past and present history of so re markable a country as Malta, together with the peculiar features of its social and political state, however humble his efforts, or eon tracted his plan, may venture, without the slightest charge of arrogance, to anticipate theblgood wishes and the support of the pu te.
