Book Malawi in Crisis

Download or read book Malawi in Crisis written by Kings Mbacazwa Phiri and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malawi in crisis appears at an opportune time, setting the agenda for other scholars to follow, develop, and extend its arguments. The contributors' rigorous research and ingenious interpretation help to fill the subaltern void that was evident in existing histories of the State of Emergency, and brings balance to what has been otherwise a one-sided elitist tale. The book is readable, informative, and contributes new dimensions to one of the least-researched but most important episodes in Malawian history. It is an invaluable addition to the bookshelves of teachers, students, politicians, civil leaders, and all those seeking to understand how contemporary Malawi has evolved and the influence it has had on its neighbours.

Book Revolt of the Ministers

Download or read book Revolt of the Ministers written by Colin Baker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-23 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I certainly had very extreme views, very violent views... and I certainly did advocate... extreme methods.” So a leading Nyasaland nationalist characterised the struggle for independent Malawi, but Dr Hastings Banda, a highly respected medical doctor based for many years in London was invited back to Nyasaland to lead the movement to independent Malawi and the Malawi National Congress. Here was, or so it seemed, a loyal and progressive Government with pro-Western leadership – a final success in the story of British decolonisation. Yet within three months all but one of the cabinet ministers had resigned or were dismissed, former ministers fled the country including distinguished members of the independence movement. Even the pro-Congress Europeans feared for their lives. Colin Baker unravels this potentially disastrous episode in Malawi's history and in the story of decolonisation. He illuminates not only the immediate post-independence problems of Malawi, a newly independent African state, but charts the growth of Banda's autocracy. This detailed and revealing study reveals the problems inherent in the whole momentous story of Africa in independence and decolonisation.

Book Colonialism to Cabinet Crisis

Download or read book Colonialism to Cabinet Crisis written by Andrew C. Ross and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2009 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late Andrew C. Ross was a Scottish missionary in Malawi between 1958 and 1965 and one of the founding members of the Malawi Congress Party. Like many other Scottish missionaries of the period, he deeply opposed the Central African Federation, and was a strong supporter of the emerging Malawian nationalist movement. When, following the declaration of a State of Emergency in March 1959, many of the political leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress were detained, Andrew regularly visited those held at Kanjedza near Limbe - visits which helped to deepen both his friendship with them, and his commitment to their cause. Thus, when Orton Chirwa was released from detention later in 1959, and persuaded to become the temporary leader of the newly formed Malawi Congress Party, Andrew Ross was one of the first to join, becoming the proud holder of MCP card number six. This book covers the period 1875-1965 and includes a Foreword by Professor George Shepperson.

Book The Impact of Structural Adjustment Programs

Download or read book The Impact of Structural Adjustment Programs written by Rhino McHenga and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the developing world, especially in the Sub- Saharan Africa(SSA) experienced an acute crisis in the 1980s. The origin of this crisis can be traced back in thw 1970s and can be attributed to various factors both internal as well as external. Like most developing countries, Malawi also faced economic crisis by early 1980s. In order to address this crisis and economic imbalances that followed, the government called for economic policy reforms and the adoption of both stabilization and structural adjustment programs under the auspices of various multilateral and bilateral donors. In theory, both macroeconomic stabilization and structural adjustment programs aim at addressing fiscal crisis faced by most developing countries such as Malawi. Malawi has for the past two decades implemented various adjustment programs with an overall objective of improving its economic performance. This book attempts to analyse the policy reform objectives, their outcomes and the impact on the Malawi economic growth as well as poverty alleviation.

Book Resilience in the Malawi agri food system amid the COVID 19 crisis Evidence from a 2021 nationally representative household survey

Download or read book Resilience in the Malawi agri food system amid the COVID 19 crisis Evidence from a 2021 nationally representative household survey written by Ragasa, Catherine and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a farm-level analysis of the effects of the COVID-19 crisis, 12–15 months in, using a nationally representative rural household survey conducted in June–July 2021. We draw three major observations from the survey. First, farming activities, access to inputs and extension services, production, and sales were largely unaffected by the crisis. There were temporary challenges in accessing inputs during lockdown and mobility restrictions, and input prices and transportation costs increased; however, production and sales volume and value were largely unaffected. Second, although farming was not affected, other nonfarm livelihoods of a large proportion of farmers were negatively affected because of lower demand and fewer buyers. Eighty-two percent of rural households were engaged in various nonfarm livelihoods, and 32 percent reported negative impacts of the crisis on their nonfarm incomes. Third, direct responses from sample households indicate no negative impacts of the crisis on food access and food consumption by most rural households. Comparisons between 2018 and 2021 of various food security indicators show improvements in food access and dietary diversity. Improvements are likely attributable to better harvests overall and greater awareness of the need to eat healthy and nutritious foods to combat COVID-19 and other diseases. Results show overall resilience of rural households and the agriculture sector amid the COVID-19 crisis. Nonetheless, the survey was conducted right after harvest, and the situation needs to be monitored during the lean season.

Book Malawi The Emergency Drought Recovery Project

Download or read book Malawi The Emergency Drought Recovery Project written by P.C. Mohan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was designed and implemented (January 2003-November 2004) in response to Malawi's severe food crisis in 2002, caused by the drought and floods in 2001 and 2002, which resulted in a significant drop in maize output, the country's main staple food. The food crisis was exacerbated by a suboptimal harvest in the previous year. In addition, the Early Warning System (EWS) failed by predicting a food surplus when in fact a major food deficit was looming. Poor management of the Strategic Grain Reserve and an over-reliance on maize in the diet were additional factors which compounded the crisis. This combination of an IDA credit of $29 million equivalent and a grant of $21 million equivalent were used to finance 3 components. (i) Quick disbursing assistance to support critical imports through a positive list of import requirements linked to the drought and recovery efforts; (ii) Augmentation of the purchasing power of families whose incomes had been reduced as a result of the crisis; and (iii) Support for project implementation, technical assistance and studies. The bulk of the credit/grant ($40 million equivalent) went to support the first component.
