When Rose offers her a week of R&R in Sitka, Alaska, she's ready to let Rose decide if a relationship is worth the danger. But her plans to win Rose back are interrupted when work intrudes and duty calls Maji to help a SEAL team stop a Russian mobster from harvesting gold from the bottom of Sitka Sound. Rose knows Maji pushed her away to protect her. And she may forgive her, depending on how their week in Sitka goes. But when Maji is called into action on vacation, Rose realizes their love puts Maji in danger, too. Is that a choice she can live with?

Book excerpt: In these uncertain, tumultuous times, our collective vulnerability has been heightened, and positivity has become a precious commodity. More than ever, people are looking for hope and inspiration, and a little magic. Twenty-Two for 22—a collection of 22 literary pieces for 2022—delivers. From India to Egypt and back, these meticulously crafted stories, poems, and travel vignettes bring together disparate lives as varied, colourful, and magical as the places that created them—a plantation, an archeological site in Peru, a post-earthquake neighbourhood in Portugal. Love and betrayal, fear and joy, forgiveness and blessing—each person and place is evocative of the whole of humanity: A poor sweeper woman makes a decision with a startling result. A homeless man in a car accident makes the ultimate gift to the other victim. A memory keeper must pay the price for his avarice. Desert ancients bow to the wisdom of a fourteen-year-old runaway. A room in a faraway land steps back into the pages of history. Such is the fusion of life. Twenty-Two for 22 will be of interest to readers—aged 18 years and older—looking for new writing about new cultures. People who value freedom of self over familial and (or) societal expectations may particularly find themselves reflected in these stories, poems, and travel vignettes.

He relates his experience of being left behind after the rapture, including the ordeals from rejecting the mark of the beast, 666, during the tribulation. As Steven's story unfolds he gives an accounting of the rise and fall of Satan, the Antichrist, and the False Prophet; telling it within the context of regret of not having accepting Christ when he had the chance. Book excerpt: When covert operator Maji Rios returns to her sleepy Long Island refuge after years of being anyone the Army needs her to be, all she wants is a quiet summer. Saving a gorgeous stranger from Russian mobsters on her first night home was not in her plans. Nor was waking up with her the next day, inside the notorious Benedetti family’s estate, already on the clock for her next mission. One brush with danger can't scare Rose diStephano away from her last weeks with her favorite cousin, Angelo Benedetti. How hard could tagging along to Maji's martial arts camp be? Even if it means pretending that Maji is Angelo's girlfriend, rather than the woman she is falling in love with. Maji will do whatever she must to complete her mission. Infiltrate enemy territory? Check. Protect civilians from blowback? Check. Keep Rose from getting too close? Ouch.

Book Bewitching Development

Download or read book Bewitching Development written by James Howard Smith and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days, development inspires scant trust in the West. For critics who condemn centralized efforts to plan African societies as latter day imperialism, such plans too closely reflect their roots in colonial rule and neoliberal economics. But proponents of this pessimistic view often ignore how significant this concept has become for Africans themselves. In Bewitching Development, James Howard Smith presents a close ethnographic account of how people in the Taita Hills of Kenya have appropriated and made sense of development thought and practice, focusing on the complex ways that development connects with changing understandings of witchcraft. Similar to magic, development’s promise of a better world elicits both hope and suspicion from Wataita. Smith shows that the unforeseen changes wrought by development—greater wealth for some, dashed hopes for many more—foster moral debates that Taita people express in occult terms. By carefully chronicling the beliefs and actions of this diverse community—from frustrated youths to nostalgic seniors, duplicitous preachers to thought-provoking witch doctors—BewitchingDevelopment vividly depicts the social life of formerly foreign ideas and practices in postcolonial Africa.
