Book excerpt: This study is a mixed-method design focusing on ten White and ten non-White elementary principals working in urban areas. The qualitative methodology uses interviews and observations to examine how principals conceptualize the student achievement gaps and through what practices do they attempt to remedy the condition. The quantitative data resulted from the Quick Discrimination Index and relied on descriptive statistics. The primary audience for this study includes PK-12 public school administrators, particularly those in urban high-diversity, high-achieving schools. The investigation (1) examined cultural differences between White and non-White administrators and their student constituency in terms of ethnicity and language use, (2) socioeconomic status, as well as (3) the present climate of academic accountability for all student groups. It also emphasized (4) the importance of understanding the interaction of the dimensions of school leadership and the academic outcomes of all students. Emerging themes were established by a 70% repetition response rate. Collective themes included: district diversity training, community involvement, literacy, curriculum alignment, team building, role of data and setting high student expectations. White administrators focused on the role of data, best practices, and curriculum alignment. Non-White administrators centered on relationship building, community involvement and literacy.

Book excerpt: This report tells the stories of nine urban elementary schools that served children of color in poor communities and achieved impressive academic results. All of the schools used federal Title I dollars to create Title I schoolwide programs. In these schools, many important change efforts were enhanced through Title I education resources. Though Title I supported the change efforts, however, it was not the catalyst for change. The true catalyst was the strong desire of educators to ensure academic success for all students. Teams of researchers visited the schools to interview campus and district administrators, teachers, parents, and other school personnel. They observed classrooms, hallways, playgrounds, and meetings. They also reviewed school documents and achievement data. Results indicated that the schools were different in important ways. The differences suggest that many urban elementary schools serving poor communities can achieve high levels of student achievement, with successes being achieved through different means. There were also important similarities. The report presents findings and recommendations based on the findings. (SM).

Book excerpt: Current research illustrates that some schools, often referred to as high-performing, high-poverty schools, have led their low-income populations to high levels of achievement (Ambrose, 2008). Hypothesizing that some schools were doing quite well with students from low-income families, the director for the Center for Urban Studies at Harvard University, Ronald Edmonds and other researchers looked at achievement data from schools in major cities around the country where student populations were from high-poverty areas. During the 1980s a list was developed that identified common characteristics that were present in effective schools. These traits became known as the Correlates of Effective Schools. These correlates appeared repeatedly in high-performing schools, despite the schools' socioeconomic levels (Lezotte, 1991). Research regarding high-poverty, high-performing elementary schools specifically located in South Carolina is limited. The purpose of this research was to learn how principals of high-poverty, high-performing elementary schools in South Carolina promote high levels of student achievement.

The central research question was: (1) How do teachers and administrators in a high-poverty, urban school describe the strategies they use to achieve academic success? The sub-questions were: (1) What are the aspects of the instructional program that assure student success for all students? (2) What changes occurred in the school to achieve its current status? (3) How have the changes been implemented to assure student success? (4) What resources have been instrumental to achieve student success in the school? Interviews were conducted with 16 individuals and included the previous principal, the current principal, and the assistant principal, as well as teachers and specialists. Five themes emerged from the analysis of the transcripts. The themes were Instructional Practices; Changes; Leadership Practices; Teachers, Parents, and Community Involvement; and Professional Development.
