Download or read book The Forts of Maine Silent Sentinels of the Pine Tree State written by Harry Gratwick and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join local author Harry Gratwick as he uncovers stories of adventure and bravery from the forts of Maine. Whether dotting the coastline, guarding the banks of the Kennebec or defending the Canadian border, Maine's many forts have sheltered its towns and people since the seventeenth century. Both Fort Kent and Fort Fairfield were built after the War of 1812 during the Aroostook War, when hostilities raged between Mainers and British Canadians over the region's rich timber stands. Portland Harbor's Fort Preble became embroiled in the Civil War when a Confederate raider tried--and failed--to steal a ship from its waters. In the twentieth century, Maine's preservationists protected many of these citadels, including Fort Knox in Penobscot Bay, the largest and most elaborate of all Maine's forts.

Book The Haunted Fort

Download or read book The Haunted Fort written by Liza Gardner Walsh and published by Down East Books. This book was released on 2013-06-16 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year visitors flock to Maine’s Fort Knox near the mouth of the Penobscot River. They are drawn by the thousands for its glimpse into Maine’s military past, but also for it's haunted aspects. The fort was catapulted to national attention when the prime-time TV show Ghost Hunters filmed an episode there. Since no shots were ever fired from the fort, who might the ghost or ghosts be? Now, Gardner Walsh delves into the creepy nature of the fort to find the answer. She explores the history of the fort and some of the Indian legends of the area from before the fort was built; provides interviews of staff and eye-witness accounts of ghost sightings at the fort; and she offers a fun look at how the fort makes the most of its attention by hosting its annual Fright at the Fort—called the "best Halloween experience in Maine”—and the summer Paranormal Faire. Woven throughout, Walsh recounts her own haunted adventure when she spent a night locked in the fort with the East Coast Ghost Trackers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When war broke out between the United States and Great Britain in 1812, neither side was prepared for the conflict, as evidenced by their respective fortifications. The most sophisticated and modern fortifications were those built by the US Corps of Engineers to protect some of the main port cities. These included Fort Mifflin in Philadelphia, Fort McHenry in Baltimore and Castle William in New York. The British also heavily fortified their main harbor at Halifax and their main center of power at Quebec. However, elsewhere, especially in the interior, fortifications were old, neglected or only hastily erected. The forts at Detroit and Mackinac were much as the British had left them in 1796. This book covers all of the main fortifications of the conflict, those that faced the crashing of guns and those whose intimidation played a part in the grand strategy of the war.

Book excerpt: First published in 1996, this encyclopedia is a comprehensive reference resource that pulls together a vast amount of material on a rich historical era, presenting it in a balanced way that offers hard-to-find facts and detailed information. The volume was the first encyclopedic account of the United States' colonial military experience. It features 650 essays by more than 130 historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, geographers, and other scholarly experts on a variety of topics that cover all of colonial America's diverse peoples. In addition to wars, battles, and treaties, analytical essays explore the diplomatic and military history of over 50 Native American groups, as well as Dutch, English, French, Spanish, and Swiss colonies. It's the first source to consult for the political activities of an Indian nation, the details about the disposition of forces in a battle, or the significance of a fort to its size, location, and strength. In addition to its reference capabilities, the book's detailed material has been, and will continue to be highly useful to students as a supplementary text and as a handy source for reporters and papers.
