Book Making Better Use of Bandwidth Data Compression and Network Management Technologies

Download or read book Making Better Use of Bandwidth Data Compression and Network Management Technologies written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations in Afghanistan and Iraq demonstrated the Army's increasing reliance on communications. Tactical forces on the move and widely dispersed were stressed to communicate voice and data and were unable to exchange database transfers, real-time video, and imagery. These applications take a lot of bandwidth, an especially challenging problem for forces on the move that cannot use high-gain antennas. Furthermore, future demands seem likely to increase. Researchers from RAND Arroyo Center have been seeking ways in which the Army might use bandwidth better, specifically how new compression technologies might help improve information throughput. The objective of compression is to reduce the amount of data required to store or transmit digital information.

Book High Performance Datacenter Networks

Download or read book High Performance Datacenter Networks written by Dennis Abts and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Datacenter networks provide the communication substrate for large parallel computer systems that form the ecosystem for high performance computing (HPC) systems and modern Internet applications. The design of new datacenter networks is motivated by an array of applications ranging from communication intensive climatology, complex material simulations and molecular dynamics to such Internet applications as Web search, language translation, collaborative Internet applications, streaming video and voice-over-IP. For both Supercomputing and Cloud Computing the network enables distributed applications to communicate and interoperate in an orchestrated and efficient way. This book describes the design and engineering tradeoffs of datacenter networks. It describes interconnection networks from topology and network architecture to routing algorithms, and presents opportunities for taking advantage of the emerging technology trends that are influencing router microarchitecture. With the emergence of "many-core" processor chips, it is evident that we will also need "many-port" routing chips to provide a bandwidth-rich network to avoid the performance limiting effects of Amdahl's Law. We provide an overview of conventional topologies and their routing algorithms and show how technology, signaling rates and cost-effective optics are motivating new network topologies that scale up to millions of hosts. The book also provides detailed case studies of two high performance parallel computer systems and their networks. Table of Contents: Introduction / Background / Topology Basics / High-Radix Topologies / Routing / Scalable Switch Microarchitecture / System Packaging / Case Studies / Closing Remarks

Download or read book Error Coding for Engineers written by A. Houghton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2001-09-30 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Error Coding for Engineers provides a useful tool for practicing engineers, students, and researchers, focusing on the applied rather than the theoretical. It describes the processes involved in coding messages in such a way that, if errors occur during transmission or storage, they are detected and, if necessary, corrected. Very little knowledge beyond a basic understanding of binary manipulation and Boolean algebra is assumed, making the subject accessible to a broad readership including non-specialists. The approach is tutorial: numerous examples, illustrations, and tables are included, along with over 30 pages of hands-on exercises and solutions. Error coding is essential in many modern engineering applications. Engineers involved in communications design, DSP-based applications, IC design, protocol design, storage solutions, and memory product design are among those who will find the book to be a valuable reference. Error Coding for Engineers is also suitable as a text for basic and advanced university courses in communications and engineering.
