Book excerpt: It is a dream of chemists and physicists to use magnetism, an important physical property of many materials, to control chemical and physical processes. With new manufacturing technologies for superconducting magnets, it has become possible to produce strong magnetic fields of 10 Tesla or more for applications in chemistry and physics. New magnetic phenomena, useful for processing functional molecules with improved quality, have been discovered recently. They open up exciting possibilities for studying and applying magnetic field effects in the chemical and physical processes of diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic materials. This volume will serve as a useful reference for specialists and non-specialists interested in this exciting new area of megneto-science.
Download or read book Magnetobiology written by Vladimir N. Binhi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-03-08 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are immersed in electromagnetic fields from such sources as power lines, domestic appliances, mobile phones, and even electrical storms. All living beings sense electric fields, but the physical origins of the phenomenon are still unclear. Magnetobiology considers the effects of electromagnetic fields on living organisms. It provides a comprehensive review of relevant experimental data and theoretical concepts, and discusses all major modern hypotheses on the physical nature of magnetobiological effects. It also highlights some problems that have yet to be solved and points out new avenues for research. Why do some people feel unwell during a lightning storm? Why is there a correlation between the level of electromagnetic background and the incidence of cancer? Why do so many medical centers use electromagnetic exposures to treat a wide variety of disorders in humans? The international scientific community is extremely interested in a theory of magnetobiology and the answers to these and other questions, as evidenced by the growing number of research associations in the United States, Europe, and other parts of the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has named electromagnetic contamination in occupational and residential areas as a stress factor for human beings. This book stands out among recent texts on magnetobiology because it draws on a strong foundation of empirical and theoretical evidence to explain the various effects of magnetic fields on the human body. It contains the first comprehensive collection of experimental data bearing physical information, frequency and amplitude/power spectra, and original research data on how electromagnetic fields interfere with ions and molecules inside the proteins of living organisms. - Introduction is written so that it will be understandable to a wide scientific community regardless of their specialisation - First comprehensive collection of experimental data bearing physical information, frequency and amplitude/power spectra - Original theoretical research data on the interference of ions and molecules inside proteins - Appendix covers physical questions most relevant for magnetobiology. In particular there is an original exposition of the magnetic resonance basic principles
Download or read book Magneto Biology and Medicine written by Anatoly Buchachenko and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is controlled by chemistry. Chemistry is not the whole life but the life is totally chemistry. Chemistry is a key to biology. Nothing in biology can be understood without chemistry and chemical reactions. There are many factors controlling biochemical reactions, however the most intriguing is the magnetic field. The ability to respond to magnetic fields is ubiquitous and universal among the five kingdoms of organisms. Magneto-biology is a field of knowledge which considers phenomena accompanying the influence of magnetic fields, permanent and alternating, on the biological systems at all levels: molecular, cellular, and whole organism. There is no doubt that magnetic fields do the human health and feeling of well-being; the latter is a key factor stimulating both social and scientific interest in magneto-biology. This book considers numerous biological and biomedical effects of the two magnetic fields: internal fields created by magnetic nuclei, and external magnetic fields, both permanent and oscillating. It critically summarizes magnetic effects on the biological clocks, biological compass for orientation and navigation of migrating animals, the influence of cells phones on the health. It demonstrates magnetic and isotope effects on the food chains and metabolism, ecology and epidemiology. It explains the origin of trans-cranial magnetic stimulation of cognitive processes to prevent neurodegenerative disorders; it enlightens magnetic stimulation of the ATP synthesis and protein phosphorylation, magnetic control of the DNA synthesis and gene expression. It shows how magnetic fields can be used to eliminate ATP deficiency at cardiac diseases and how to use magnetic stable isotope ions as the medical agents against hypoxia and cardiac insufficiency, as a means for controlling cell proliferation and stimulating destruction and apoptosis of the cancer cells. The uniqueness of this book is that it is focused on the chemical biology and medicine, on the discovery and analysis of chemical magneto-dependent mechanisms. This book gives a collection of scattered information, its critical analysis, generalization and explanation of physics and chemistry of magneto-biological effects as a basis for the deliberate usage in medicine (for the trans-cranial magnetic stimulation of cognitive processes and genetics, in particular).

Download or read book Modern Magnetooptics and Magnetooptical Materials written by A.K Zvezdin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern Magnetooptics and Magnetooptical Materials provides a comprehensive account of the principles and applications of magnetooptics, bridging the gap between textbooks and specialist accounts in the research and review literature. The book is aimed at the graduate physicist and electrical engineer, but assumes no specialist knowledge of magnetooptics. Chapters have been designed to be reasonably independent, so that readers in search of information on a particular topic can go straight to the appropriate place in the book, with only occasional reference to material elsewhere. Divided into three main parts, the book begins with the principles of magnetooptics to provide the necessary theoretical background. This section's emphasis is on introducing practical considerations through examples taken from real-life situations. The next part surveys a wide range of magnetooptic materials, including metals, alloys, and granular structures. The final part explores applications of magnetooptics in practical devices, such as modulators, switches, memory devices, and waveguides. This book provides a thorough introduction for graduate students of physics and electrical engineering, and a useful reference for researchers.
