Book Under the Volcano

Download or read book Under the Volcano written by Malcolm Lowry and published by Penguin Classics. This book was released on 1985 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the twentieth century's great undisputed masterpieces, Malcolm Lowry's Under the Volcano includes an introduction by Michael Schmidt in Penguin Modern Classics. It is the fiesta 'Day of the Dead' in the small Mexican town of Quauhnahuac. In the shadow of the volcano, ragged children beg coins to buy skulls made of chocolate, ugly pariah dogs roam the streets and Geoffrey Firmin - ex-consul, ex-husband, an alcoholic and a ruined man - is living out the last day of his life. Drowning himself in mescal while his former wife and half-brother look on, powerless to help him, the consul has become an enduring tragic figure. As the day wears on, it becomes apparent that Geoffrey must die. It is his only escape from a world he cannot understand. His story, the image of one man's agonised journey towards Calvary, became a prophetic book for a whole generation. Malcolm Lowry (1909-1957) was born and died in England. Between school and studying English at St Catherine's College, Cambridge he spent five months at sea as a deckhand, an experience which gave him the material for his first novel, Ultramarine (1933). After marrying in Paris, he moved to New York where he completed In Ballast to the White (1936). Under The Volcano was begun in Hollywood, coloured by a short stay in the Mexico that it describes, and eventually finished in Dollarton, British Columbia. If you enjoyed Under the Volcano, you might like F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Beautiful and the Damned, also available in Penguin Classics. 'A Faustian masterpiece' Anthony Burgess

Book The 1940 Under the Volcano

Download or read book The 1940 Under the Volcano written by Malcolm Lowry and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1940 Under the Volcano—hidden for too long in the shadows of Lowry’s 1947 masterpiece—differs from the latter in significant ways. It is a bridge between Lowry’s 1930s fiction (especially In Ballast to the White Sea) and the 1947 Under the Volcano itself. Joining the recently published Swinging the Maelstrom and In Ballast to the White Sea, The 1940 Under the Volcano takes its rightful place as part of Lowry’s exciting 1930s/early-40s trilogy. Scholars have only recently begun to pay systematic attention to convergences and divergences between this earlier work and the 1947 version. Miguel Mota and Paul Tiessen’s insightful introduction, together with extensive annotations by Chris Ackerley and David Large, reveal the depth and breadth of Lowry’s complex vision for his work. This critical edition fleshes out our sense of the enormous achievement by this twentieth-century modernist. Publié en anglais.

Book Hear Us O Lord from Heaven Thy Dwelling Place And Lunar Caustic

Download or read book Hear Us O Lord from Heaven Thy Dwelling Place And Lunar Caustic written by Malcolm Lowry and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malcolm Lowry was a rare talent whose ambition was equaled only by his problems. Struggling with alcoholism and singularly unable to manage his own life, he "believed himself to be hopelessly unlucky"; and as volume editor Nicholas Bradley points out, "the evidence suggests that he was right." This collection of short stories reveals a world of crashing prose in which Lowry draws heavily from his turbulent life to forge a tale of both heaven and hell on earth. From the rich paradise of British Columbia and the echoing beauty of Italy, to the unrelieved suffering of Mexico, Lowry's stories are layered, interwoven tales that speak to an unrealized literary potential. This new edition includes an introduction, chronology, and notes, providing key insight into one of the underappreciated literary minds of the twentieth century. An exciting and offbeat addition to Oxford's Outlooks on Canadian Literature series.

Book Strange Comfort

Download or read book Strange Comfort written by Sherrill Grace and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strange Comfort collects the best of Sherrill Grace's many published essays on the novelist and writer Malcolm Lowry, along with new pieces that incorporate her contemporary approach to his work. There are essays on Under the Volcano, on some of the stories in Hear us O Lord from heaven thy dwelling place, and on Lowry's most important themes: endless voyaging, the creative role and identity of the artist, the nightmare of history, the pressures of memory and the urgent need to protect the garden of our world. A visionary, Lowry prophetically addressed the dominant issues of our 21st century. In her new essays, Dr. Grace explores his disturbing vision of the devastating impact of perpetual war, only one of many of Lowry's preoccupations, and establishes that in many respects, Malcolm Lowry was an environmentalist avant la lettre, commenting on his vision of the natural world as an escape from the horror "of existence as sold to you." Lowry was an intensely autobiographical writer, a quality not appreciated during his lifetime. Today, critical perspectives have changed considerably, and Lowry's anxiety about writing elements of his own life into fiction invites critical reassessment. Many of these essays offer a fresh look at Lowry's attempts to apprehend and portray the writer, writing. The title, Strange Comfort, comes from a Lowry short story called "Strange Comfort Afforded by the Profession." These essays illustrate some of the ways in which Lowry found comfort in the world of art, of other writers and the landscape of his beloved Dollarton, British Columbia. Malcolm Lowry was in many ways a British writer, but his spiritual home--his creative comfort--surrounded him on the beach at Dollarton. 2009 marked the centenary of Lowry's birth and this volume of essays, old and new, celebrates Lowry's deep and enduring relevance for our times.
