Book Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management

Download or read book Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management written by Eugenio Martinez-Falero and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 627 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest management has evolved from a mercantilist view to a multi-functional one that integrates economic, social, and ecological aspects. However, the issue of sustainability is not yet resolved. Quantitative Techniques in Participatory Forest Management brings together global research in three areas of application: inventory of the forest variables that determine the main environmental indices, description and design of new environmental indices, and the application of sustainability indices for regional implementations. The book outlines a public participatory process to assess sustainability in forest management. It explores a new approach that links human and natural systems, reconsiders our interdependence with the diversity of life, and recognizes our role in a unique and complex system. The book also identifies quantitative indices that provide a vast amount of information on soil, landscape, and ecological functioning. It highlights the importance of these indices for public information programs on participatory processes and provides an operating procedure to identify the degree of convergence in the utility of multiple evaluators. The last chapter describes a downloadable computer application that integrates the techniques explained in the book. Users accessing the application are offered a map representing their preferred forest management plan in the study zone. They are also given a map with the results of their corresponding community of evaluators, including the numerical and qualitative data for both. The system stores a record of the visit, including the visitor's profile and responses, to progress towards the joint forest management plan. The quantitative techniques highlighted in this book create the basis for the development of scientific methodologies of participatory sustainable forest management. It details the methodology for the design of a forest management plan that best suits a specific preference system.

Book Policy and Socio Economics of Participatory Forest Management in Bangladesh

Download or read book Policy and Socio Economics of Participatory Forest Management in Bangladesh written by Nur Muhammed and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 5. Full book description (up to 200 words). In a world of rapidly growing population and finite resources, competition becomes obviously severe. Forest - a renewable resource is now under pressure because of its growing demand for the ever increasing human needs. Poor financing, bureaucracy, political instability, inappropriate policy instruments, missing participation, lack of fund and technical expertise and chain corruption are the identified causes of policy and management failure in forestry of developing countries. With regards to policy and sustainability measures so far achieved internationally, Bangladesh and other developing countries are still not in a position to accept and adopt those measures. Keeping all these issues in consideration a research effort has been made on participatory forestry in Bangladesh focusing on five specific aspects viz. i. review and analysis of Bangladesh forest policies, ii. international forestry development and its linkage with Bangladesh forestry paradigms, iii. historical perspectives of participatory forestry, iv. investment analysis of participatory forestry with a comparison to traditional forest plantation and v. role of participatory forest management in socio - economic development and poverty alleviation. In Bangladesh participatory forestry is becoming financially more attractive than traditional production forestry creating avenues for self reliance, women empowerment, social acceptance and decision making abilities of the grass root level people. We believe that that participatory forestry may serve as an important linkage between poor people, trees and forest agency to halt land encroachment and deforestation. As a pure applied research on forestry, this book can be a useful reference for further research on relevant fields providing clue for policy makers and professionals. 6. Brief author biography (up to 100 words). (included in the back cover) Dr. Nur Muhammed (1971) is a professional Bangladeshi forester with an experience of over thirteen years. Book The Decentralization of Forest Governance

Download or read book The Decentralization of Forest Governance written by Moira Moeliono and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-31 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This book provides an excellent overview of more than a decade of transformation in a forest landscape where the interests of local people, extractive industries and globally important biodiversity are in conflict. The studies assembled here teach us that plans and strategies are fine but, in the real world of the forest frontier, conservation must be based upon negotiation, social learning and an ability to muddle through.' Jeffrey Sayer, senior scientific adviser, Forest Conservation Programme IUCN - International Union for of Nature The devolution of control over the world's forests from national or state and provincial level governments to local control is an ongoing global trend that deeply affects all aspects of forest management, conservation of biodiversity, control over resources, wealth distribution and livelihoods. This powerful new book from leading experts provides an in-depth account of how trends towards increased local governance are shifting control over natural resource management from the state to local societies, and the implications of this control for social justice and the environment. The book is based on ten years of work by a team of researchers in Malinau, Indonesian Borneo, one of the world's richest forest areas. The first part of the book sets the larger context of decentralization's impact on power struggles between the state and society. The authors then cover in detail how the devolution process has occurred in Malinau, the policy context, struggles and conflicts and how Malinau has organized itself. The third part of the book looks at the broader issues of property relations, conflict, local governance and political participation associated with decentralization in Malinau. Importantly, it draws out the salient points for other international contexts including the important determination that 'local political alliances', especially among ethnic minorities, are taking on greater prominence and creating new opportunities to influence forest policy in the world's richest forests from the ground up. This is top-level research for academics and professionals working on forestry, natural resource management, policy and resource economics worldwide. Published with CIFOR

Book Adaptive Collaborative Management in Forest Landscapes

Download or read book Adaptive Collaborative Management in Forest Landscapes written by Carol J Pierce Colfer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the value of Adaptive Collaborative Management for facilitating learning and collaboration with local communities and beyond, utilising detailed studies of forest landscapes and communities. Many forest management proposals are based on top-down strategies, such as the Million Tree Initiatives, Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) and REDD+, often neglecting local communities. In the context of the climate crisis, it is imperative that local peoples and communities are an integral part of all decisions relating to resource management. Rather than being seen as beneficiaries or people to be safeguarded, they should be seen as full partners, and Adaptive Collaborative Management is an approach which priorities the rights and roles of communities alongside the need to address the environmental crisis. The volume presents detailed case studies and real life examples from across the globe, promoting and prioritizing the voices of women and scholars and practitioners from the Global South who are often under-represented. Providing concrete examples of ways that a bottom-up approach can function to enhance development sustainably, via its practitioners and far beyond the locale in which they initially worked, this volume demonstrates the lasting utility of approaches like Adaptive Collaborative Management that emphasize local control, inclusiveness and local creativity in management. This book will be of great interest to students, scholars and practitioners working in the fields of conservation, forest management, community development and natural resource management and development studies more broadly.
