Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laying the foundation for an understanding of US-Israeli relations, this lively and accessible book provides critical background on the origins and development of the 'special' relations between Israel and the United States. Questioning the usual neo-realist approach to understanding this relationship, David Tal instead suggests that the relations between the two nations were constructed on idealism, political culture, and strategic ties. Based on a diverse range of primary sources collected in archives in both Israel and the United States, The Making of an Alliance discusses the development of relations built through constant contact between people and ideas, showing how presidents and Prime Ministers, state officials, and ordinary people from both countries, impacted one another. It was this constancy of religion, values, and history, serving the bedrock of the relations between the two countries and peoples, over which the ephemeral was negotiated.

Download or read book Disruption written by Michael De Groot and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2024-03-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Disruption, Michael De Groot argues that the global economic upheaval of the 1970s was decisive in ending the Cold War. Both the West and the Soviet bloc struggled with the slowdown of economic growth; chaos in the international monetary system; inflation; shocks in the commodities markets; and the emergence of offshore financial markets. The superpowers had previously disseminated resources to their allies to enhance their own national security, but the disappearance of postwar conditions during the 1970s forced Washington and Moscow to choose between promoting their own economic interests and supporting their partners in Europe and Asia. De Groot shows that new unexpected macroeconomic imbalances in global capitalism sustained the West during the following decade. Rather than a creditor nation and net exporter, as it had been during the postwar period, the United States became a net importer of capital and goods during the 1980s that helped fund public spending, stimulated economic activity, and lubricated the private sector. The United States could now live beyond its means and continue waging the Cold War, and its allies benefited from access to the booming US market and the strengthened US military umbrella. As Disruption demonstrates, a new symbiotic economic architecture powered the West, but the Eastern European regimes increasingly became a burden to the Soviet Union. They were drowning in debt, and the Kremlin no longer had the resources to rescue them.

  • Author :
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2024-10-20
  • ISBN : 0198940173
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Global Rights written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-20 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the place of human rights law within global governance? How can we safeguard human rights in various sites of global governance? What is the role of the state, non-state actors, and global governance institutions in all this? Global Rights?: Human Rights in Complex Governance interrogates how human rights and global governance interact with various sub-fields of international and transnational regulation to answer these foundational questions. The volume offers a detailed exploration of the role of human rights in global governance contexts, such as the sovereign debt regime, global value chains, development assistance, international food governance, and the laws of war. Through an in-depth study of several global governance regimes based on diverse theoretical and methodological approaches, this volume challenges the mainstream discourse on the evolution of human rights law and its limits. As a result, issue areas that are rarely in conversation with each other--such as the World Bank's practices and the law on the use of force--are examined through a common analytical framework that is both rich and flexible enough to shed new light on individual areas of concern and simultaneously reflect on cross-cutting themes. Bringing human rights experts together with leading scholars in the law of international organizations, public finance, corporations, and use of force, Global Rights? thus serves as a contemporary reflection and set of arguments on how to study and productively think about human rights in complex governance settings.

Book From Buildings and Loans to Bail Outs

Download or read book From Buildings and Loans to Bail Outs written by David L. Mason and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-05 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most Americans, the savings and loan industry is defined by the fraud, ineptitude and failures of the 1980s. However, these events overshadow a long history in which thrifts played a key role in helping thousands of households buy homes. First appearing in the 1830s savings and loans, then known as building and loans, encourage their working-class members to adhere to the principles of thrift and mutual co-operation as a way to achieve the 'American Dream' of home ownership. This book traces the development of this industry from its origins as a movement of a loosely affiliated collection of institutions into a major element of America's financial markets. It also analyses how diverse groups of Americans, including women, ethnic Americans and African Americans, used thrifts to improve their lives and elevate their positions in society. Finally the overall historical perspective sheds new light on the events of the 1980s and analyses the efforts to rehabilitate the industry in the 1990s.
