Book Malay Grammar

Download or read book Malay Grammar written by R. O. Winstedt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Malay Grammar This grammar was commenced to supply the want of a text-book for the second or higher examination in the Malay language, prescribed for officials. In English there are no books in print dealing with the subject except Maxwell's Malay Manual, which is not strictly a grammar, and Shellabear's Practical Malay Grammar (printed in Singapore), which is quite elementary. This book will in no way supplant or interfere with those. Out of print are Crawfurd's Grammar, which among scholars hardly counts, and Marsden's, which so far as it goes is excellent, but it is a century behind modern research. In Dutch there are several standard works, to which I owe a great debt, especially the grammars of Gerth van Wijk, Tendeloo, Spat, and van Ophuijsen; but Dutch is an insuperable obstacle for the casual student of Malay in the Peninsula. I too must ask forgiveness, if the refraction of an unfamiliar language has led me anywhere to distort the views of authorities I have quoted or criticized. Arrangement is a difficult problem in Malay grammar. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Malay Orthography The mixture of the different kinds of type has created considerable difficulty in the setting up, especially because great varieties of founts are not available here, and the indulgence of the reader is requested for all deficiencies. Two defects are very apparent - first, in consequence of 'the large bodies of the Arabic type the vowel signs appear at too great a distance from the letters they accompany; and secondly, the type used does not admit of the insertion of a ham-zah between two joined letters except by employing with it that which appears like a substantive letter i The sincere thanks of the author are due to Mr. H. L. Noronha of the Government Printing Office for his kind assistance in seeing these pages through the press. Book A Vocabulary of the English and Malay Languages With Notes Vol 2

This book was released on 2017-07-18 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Vocabulary of the English and Malay Languages, With Notes, Vol. 2: Malay-EnglishWith regard to the mode of orthography adopted in expressing the words of the language in our characters, two considerations present them selves: the one, that of conveying, as nearly as possible, their true sound; and the other, of paying the requisite attention to the powers of the several letters made use of in the original It has been my design to avoid a pertinacious adherence to either mode. I have followed as closely the literal orthography of the original as could be done consistently with a fair expression of the sound, and where these could not be reconciled, I have given a preference to the latter consideration, because it appeared of more importance that the word should be rightly pronounced by those who cannot read the Malayan character, than that the more learned scholar should be gratified by a literal accuracy to him not absolutely necessary. Frequently indeed I have been induced to repeat the spelling with some variation in order to convey a juster idea of the pronunciation. - marsden. The above passage exactly expresses my own views in the matter of orthography. I have been anxious to give these words the prominence due to such an expression of opinion from so famous an authority.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
