Book Making a High School Program Classic Reprint

Download or read book Making a High School Program Classic Reprint written by Myron W. Richardson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making a High School Program The public is devoting more and more of its treasure to the school, particularly to the high school. The high school principal has a responsibility for the economy and efficiency of his school organization. Care and economy mean more funds for education. We might raise salaries on what is now wasted. In industry, with rising labor costs has come greater attention to individual economies. The school cannot escape the tendency. Does the high school principal know whether or not he is getting full efficiency from his organization? Is the work evenly divided? Are teachers overworked or underworked? Are pupil divisions evenly constructed? Are program difficulties solved? The high school principal needs in his equipment the engineers capacity. He is an educational engineer. The high school program, indeed, is an engineering problem. No system of making a high school program on the trial-and-error method is defensible. From mathematical reasons it must be faulty. No purely mechanical method of making a program is adequate, for the result is wrong and the pupils and teachers are the necessary victims. A high school program must be scientifically constructed if it is to be accepted as adequate to the situation presented. Poor high school programs are responsible today for great waste of money in the employment of unnecessary teachers, in the uneven distribution of work, in preventing pupils' range of choice of subjects, and in unnecessary worry and confusion throughout the organization. The professionally trained high school principal can easily find a way out of the program difficulties. The struggle against this universal problem has developed some program geniuses, and their discoveries are not esoteric but open and free to those who wish to adopt their ideas. Book The Commercial Program of Studies for High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Commercial Program of Studies for High Schools Classic Reprint written by Arnon W. Welch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commercial Program of Studies for High Schools Throughout the entire civilized world records and correspondence are coexistent with commercial transactions and are used in various ways other than commercial. In fact, the time has arrived when instruction in keeping simple accounts, the general principles of business and the use of the typewriter should be a part of the education of every boy and girl, and comparatively few there are who enter commercial life who, at some point in their career, will not find shorthand useful in their progress, if not, indeed, all their lives. The use of these subjects is universal; instruction in them should be equally universal. Place of Subjects in Curriculum Four Year - High School General Subjects The place of general subjects in the commercial program of studies will be determined by their place in other programs of the school. General Commercial Subjects In some schools commercial geography is given in the second year and in others in the first year. It is the writer's opinion that this subject should be broken up into two courses, giving elementary economic geography in the first year and transportation and markets in the second year. A large amount of laboratory work should be given in these courses. Commercial arithmetic is usually given in the first or second year. It is well also to give some advance commercial arithmetic and review in the senior year. Commercial law may be given profitably either in the junior or senior year, likewise business organization and administration, and credits and collections. However, it is preferable to have commercial law precede and credits and collections. Technical Commercial Subjects Typewriting may be offered as early as the seventh year, and at least one year of it should be required of all commercial students. If its is begun in the seventh year, more than one year of typewriting should be required. In the secretarial course typewriting should be taken each year that shorthand is studied. The year in which shorthand is introduced will depend upon the purposes to be served and local conditions. In some schools it is begun in the ninth year, in other tenth, and in still others in the eleventh year. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The particular field covered is the high school period, and the prob lems are approached purposely from the distinctive high school point of view. Book The High School s Cure of Souls Classic Reprint

Download or read book The High School s Cure of Souls Classic Reprint written by Edward Octavius Sisson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School's Cure of Souls Nor can the over-intellectualism of the university graduate be a surprize to any one who realizes the vast transformation from the older type of American college, with its deep ethical and religious character, to the university of today with its intense specialized teaching and study on the one hand, and its absorbing athletic and social life on the other - a trans formation pictured with power and fidelity by Mr. Clarence F. Birdseye in his really great book, Individual training in our colleges. What the American high school needs is just what English Rugby needed and what the immortal Arnold gave it thru his teaching and example, and as Hughes says, above all thru his unwearied zeal in creating moral thoughtfulness in every boy with whom he came into personal contact.1 Woe unto the land if its future leaders lack moral thoughtfulness in its fullest sense: both the righteous intent and the practical wis dom; only by these two elements combined in our statesmen and citizens can the republic be saved and the nation fulfil its destiny. Book The American High School Classic Reprint

Download or read book The American High School Classic Reprint written by John Franklin Brown and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American High School The problems of the American high school are specific. They differ much from those of the elementary school below and those of the college, university, or technical school above. The experience of the last half century has revealed them; it has also developed a considerable body of knowledge concerning them, which every high-school teacher should possess before entering upon his work. This knowledge will not solve all his individual problems, but it should at least make him aware of their existence and suggest the solution which he must himself work out. This volume is an attempt to present such information about the high school. It is not an exhaustive treatment of the subject, but merely an introduction to it. Unfortunately we still continue the general practice of sending into the high schools from the colleges and universities young men and women whose best preparation for their work consists in academic scholarship ranging from poor to excellent, and an enthusiastic desire to teach the subjects in which they have become most interested during the college course. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The School Chemistry: A New Text-Book for High Schools and Academies The chief significance of the foregoing is that, as far as possible, each pupil is to perform the experiments for himself, make his own observations, and draw his own conclusions. This is important, whether some of the experiments have been performed by the instructor before the class or not. In every case there must be care that the conclusions arrived at are founded upon actual facts. See that each pupil has a small note-book, and that he always has it at hand when he is making his experiments. See that the details of all experiments made by him are recorded by him in this book at the time of the experiment, not subsequently. In addition to the description of the Operation, the record should contain an account of all observed phenomena, and the conclusions drawn from them. The ability to observe accurately and completely, and the ability to draw proper conclusions from observed facts, are the two greatest benefits to be derived from the study of general chemistry. Make frequent and careful examinations of the pupil's notes, seeking to lead him to accurate observation, to intelligent discrimination between essential and merely incidental conditions and results of an experiment, to correctness of conclusions, and to precision and concise ness of statement. Do not let your pupils get the idea that they, chemists; do not think that you ought to make chemists' of them. After this course has been completed, a course in some good school of applied science will be needed for the pupil who desires to become a chemist.' The author would be glad to receive suggestions from teachers using this book, or to answer any inquiries they may make. He may be addressed at Cleveland, Ohio. He gratefully acknowledges the aid given him by many. Especial mention is due to Professor Albert W. Smith of the Case School of Applied Science; his work shows on almost every page.
