Book Making Good on Private Duty Practical Hints to Graduate Nurses

Download or read book Making Good on Private Duty Practical Hints to Graduate Nurses written by Harriet Camp Lounsbery and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harriet Camp Lounsbery is the author of a famous nursing education guide Making Good on Private Duty. While techniques are continually evolving, methods are improving, and education in institutions is becoming more comprehensive, the traditional challenges in personal work have always persisted. It all has to be confronted, and the younger nursing siblings still need to be guided, directed, and assisted. This book was intended for these young nurses on private duty. A Treasury tip for Edwardian nurses is included in the narrative: - Unless you know your male patient well, don't try to read it aloud at stock market rates from a newspaper, as it is practically difficult for a woman to read it such a man would comprehend it. The advice includes never going to the sick room with a long face; it is enough for the ill to be unwell; you are there to aid and console them, not to add to their concern.

Book excerpt: "[...]honor of the nurse must come into play; let her forget it if possible, as woe will betide the poor girl if in her next place she unwittingly lets out any of the secrets she has heard in these long talks. Try then to steer clear of the neighbors. If your patient be a cultivated person, and you yourself know anything about books, you have a never-failing topic. All the latest books, the famous books, the most entertaining books, and if you can read aloud and the patient likes to hear you, read to her, and it will do both good-only be sure not to tire her by reading too much at one time. Talk of interesting places you have visited and she will do the same, of pictures you have seen, and last, but not least, you can talk about clothes. Generally the first serious piece of business a convalescent concerns herself about is the purchase and making of some new clothes. She wants something new and fresh, and if you can give her any new ideas on the subject or tell her of any pretty materials you have seen in the shop windows, you[...]".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alzheimer's disease is a primary neurodegenerative disease whose incidence and prevalence is rapidly approaching epidemic proportions. A major reason for this is that man is living longer than he has ever lived before and the likelihood of contracting the disease is significantly greater within the elderly portion of the population. The problem becomes even more acute in the light of recent estimates which predict that the number of people living beyond the age of 65 is expected to continue to increase. The impact of these statistics on the family and the health care industry in terms of time, effort and cost are staggering. A recent report issued by the Michigan Task Force on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Conditions (1987) effectively underscores this last point. "Each person with a dementing disease requires an average of seven years of care, either at home or in a residential care facility. Care provided at home is estimated to cost about $12,000 annually, for a total of $84,000 per person. This is a conservative figure, however, because many persons with dementia spend their last few years in a nursing home at an average 'cost of $22,000 per year, and some spend from 10 to 15 years in a nursing home, for a total cost of $220,000 to $330,000.
