Book Maine Life at the Turn of the Century Through the Photographs of Nettie Cummings Maxim

Download or read book Maine Life at the Turn of the Century Through the Photographs of Nettie Cummings Maxim written by Diane Barnes and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1995 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before her death in 1910, Nettie Cummings Maxim chronicled the people, landscapes, and animals of a typical Maine farm at Bird Hill in Bethel at the turn of the century. In a time before mass media, her world consisted almost entirely of her family and farm. This intimate familiarity with her immediate world and a degree of cultural isolation allowed Nettie to explore and capture on film the details of farm life through the seasons and the innocence and wisdom in the eyes of the children whose lives were so closely entwined with life on a rural Maine hill farm. After one look at her photographs, her innate artistic talent becomes immediately apparent: her use of natural light, the composition of her images, and her eye for detail lend a tremendously beautiful, evocative quality to her images. She turned the long exposures mandated by film at the turn of the century to her advantage, and somehow manages to create the illusion of motion in her photographs. Through her cameras, Nettie recorded the world that was so endearing to her, a world that has gone largely undocumented by photography. In doing so, she has given immortality to the people, buildings, and even the animals that were part of her life and her microcosm of society nearly a century ago, as well as giving us a rare insight into the intricacies of daily life in the nearby communities of Locke's Mills and Greenwood. Allow her to lead you back into life in rural Maine at the turn of the century: it is a journey worth making, and one that you will never forget.

Book Maine Metaphor The Green and Blue House

Download or read book Maine Metaphor The Green and Blue House written by S. Dorman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-09-12 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to live in rural Maine? How--in the 1980s, when descendants of Maine's settlers wonder about our coming out of the Rust Belt in search of work, in search of a life? They were not bitter about our coming here, where jobs were already scarce--they were incredulous. Why did we come? Sometimes I answered, "God." God brought us, the formerly middle-class inept, to live among these most hardy and canny of make-do people. God brought us to experience life in Maine, where my spouse sometimes worked turning and trimming four thousand boards a night, waking to drive one hundred miles round-trip to finish our undergraduate educations with the aid of loans and grants. So I studied the place where we came to live. And I forgot where we came from. Rural Maine was ragged, rugged, hardscrabble, and wild--but full of the most visible, vital, natural creation. I've tried to express that aspect of Maine life in The Green and Blue House. And there is the metaphor, also.

Book When Life Was Young at the Old Farm in Maine Illustrated

Download or read book When Life Was Young at the Old Farm in Maine Illustrated written by C. Stephens and published by . This book was released on 2016-11-19 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C. A. Stephens' classic tale of old country life in Maine, New England during the late 19th century is brought to reader in this edition which includes the original illustrations. Steeped in nostalgia for an America long since departed, this novel is full of the virtues and sights common to American country life before modern inventions such as the motor car and the telephone made their appearance. Family values underpin the entire society, with the land around the Old Squire's Farm vividly described as quiet and rural. Sometimes likened to diaries for their episodic structure, the stories of C. A. Stephens remain as pleasant and enlightening today as they ever were. The family depicted in this book have experienced tragedy; the fathers of the children of the story having perished in the American Civil War, hence it being just the children and their grandparents. As well as being a good and wholesome story, When Life Was Young at the Old Farm in Maine provides a glimpse at life in the rural United States during a much simpler and more pastoral era. The children enjoy their adventures in the country, experiencing events such as the cattle show, a trip to the village photographer, and fishing in the local water holes, while their grandparents are eager to teach them to grow up to be responsible adults.

Book Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill Maine

Download or read book Jonathan Fisher of Blue Hill Maine written by Kevin D. Murphy and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the life of Jonathan Fisher (1768-1847), a native of Braintree, Massachusetts, and graduate of Harvard College who moved in his late twenties to Blue Hill, Maine, where he embarked on a multifaceted career as a pioneer minister, farmer, entrepreneur, and artist. Drawing on a vast record of letters, diaries, sermons, drawings, paintings, and buildings, Kevin D. Murphy reconstructs Fisher's story and uses it to explore larger issues of material culture, visual culture, and social history during the early decades of the American republic. Murphy shows how Fisher, as pastor of the Congregational church in Blue Hill from 1796 to 1837, helped spearhead the transformation of a frontier settlement on the eastern shores of the Penobscot Bay into a thriving port community; how he used his skills as an architect, decorative painter, surveyor, and furniture maker not only to support himself and his family, but to promote the economic growth of his village; and how the fluid professional identity that enabled Fisher to prosper on the eastern frontier could only have existed in early America where economic relations were far less rigidly defined than in Europe. Among the most important artifacts of Jonathan Fisher's life is the house he designed and built in Blue Hill. The Jonathan Fisher Memorial, as it is now known, serves as a point of departure for an examination of social, religious, and cultural life in a newly established village at the turn of the nineteenth century. Fisher's house provided a variety of spaces for agricultural and domestic work, teaching, socializing, artmaking, and more. Through the eyes of Jonathan Fisher, we see his family grow and face the challenges of the new century, responding to religious, social, and economic change--sometimes succeeding and sometimes failing. We appreciate how an extraordinarily energetic man was able to capitalize on the wide array of opportunities offered by the frontier to give shape to his personal vision of community.

Book Maine s Steamboating Past

  • Author : Donald A. Wilson
  • Publisher : Arcadia Library Editions

  • ISBN : 9781531630843
  • Pages : 130 pages

Download or read book Maine s Steamboating Past written by Donald A. Wilson and published by Arcadia Library Editions. This book was released on 2007-06 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maine steamboats existed in two different arenas: the ocean steamers that traveled up the coast and the inland steamers, which are the focus of this book. The Maine wilderness once witnessed an enormous movement of people, goods, and mail through steamboat traffic. Originally freighters provided supplies and merchandise for the lumber industry and, with the lack of roads, they were the only dependable transportation to many sporting lodges and resorts. Boat traffic also delivered indispensable goods to lakeside villages and outposts. Eventually sportsmen and vacationers discovered the beauties of the lakes and mountains, and steamboat companies formed early in the 19th century to serve the growing numbers of visitors and businesses. Thousands of families trekked from the southern cities to the interior to delight in a popular Northeast pastime. Getting to places was a chore as well as an adventure, and the railroads and the steamboats did the job. At one time, they facilitated the cycles of life in the Maine woods.

Book Hauling by Hand

  • Pages : 0 pages

Download or read book Hauling by Hand written by Dean Lunt and published by Islandport Press. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hauling by Hand tells the remarkable story of Frenchboro, Long Island, which sits eight miles off the coast, making it one of the state's most remote outposts. It is one of only 14 Maine islands still supporting a year-round community, while only a century ago, there were some 300 such communities. The island's roots were set in the 1820s by the Lunt family and a small band of pioneers who together carved an island community from the spruce and granite shores. Fueled by the shipping and fishing industries, Long Island evolved from outpost to important offshore port before economic changes transformed the island into a hardscrabble turn-of-the-century fishing village where nearly 200 residents scratched a living from depleted fishing stocks and rocky soil. Today, the town of Frenchboro has a population of nearly 50 people, but it has neither a general store, nor tourist hotel, nor daily ferry service. Instead there is a village, a soul, and a way of life.
