Book Maintenance of the Fur Supply Classic Reprint

Download or read book Maintenance of the Fur Supply Classic Reprint written by Ned Dearborn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maintenance of the Fur Supply Directly or indirectly, fur contributes to the support or comfort of a large proportion of our population. We import as much fur as we produce. In other words, we could sell at home twice as much fur as we are now producing - not to speak of the foreign demand. The greater part of the fur grown in the United States comes from privately owned land. Landowners can increase and improve the fur taken on their property and make of it a regular source of income. A few species of fur-bearing animals have been domesticated, but with the single exception of the silver fox, none are being farmed extensively enough to influence the fur market. Laws protecting fur bearers are helpful; at present, however, they are not preventing the animals from decreasing in number. There would be better fur and, in the long run, more of it if the open season were not more than two months long. Book The Annual Fur Catch of the United States 1940

Download or read book The Annual Fur Catch of the United States 1940 written by United States Fish and Wildlife Service and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Annual Fur Catch of the United States, 1940: Prepared in the Section of Fur Resources Division of Wildlife Research The wars in Europe and Asia have greatly affected the American fur import and export business° With the shipping of furs practically, if not entirely, stopped, importations are bound to be curtailed for a long time. If the coming year should show a shortage of furs from.forcign countries, the American market will be more and more dependent upon local production. Many persons formerly engaged in trapping in foreign countries had to abandon the pursuit when called into military service. If the demand for furs in the United States continues, then. Unless protective measures prevent, a larger number of fur animals will be trapped to meet that demand. In view of the already precarious condition of many fur species trapping must be limited and shorter seasons promulgated to maintain the supply. The conservation of fur animals, therefore, should be given as much consideration as that of any other natural resource. The people of this country are entitled to know how much of their natural wealth in tho form.of fur is harvested each year. The administration of fish and game may rest with either the State or the Federal governments, but fur animals are generally recognized as the property of the individual States. The maintenance of the fur supply, therefore, must be brought about by the enactment and enforcement of State laws. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fur and the Fur Trade Irving's Astoria; in the records of the Hudson's Bay Company, and in the annals of the fairs held at N ijui Novgorod and Leipsic. Here it may suffice to give some account of the present condition of the trade\ ln fancy furs. The collection of skins is now chiefly a matter of private enterprise. Few, if any, monopolies exist. The Alaska Commercial Conipany, now about ten years old, enjoys some special privilege for the taking of seal skins on the Pribiloff Islands, and some peculiar restrictions exist in Russia in relation to certain peltries, but beyond this, the trade in furs is a free one the world over. Individual enterprise, skill, forecast, and capital, have an open field. The Hudson's Bay Company, with its chief office in London, still maintains its organization, but conducts its. Affairs in North America under no special or royal grant, and com petes in the open market with individual traders throughout Canada, Labrador, Manitoba, and Columbia. Its collection of peltries is offered to the highest bidder at public auction in London, in January, March, and September of each year. Book The Fur Trade of America Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fur Trade of America Classic Reprint written by Agnes C. Laut and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fur Trade of America Is fur trading founded on cruelty? For the past few years, there has been a campaign waged in the United States, which almost charges any one wearing a piece of fur with murder. When that question is asked me, I feel like answering by asking another set of questions - Is child birth cruel? Is any type of birth for animals or humans painless? Should we abolish all birth and strive for the Nirvana of Nothingness because all birth is attended with even greater pain than death? Should we cease to fight for right and award honor to the heroes of war, because the triumph of right must necessarily entail death to those who fight for wrong? But I do not hurl back this bombardment of counter questions; for I realize they are founded on misconceptions; and I love the creatures of the wilds - feathered and furred - with a passion that has taken me to the open every year of my life and keeps me to-day by preference a resident of the country rather than a denizen of the town. As a girl, I learned to shoot. As a woman, I have never fired a shot at a wild creature, except in the air to scare husky dogs away from molesting the ham and bacon stored in our camp kit; and if I hadn't, they would have eaten our boots. The people, who have accused the fur trade of being founded on cruelty, I notice eat game birds and ham and bacon and roast beef and fresh lamb; but that inconsistency apart, let us face the question without any side issues or inconsistencies - Is fur trading founded on cruelty? And I answer unhesitatingly - It is not. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fur Trade of America and Some of the Men Who Made and Maintain It: Together With Furs and Fur Bearers of Other Continents and Countries and Island of the Sea It is interesting to learn that the fur industry in America is definitely linked to the fur trade Of antiquity, and withal extremely gratifying to note the wonderful progress attained in every detail Of the business - the output Of the skilled furrier of to-day is essentially un like a fur Of the first centuries in every particular except the initial stage - the raw skin. The inspired historian Of first things, events follow ing the renewal Of the earth in anticipation of the advent Of man, assures us that very near the beginning fur formed an essential, effective and important part Of the apparel of the human race; and this record has remained uncontradicted by the critical or the curious during the six thousand years, more or less, this little planet has been running its ordered course around the sun. It may seem to be an insignificant matter to engage the pen Of an inspired writer, but it should be noted that it first measurably charged the mind Of the Creator, hands as well as mind, by whom all things, from least to greatest, were created for the possession and peace of the one creature made in His own image. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
