Book excerpt: A pair of frenemies navigates the shallow depths of a small-town dating scene only to find the romance they need is right in front of them. Former ballerina Marlo Jonas has all the right moves--except when it comes to men. Her latest boyfriend? A cheater. In the wake of her breakup, her father has a novel idea for her: try dating men for who they are and not how they look. This makes it easy to ignore her hot nemesis, Seattle Times reporter Ben Wexler-Lowrey. Ben's take on romance means spending time with interesting women whose personalities might sparkle more than their looks dazzle. But Ben's mother thinks he can fare better. He's never tried online dating before, but what could be the harm in putting himself out there? As Marlo and Ben both suffer through a series of hilariously awkward dates, they're left feeling empty. Marlo needs someone empathetic enough to soothe her past hurt. Ben needs someone who truly sees him for the man he is. These enemies love to loathe one another; could that mean Marlo and Ben are foes in love?

Book excerpt: A stunning and inspiring guide to selecting, preparing, and enjoying sustainable seafood, with 75 recipes, from a world-class spearfisherwoman. Growing up in Montreal, Valentine Thomas was not innately drawn to the water; in fact, it scared her. But later, dissatisfied with her work in corporate law and finance, she was introduced to a sport called spearfishing while on holiday in Ibiza. The ocean—which she had once feared—became her greatest passion, and she made fishing and diving her life’s work. In Good Catch, Valentine shares her love for the bounty of waters around the world, as well as her enthusiasm and expertise for cooking fish and seafood in a sustainable way. The recipes, inspired by Valentine’s favorite fishing destinations, are organized by region, and include both classic and creative preparations, such as Grilled Clams with Butter, Garlic, and Parsley, a Seafood Boil, Snapper Panzanella with Grapefruit, and Fish Head Nachos. Valentine also teaches readers the surprisingly simple skills they’ll need to build a responsible repertoire of seafood recipes, provides tips for making the most eco-friendly choices, and discusses the best ways to prepare each and every type of fish, from raw dishes like ceviche to a baked whole fish. Illustrated by gorgeous photography of both the dishes and scenes from Valentine’s dramatic dives, Good Catch is more than just a fish cookbook—it’s an adventure into the world of delicious and sustainable seafood. Whether you are new to cooking fish or a seasoned pescatarian in search of more seafood cookbooks, Good Catch is sure to please!

Book excerpt: The Downward Spiral: Beginnings and Endings tells a story about numerous characters and their lives and how they cope with the ups and downs of the world they live in. One scene in particular is pivotal and brings them together on a snowy day in Schaumburg Illinois. Life will change forever for some in this tale. Music plays a large part along with the day to day life that people live and their jobs they report to and how they communicate with others and how they deal with loss. It focuses on a mother and a husband and then a son. Then it becomes just a mother and son. They go through life with problems like everyone and you see how they deal with them and how they get through the difficult times. The arguments they have and the love that they find and lose. You see how a boy grows up into a teenager and see his likes and dislikes and what he seems to want in life. A mother who deals with things not always going her way and just adjusting to it and hoping things turn out for the best. We learn about other characters who have smaller roles in this tale but they are as well very important and you fell for them and what they have in relationships and their careers and their families. They are out doing the most normal tasks and talking with friends and communicating with their pets. They are dealing with the snow and the winter in the Midwest. A world can be cruel and it can tear things apart if you’re not careful. They have no idea what is to come but they are real people with problems and issues and some are in love and some are in the process of fixing their mistakes and they will be in the same place on a cool snowy February Saturday. Beginnings and Endings, this is true in many senses as this novel goes on. Lives and relationships and love and events they all are part of this cycle. Some of these things end and some of these begin. This world is filled with sadness and darkness and then at the same time it is filled with some happiness and the characters are set to these feelings and that day. A boy and his mother wait outside and wonder what just happened and you have no real answer for him. What do you say? That wasn’t what you expected to see and you didn’t expect to hear screams. Her husband, his father picks them up and they drive off with a new sense of life and a feeling of sadness has taken over them.
