Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "From 1940 to 1945, forty thousand patients died in French psychiatric hospitals. The Vichy Regime's "soft extermination" let patients die of cold, starvation, or lack of care. Yet, in Saint-Alban-sur-Limagnole, a small village in central France, one psychiatric hospital attempted to resist. Hoarding food with the help of the population, the staff not only worked to keep patients alive but began to rethink the practical and theoretical bases of psychiatric care. The movement that began at Saint-Alban and came to be known as "institutional psychotherapy" would go on to have a profound influence on postwar French thought.Though the movement was varied, and the point was never to devise a dogma or a model that could be applied indiscriminately, institutional psychotherapy did attempt to offer an "ethics," or a practice of everyday life. Among its most important principles were the belief that theory and practice were inextricably linked, and that psychiatric practice was explicitly political. Camille Robcis traces the history of institutional psychotherapy from its inception to its various transformations between 1945 and 1975. Each chapter of the book is organized around a thinker who was either at Saint-Alban or who engaged with institutional psychotherapy: from François Tosquelles, Franz Fanon, Jean Oury and Félix Guattari, to Michel Foucault. They made up a fascinating constellation within which unexpected relationships between characters, contexts, and ideas--often seemingly fragmentary of tangential--emerged"--

Book Madness and Social Representations

Download or read book Madness and Social Representations written by Denise Jodelet and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A striking account of a colony for the mentally ill that forces a reconsideration of madness in society. What happens when the mentally ill are not isolated from society but are instead welcomed into it and invited to take a place in the fabric of the community? Are fear and rejection replaced by the understanding and sympathy often engendered by familiarity? Or are the barriers between the sane and the mad only strengthened? We have experienced a taste of this scenario in the U.S. in the last decade with the new emphasis on de-institutionalization, but Denise Jodelet takes us to an extraordinary community in France where the mentally ill have assumed a visible and prominent role for more than seventy years. The small French town of Ainay-le-Chteau and its environs are the site of a "family colony" for men, established in 1900. Here the patients ("lodgers") live with ordinary families ("foster parents"), hold jobs, and are free to move about the countryside. Jodelet's chronicle of daily life in the colony is made rich and vivid by extensive ethnographic material as she unravels a complex set of relationships, ultimately finding that while some of the barriers between the "other" and the larger society have been overcome, new ones have arisen in their place. This unique social experiment provides invaluable social and cultural insights, illuminating many fundamental issues in psychology, psychiatry, and sociology. Book The British Journal of Medical Psychology

Download or read book The British Journal of Medical Psychology written by and published by . This book was released on 1921 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Journal of Medical Psychology is an international journal with a traditional orientation towards psychodynamic issues. While maintaining a broad theoretical base and insisting upon sound and sensible methodology, its objective is to avoid the more simplistic approaches to psychological science. The Journal aims to bring together the medical and psychological disciplines. Collaborative studies between psychiatrists and psychologists are especially encouraged. Original theoretical and research contributions are invited from the fields of psychodynamic and interpersonal psychology, particularly as they have a bearing upon vulnerability to, adjustment to and recovery from both medical and psychological disorders. The Journal aims to promote theoretical and research developments in the fields of subjective psychological states and dispositions, interpersonal attitudes, behaviour and relationships only if they illustrate unusual forms of psychopathology or innovative forms of therapy which carry important theoretical implications.

This book was released on 2012-07-01 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Madness in Experience and History

Download or read book Madness in Experience and History written by Hannah Lyn Venable and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Madness in Experience and History brings together experience and history to show their impact on madness or mental illness. Drawing on the writings of two twentieth-century French philosophers, Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Michel Foucault, the author pairs a phenomenological approach with an archaeological approach to present a new perspective on mental illness as an experience that arises out of common behavioral patterns and shared historical structures. Many today feel frustrated with the medical model because of its deficiencies in explaining mental illness. In response, the author argues that we must integrate human experiences of mental disorders with the history of mental disorders to have a full account of mental health and to make possible a more holistic care. Scholars in the humanities and mental health practitioners will appreciate how such an analysis not only offers a greater understanding of mental health, but also a fresh take on discovering value in diverse human experiences.
