Book excerpt: By browsing about 10 000 000 scientific articles of over 200 major journals mainly in a 'cover to cover approach' some 200 000 publications were selected. The extracted data is part of the following fundamental material research fields: crystal structures (S), phase diagrams (also called constitution) (C) and the comprehensive field of intrinsic physical properties (P). This work has been done systematically starting with the literature going back to 1900. The above mentioned research field codes (S, C, P) as well as the chemical systems investigated in each publication were included in the present work. The aim of the Inorganic Substances Bibliography is to provide researchers with a comprehensive compilation of all up to now published scientific publications on inorganic systems in only three handy volumes.

Book Magnetic Properties of Rare Earth Metals

Download or read book Magnetic Properties of Rare Earth Metals written by R. Elliott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rare earths have a unique place among the elements. Although very much alike chemically and in most phy~ical properties they each have very different and striking magnetic properties. The reason, of course, lies in their 4f electrons which determine the magnetic properties but have little effect on other chemical and physical behaviour. Although they are not rare, some indeed are among the more common heavy elements in the earth's crust, the difficulty of separation has meant that their intricate magnetic properties have only recently been unravelled. Now, however, the general pattern of their magnetism is well charted and the underlying theory is well understood. Both are thoroughly summarised in this book. It provides an excellent example of the kind of extensive synthesis which is possible with modem solid state physics. it represents only a high plateau in the ascent to complete understanding. But It will become clear to the reader that while the overall position is satisfactory there are many details still to be elucidated experimentally and much to be done theoretically before all the underlying forces are identified and estimated from a priori calculations. It is hoped that the book will provide a useful stimulus in this direction. It should also be of use to those who are interested in related disciplines, for example the rare earth compounds, or the transition metals. In addition rare earths promise to be important technologically as alloy constituents.

Book Assessment of phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties in the Fe RE RE rare earth metals binary systems

Download or read book Assessment of phase equilibria and thermodynamic properties in the Fe RE RE rare earth metals binary systems written by Hongjian Ye and published by OAE Publishing Inc.. This book was released on 2023-07-12 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on investigating phase equilibria and thermodynamic stability of intermetallic compounds made of the transition metal Fe and rare earth (RE) elements. By using the CALPHAD method and reliable experimental information from the literature, the binary systems of Fe-Y, Fe-Er, and Fe-Lu were reassessed. To improve our previous calculations of Fe-RE (RE = Tb and Dy) binary systems, the Gibbs energy expressions of intermetallic compounds Fe2Tb and Fe2Dy were modified to avoid artificial breaks in their heat capacity curves. Thermodynamic parameters obtained are self-consistent, and the Gibbs energies of the Fe-RE (RE = Tb, Dy, Er, Lu, and Y) phases were accurately expressed to reappear available both thermodynamic data and phase equilibria. This work was further combined with the previous calculations of the Fe-RE (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Ho, and Tm) systems to discuss thermodynamic characteristics and phase equilibria of Fe-RE binary systems in detail. A trend was noticed for the change of thermodynamic properties and phase equilibria of the Fe-RE binary systems with RE atomic number. Generally, as the RE atomic number increases, the formation temperatures of the Fe-RE intermetallic compounds increase gradually, and the enthalpy of mixing of liquid Fe-RE (apart from Fe-Y and Fe-Ce) alloys and the enthalpy of formation of the Fe-RE (apart from Fe-Y, Fe-Ce, Fe-Gd, and Fe-Dy) intermetallic compounds become increasingly negative. The results provide a thorough set of thermodynamic parameters of thirteen Fe-RE binary systems, which could serve as a sound basis for developing a thermodynamic database of Fe-RE-based alloy systems.

Book Introduction to Frustrated Magnetism

Download or read book Introduction to Frustrated Magnetism written by Claudine Lacroix and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-01-12 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of highly frustrated magnetism has developed considerably and expanded over the last 15 years. Issuing from canonical geometric frustration of interactions, it now extends over other aspects with many degrees of freedom such as magneto-elastic couplings, orbital degrees of freedom, dilution effects, and electron doping. Its is thus shown here that the concept of frustration impacts on many other fields in physics than magnetism. This book represents a state-of-the-art review aimed at a broad audience with tutorial chapters and more topical ones, encompassing solid-state chemistry, experimental and theoretical physics.
