Book excerpt: “Cho’s work . . . exudes a dramatic sense of timelessness—as though it were built centuries ago.” —Dwell Widely considered Korea’s most important architect, Byoung Cho has created iconic buildings, art and cultural centers, schools, health facilities, and residences in Korea, Malaysia, Japan, and the United States. He is the recipient of Korea’s major architectural awards and has been a visiting lecturer at Harvard and Columbia universities. Influenced by Korea’s rich aesthetic tradition, Cho uses understated forms to design buildings that offer powerful yet subtle experiences for their inhabitants. This exquisitely designed book—the first on Byoung Cho in English—features the architect’s most acclaimed projects, including Twin Tree Towers (2010), his iconic buildings located adjacent to the royal Gyeongbok Palace in Seoul, which embody Cho’s fascination with the relationship between ancient history and modernity.

Book The Intimacy of Making

Download or read book The Intimacy of Making written by Eugénie Shinkle and published by Lars Muller Publishers. This book was released on 2021-01-13 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 'The Intimacy of Making' the Swiss photographer Hélène Binet takes us on a visual journey through a world of stone, walls and gardens that define and celebrate the Korean art of making. In pure and calm black-and-white photographs we discover traditional Korean architecture through a Western lens. The purity of the motifs sharpens one?s eye for the often-overlooked beauty and harmony in our own environment and history, as well as for the care of craft and composition. This book is a reminder against our often fleeting and careless perceptions.0In her photographs, which were taken over the course of the last three years, Binet looks at three typologies of traditional architecture in Korea: the Confucian school and sacred place Byeongsan Sewon; garden and tea house Soswaewon; and the Jongmyo Shrine. Her camera combines both the nature and the built structures and reveals the soul of the three sites. 0The photographic essays are accompanied by two texts: Korean architect, Byoung Cho, offers insight into the cultural and architectural history, while art and design critic and teacher, Eugenie Shinkle, focuses on the ?making.?

Book Wood Houses

  • Author : Ruth Slavid

  • Release : 2006-10
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 212 pages

Download or read book Wood Houses written by Ruth Slavid and published by Abbeville Publishing Group. This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A superbly illustrated survey profiling noteworthy new homes from around the world, all constructed from the architect's latest cutting-edge material-wood. Contemporary architects have long overlooked the great versatility of wood as a building material. Now, however, they have begun to adopt wood as the natural solution to a variety of design problems, and as a result, this environmentally sustainable material is becoming increasingly significant in today's domestic architecture. Wood Houses, by noted architecture journalist Ruth Slavid, displays the entire breadth of this important architectural movement by covering forty-six recently built homes. The featured houses range from Fernau and Hartman Architects' Mann Residence in Sonoma County, a timber-frame house with a strikingly decentralized plan, to 24H Architecture's Arjang House in , Värmland Sweden, a reindeer fur-lined, cedar-shingled lakeside retreat. Each house's profile is illustrated with not only the architect's own plans and elevations but also numerous full-color interior and exterior photographs that highlight the intrinsic beauty of wood. Slavid explores the background of the present wood-house renaissance in an introduction that covers topics as wide-ranging as timber-frame construction, the use of wood in an urban setting, and fire prevention. She goes on to illuminate significant trends in the field of wooden home design, such as timber's popularity as a construction material for vacation homes and the evolution of deliberately austere aesthetics from wood's innate qualities. Other topics include the liberation of wood from its familiar associations to serve as the basis of modern design and the current status of wood houses as part of a larger urban or suburban development. A helpful appendix features project credits and a glossary. This beautiful volume will serve as both a reference and an inspiration for anyone who designs, builds, or simply lives in wood houses.

Book Vo Trong Nghia Building Nature

Download or read book Vo Trong Nghia Building Nature written by Vo Trong Nghia and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A career-spanning monograph in two volumes presenting the work of one of Asia’s most progressive and innovative architects Vo Trong Nghia. The work of Vo Trong Nghia is a call for architecture to transform itself from a source of pollution to a reason for hope. The World Green Building Council estimates that thirty-nine percent of energy-related carbon emissions can be attributed to buildings. An awareness of architecture’s responsibilities has permeated the profession and new ideas and solutions are coming from places where these issues are most acute. Following a long recovery from decades of war, Vietnam has emerged as one of the most exciting centers of design in Asia—led largely by the work of architect Vo Trong Nghia, whose work has gained an international following. The buildings of Vo Trong Nghia Architects, established in Ho Chi Minh City in 2006, make clear reference to the past, and to Vo’s own adherence to the Five Precepts of Buddhist teaching. The architect’s two main themes—green architecture and bamboo as a building material—form the basis of this two-volume celebration of his work. From the Wind and Water Bar, his first foray into bamboo as a building material, to resort complexes, art installations, and his game-changing series of residences, House for Trees, Vo Trong Nighia: Building Nature proves that green architecture creates local relevance, beauty, and elegance in its own right.

Download or read book 3D Bioprinting written by Dong-Woo Cho and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text advances fundamental knowledge in modeling in vitro tissues/organs as an alternative to 2D cell culture and animal testing. Prior to engineering in vitro tissues/organs,the descriptions of prerequisites (from pre-processing to post-processing) in modeling in vitro tissues/organs are discussed. The most prevalent technologies that have been widely used for establishing the in vitro tissue/organ models are also described, including transwell, cell spheroids/sheets, organoids, and microfluidic-based chips. In particular, the authors focus on 3D bioprinting in vitro tissue/organ models using tissue-specific bioinks. Several representative bioprinting methods and conventional bioinks are introduced. As a bioink source, decellularized extracellular matrix (dECM) are importantly covered, including decellularization methods, evaluation methods for demonstrating successful decellularization, and material safety. Taken together, the authors delineate various application examples of 3D bioprinted in vitro tissue/organ models especially using dECM bioinks.

Book Convergent Flux

  • ISBN : 3034611293

Download or read book Convergent Flux written by Jinhee Park and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Convergent Flux illustrates the contemporary architectural and urban planning developments in South Korea in the context of the country's considerable urban density. In recent years South Korea, which long stood in the shadow of the superpowers Japan and China, has surged in economic terms. That said, industrialization and the population explosion connected with it have created enormous challenges for the country at the interface between globalization and cultural identity. Some 10.5 million inhabitants live in the center of the capital Seoul, while the metropolitan area includes around 25 million residents making it the second largest conurbation in the world after Tokyo. The result is high urban density, which spells an enormous demand for the more efficient use of space and encourages verticalization in architecture. The publication outlines the current developments in South Korean architecture, urban development and landscape architecture by examining 32 projects in detail. An in-depth view of contemporary South Korean architecture is given by five essays that address topics such as the fusion of tradition and the modern, the re-defining of so-called "social spaces" and the country's special topographical situation. The authors are both architects, trained at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
