Book excerpt: We will probably never know why William Mercer duelled with the honorable Andrew Ramsay in Ghazipur in 1801. The fact that he did, and lost his life changed the lives of all around him. One of those was his five year old son, William Drummond Mercer. Major Mercer is the story of how it came to be that a manfrom a prominent Scottish family came to Port Phillip in the first formative years of the colony and played a key role in it's establishment and subsequent separation from New South Wales.Beyond this it's the story of a man who travelled successfully around the world and built a legacy for his own family.
Download or read book The Whisper of the River written by Ferrol Sams and published by Penguin. This book was released on 1986-02-04 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bittersweet and very funny story of a young man’s journey to adulthood that the Nashville Banner called "Americana at its best." Young for his class and small for his age, Porter Osborne, Jr., leaves his rural Georgia home in 1938 to meet the world at Willingham University, armed with the knowledge that he has been "Raised Right" in the best Baptist tradition. What happens over the next four years will challenge the things he holds infallible: his faith, his heritage, and his parents’ omniscience. As we follow Porter’s college career, full of outrageous pranks and ribald humor, we sense a quiet, constant flow toward maturity. Peppered with memorable characters and resonant with details of place and time, The Whisper of the River is filled with the richness of spirit that makes great fiction. "Wry, incisive, delicately structured, emotionally complex, and hilarious." -- Atlanta Magazine

Download or read book Skylark written by Philip Furia and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2004-12-09 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skylark is the story of the tormented but glorious life and career of Johnny Mercer, and the first biography of this enormously popular and influential lyricist. Raised in Savannah, Mercer brought a quintessentially southern style to both his life in New York and to his lyrics, which often evoked the landscapes and mood of his youth ("Moon River", "In the Cool, Cool, Cool of the Evening"). Mercer also absorbed the music of southern blacks--the lullabies his nurse sang to him as a baby and the spirituals that poured out of Savannah's churches-and that cool smooth lyrical style informed some of his greatest songs, such as "That Old Black Magic". Part of a golden guild whose members included Cole Porter and Irving Berlin, Mercer took Hollywood by storm in the midst of the Great Depression. Putting words to some of the most famous tunes of the time, he wrote one hit after another, from "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby" to "Jeepers Creepers" and "Hooray for Hollywood." But it was also in Hollywood that Mercer's dark underside emerged. Sober, he was a kind, generous and at times even noble southern gentleman; when he drank, Mercer tore into friends and strangers alike with vicious abuse. Mercer's wife Ginger, whom he'd bested Bing Crosby to win, suffered the cruelest attacks; Mercer would even improvise cutting lyrics about her at parties. During World War II, Mercer served as Americas's troubadour, turning out such uplifting songs as "My Shining Hour" and "Ac-cent-tchu-ate the Positive." He also helped create Capitol Records, the first major West Coast recording company, where he discovered many talented singers, including Peggy Lee and Nat King Cole. During this period, he also began an intense affair with Judy Garland, which rekindled time and again for the rest of their lives. Although they never found happiness together, Garland became Mercer's muse and inspired some of his most sensuous and heartbreaking lyrics: "Blues in the Night," "One for My Baby," and "Come Rain or Come Shine." Mercer amassed a catalog of over a thousand songs and during some years had a song in the Top Ten every week of the year--the songwriting equivalent of Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak--but was plagued by a sense of failure and bitterness over the big Broadway hit that seemed forever out of reach. Based on scores of interviews with friends, family and colleagues, and drawing extensively on Johnny Mercer's letters, papers and his unpublished autobiography, Skylark is an important book about one of the great and dramatic characters in 20th century popular music.

Download or read book Tales From the Hollow written by Scott Kennedy and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2022-11-28 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story begins some 13,000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age, before travelling thousands of years ahead to the early pioneers and the farms they established, and right up to the present day. Readers will learn how the local St. John’s Anglican Church welcomed its first worshippers when Beethoven was still performing in the concert halls of Europe. They will meet Cornelius van Nostrand, born in 1730—twenty-six years before Mozart and eleven years before the first performance of Handel’s Messiah—and now at rest in St. John’s churchyard. This rich history also includes such diverse figures as Amelia Earhart—who discovered her love of flying at an aerodrome overlooking Hogg’s Hollow—and Northern Dancer, the most influential Thoroughbred racehorse in history. Members of the British Royal Family—including two Kings of England—were also regular visitors to the area, staying in later years with E.P. Taylor and his wife Winifred at the Taylors’ Windfields Farm, where Northern Dancer was also a resident.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More has probably been written about the Waterloo campaign than almost any other in history. It was the climax of the Napoleonic Wars and forms a watershed in both European and world history. However, the lethal combination of national bias, wilful distortion and simple error has unfortunately led to the constantly regurgitated traditional 'accepted' version being significantly wrong regarding many episodes in the campaign. Oft-repeated claims have morphed into established fact and, with the bicentenary of this famous battle soon to be commemorated, it is high time that these are challenged and finally dismissed.Gareth Glover has spent a decade uncovering hundreds of previously unpublished eyewitness accounts of the battle and campaign, which have highlighted many of these myths and errors. In this ground-breaking history, based on extensive primary research of all the nations involved, he provides a very readable and beautifully balanced account of the entire campaign while challenging these distorted claims and myths, and he provides clear evidence to back his version of events. His thoughtful reassessment of this decisive episode in world history will be stimulating reading for those already familiar with the Napoleonic period and it will form a fascinating introduction for readers who are discovering this extraordinary event for the first time.
