Book excerpt: Excerpt from Main Street: The Story of Carol Kennicott Even when she was tired her dark eyes were observant. She did not yet know the immense ability of the world to be casually cruel and proudly dull, but if she should ever learn those dismaying powers, her eyes would never become sullen or heavy or rheumily amorous. Book excerpt: Carol Milford grows up in a mid-sized town in Minnesota before moving to Chicago for college. After her education, during which she’s exposed to big-city life and culture, she moves to Minneapolis to work as a librarian. She soon meets Will Kennicott, a small-town doctor, and the two get married and move to Gopher Prairie, Kennicott’s home town. Carol, inspired by big-city ideas, soon begins chafing at the seeming quaintness and even backwardness of the townsfolk, and their conservative, self-satisfied way of life. She struggles to try to reform the town in her image, while finding meaning in the seeming cultural desert she’s found herself in and in her increasingly cold marriage. Gopher Prairie is a detailed, satirical take on small-town American life, modeled after Sauk Centre, the town in which Lewis himself grew up. The town is fully realized, with generations of inhabitants interacting in a complex web of village society. Its bitingly satirical portrayal made Main Street highly acclaimed by its contemporaries, though many thought the satirical take was perhaps a bit too dark and hopeless. The book’s celebration and condemnation of small town life make it a candidate for the title of the Great American Novel. Main Street was awarded the 1921 Pulitzer Prize, but the decision was overturned by the prize’s Board of Trustees and awarded instead to Edith Wharton for The Age of Innocence. When Lewis went on to win the 1926 Pulitzer for Arrowsmith, he declined it—with the New York Times reporting that he did so because he was still angry at the Pulitzers for being denied the prize for Main Street. Despite the book’s snub at the Pulitzers, Lewis went on to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, with Main Street being cited as one of the reasons for his win.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Main-Street IT was one of the early literary projects of Nathaniel Hawthorne to put life into the dead body of New England historical annals. How lifeless those annals were we may discover by hunting them up on the dust-covered shelves of antiquarian libraries; and the enterprise of endowing them with bloom and fragrance would seem as hopeless an one as could be proposed to a literary man. But Hawthorne possessed creative genius, and that made all the difference. He himself was able to see through the veil of the printed page of the old annalist, and to behold rising before his imaginative vision, the world and the personages that had been, warm with life and glowing with color and passion. This vision be aimed to communicate, by the art of lucid and vivid portrayal and suggestion, in which he has had no superior, to his fellow citizens; by this beneficent spell he wrought upon them to make the acquaintance of their own past. It was in work of this kind, having this tendency, that the foundation of his genius first declared itself; and it is not unlikely that, for several years, Hawthorne cher. Book Main Street and Wall Street Classic Reprint

Download or read book Main Street and Wall Street Classic Reprint written by William Z. Ripley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Main Street and Wall Street This book is not just a treatise on economics; nor is it a handy manual for investors. It purports to go deeper than that, down toward the root of things. It is partly the expression of a lifelong aspiration to promote a greater equality of opportunity among men - a more even chance at getting a living all round, and a fairer show at conserving the fruits of such activity thereafter. Only thus can there be any real pleasure in work and in thrift in the world. And it is upon the reasonable exer cise of these virtues that our American democratic polity must depend for its perpetuation. It should be a prime function of government to stimulate and in every way to protect the manifestation of these basic instincts. Property should never be allowed to degenerate into an instrument of oppression. Its only justification in a free state is that it shall contribute to such an equality of opportunity for all members of the community alike, that each one shall be more able to take care of and to make the best of himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Carl's Tour in Main Street "Carl's Tour in Main Street" was the joint production of John S. C. Knowlton and Clarendon Wheelock. The latter, familiar from early life with Worcester men, localities and affairs, supplied the incidents from his store of recollection; and Mr. Knowlton rendered them into the charming and quaintly-phrased story, imparting to it the quality and interest of a veritable narrative. The "Tour" was published in numbers in the Worcester Palladium (of which Mr. Knowlton was the founder, and until his death, the editor) of 1855; and was by request reprinted in that paper in 1857-58, and again in 1874. • ISBN :
  • Pages : 180 pages

Download or read book Main Street written by Martin Bucco and published by Macmillan Reference USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story is set in the small town of Gopher Prairie, Minnesota, a fictionalized version of Sauk Centre, Minnesota, Lewis's hometown. The novel takes place in the 1910s, with references to the start of World War I, the United States' entry into the war, and the years following the end of the war, including the start of Prohibition. Satirizing small-town life, Main Street is perhaps Sinclair Lewis's most famous book, and led in part to his eventual 1930 Nobel Prize for Literature. It relates the life and struggles of Carol Milford Kennicott as she comes into conflict with the small-town mentality of the residents of Gopher Prairie. Highly acclaimed upon publication, Main Street remains a recognized American classic.

His paper on A Consular Experience likewise is a frank talk behind the door with his reader, but is in effect a series of humorous studies of character in which this silent man indulged. Between these two personal, lightly autobiographical disclosures was a third, which perhaps has been even more read, for it stands at the entrance of his most famous book, The Scarlet Letter. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spring Street: A Story of Los Angeles One day the editor stopped beside my desk and told me he wanted me to write a novel about Los Angeles to appear in serial form. Seven weeks later "Spring Street" was on his desk. I was assigned to write it as I would have been assigned as a reporter to "cover" a big story. Writing a novel to appear as a serial in a newspaper is vastly different from writing one for publication in book form. "Spring Street" was written primarily as a serial and is offered now as a book in response to requests by friends and from readers of The Evening Herald. Let me say that I lay no claim to being a novelist because I wrote "Spring Street." I have sufficient pride in my profession to desire to be known only as a reporter. There are many to whom I owe thanks for their help and encouragement. Especially am I indebted to Dr. Frank F. Barham, publisher of The Evening Herald, and Mr. Edwin R. Collins, Mr. John B. T. Campbell and Mr. Wesley M. Barr, its editors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
