  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1989-01-26
  • ISBN : 0521326605
  • Pages : 270 pages

Download or read book Magnetoresistance in Metals written by A. B. Pippard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1989-01-26 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, this book contained the first systematic account of magnetoresistance in metals, the study of which has provided solid-state physicists with much valuable information about electron motion in metals. The electrical resistance of a metal is usually changed when a magnetic field is applied to it; at low temperatures the change may be very large indeed and when magnetic breakdown is involved, very complex. Every metal behaves differently, and the effect is highly dependent on the direction of the field relative to the crystal axes. Quite apart from its usefulness for determining the Ferni surfaces of individual metals, the phenomenon presents many interesting problems in its own right; it is the phenomenon, rather than its applications, that Professor Pippard concentrates on in this book. The level of treatment is aimed at readers with a basic knowledge of undergraduate solid-state physics, and makes no great demand on mathematical ability. The text is copiously illustrated with real experimental results.

Book Solid State Physics for Metallurgists

Download or read book Solid State Physics for Metallurgists written by Richard J. Weiss and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Physics and Physical Metallurgy, Volume 6: Solid State Physics for Metallurgists provides an introduction to the basic understanding of the properties that make materials useful to mankind. This book discusses the electronic structure of matter, which is the domain of solid state physics. Organized into 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the electronic structure of free atoms and the electronic structure of solids. This text then examines the basis of the Bloch theorem, which is the exact periodicity of the potential. Other chapters consider the fundamental assumption in the solid whereby the bonding electrons between atoms act as nearly harmonic oscillator spring being somewhat stiffer in compression than expansion. This book discusses as well the various properties of the nucleus. The final chapter deals with the different experimental measurements on copper and iron. This book is a valuable resource for metallurgists, experimentalists, and solid state physicists.

Book Anomalous Effects in Simple Metals

Download or read book Anomalous Effects in Simple Metals written by Albert Overhauser and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-07-28 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using potassium as an example, this work presents a unique approach to the anomalous effects in metals, resulting in knowledge that can be applied to similar materials. Most theoretical predictions on the electric, magnetic, optical, and thermal properties of a simple metal do - surprisingly - not agree with experimental behavior found in alkali metals. The purpose of this volume is to document the many phenomena that have violated expectations. It collects in one place the research by Albert Overhauser, one of the pioneers of the field. His and his collaborators work has led to a unified synthesis of alkali metal peculiarities. The unique collection of 65 reprint papers, commented where necessary to explain the context and perspective, is preceded by a thorough and well paced introduction. The book is meant to advanced solid state physics and science historians. It might also serve as additional reading in advanced solid state physics courses. With a foreword by Mildred and Gene Dresselhaus

Book Investigation of the Hydraulics of Horizontal Drains in Plumbing Systems

Download or read book Investigation of the Hydraulics of Horizontal Drains in Plumbing Systems written by Robert S. Wyly and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are reported from an investigation of the hydraulics of flow in experimental apparatus simulating nominally horizontal simple and branching drains of plumbing systems. The data are correlated with limited findings in an earlier, unpublished NBS study the results of which have been utilized in current plumbing codes. The need for further research is pointed out, particularly in relation to hydraulic performance of drain systems as affected by steep slopes, drain storage volume, energy losses at stack bases, attenuation of water depths and discharge rates in long drains, and large drain diameters.

Book Frontiers of 4D and 5D transition Metal Oxides

Download or read book Frontiers of 4D and 5D transition Metal Oxides written by Gang Cao and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at advanced undergraduates, graduate students and other researchers who possess an introductory background in materials physics and/or chemistry, and an interest in the physical and chemical properties of novel materials, especially transition metal oxides.New materials often exhibit novel phenomena of great fundamental and technological importance. Contributing authors review the structural, physical and chemical properties of notable 4d- and 5d-transition metal oxides discovered over the last 10 years. These materials exhibit extraordinary physical properties that differ significantly from those of the heavily studied 3d-transition metal oxides, mainly due to the relatively strong influence of the spin-orbit interaction and orbital order in 4d- and 5d materials. The immense growth in publications addressing the physical properties of these novel materials underlines the need to document recent advances and the current state of this field. This book includes overviews of the current experimental situation concerning these materials.
