This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains most of the contributions presented at the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Rare Earth Transition Metal Borocarbides (Nitrides): Superconducting, Magnetic and Normal State Properties, held in Dresden, Germany at 13 - 18 June 2000. The Workshop was chaired by K. -H. MUller and V. N. Narozhnyi. This was the first meeting specially focused on the quaternary rare-earth transition-metal borocarbides and nitrides - a new class of magnetic superconductors discovered in 1994. The motivation for organizing this workshop was to bring together scientists (both experimentalists and theoreticians), actively working in this field in different countries, using different methods, to exchange their points of view on the properties ofthese materials and to recognize the directions for future research. Totally 48 participants from 17 countries ofEurope, the United States, BraZil, India, Israel and Japan took part in this meeting. In addition about 15 observers (mainly from Germany) attended. The scientific Programme of the Workshop was composed of 7 sections. The section Introduction and Overview was followed by the Electronic Structure and Properties and Phonon Spectra; Magnetic Properties and CEF Effects; Interplay between Superconductivity and Magnetism; Vortex Lattice; Thin Films; Nature of the Superconducting State in Borocarbides sections. Totally 50 presentations were given (45 ofthem in oral form). Considerable attention was devoted to the characterization of the particular place of borocarbides amongst the other magnetic and superconducting systems and, especially, magnetic superconductors.

Book Electronic Structure and Magnetism of 3d Transition Metal Pnictides

Download or read book Electronic Structure and Magnetism of 3d Transition Metal Pnictides written by Kazuko Motizuki and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of investigations into the magnetic properties of 3d-transition metal compounds. In particular, it deals with 3d-metal pnictides (i.e., compounds containing phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth). Part I reports the experimental data together with phenomenological discussions from fundamental and application view points. Part II addresses how some of interesting behaviors mentioned in Part I can be explained on the basis of an itinerant electron picture. Band structures obtained by first-principle calculations are applied to introduce theories to calculate various properties such as susceptibility, magnetic ordering, and magnetic transitions, etc.

Book Handbook of Crystal Structures and Magnetic Properties of Rare Earth Intermetallics

Download or read book Handbook of Crystal Structures and Magnetic Properties of Rare Earth Intermetallics written by Andrej Szytula and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rare-earth intermetallics, also known as lanthanide elements, play an important role in the study of magnetic materials and the development of semi- and super-conducting materials. This handbook provides an up-to-date compilation of crystallographic, physical, and magnetic data on rare-earth intermetallic compounds. Over 20 different structure types are described in detail with an emphasis on how crystal structure can affect magnetic properties. Theoretical models for magnetic interactions are described as well as the impact of crystal electric fields on transport properties, magneto crystalline anistropy and hyperfine interactions. This book provides materials scientists, engineers and physicists with all the critical information needed to use rare-earth intermetallics effectively in the development of new materials.

Book Magnetoelectric and Multiferroic Properties in Layered 3d Transition Metal Oxides

Download or read book Magnetoelectric and Multiferroic Properties in Layered 3d Transition Metal Oxides written by Jungmin Hwang and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Functional ferroelectric and magnetic materials have played an important role of modern technology in the sensor or storage device industries. Ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism emerge from different origins. However, it is discovered that these two seemingly unrelated phenomena can actually coexist in materials called multiferroics. Since current trends toward device miniaturization have increased interests in combining electronic and magnetic properies into multifunctional materials, multiferroics have attracted great attention. Ferromagnetic ferroelectric multiferroics are especially fascinating not only because they have both ferroic properties, but also because of the magnetoelectric coupling which leads the interaction between the magnetic and electric polarization. Recent theoretical breakthroughs in understanding the coexistence of magnetic and electrical ordering have regenerated a great interests in research of such magnetoelectric multiferroics. The long-sought control of electric polarization by magneticfields was recently discovered in `frustrated magnets', for example the perovskites RMnO3, RMn2O5 (R- rare earth elements), Ni3V2O8, delafossite CuFeO2, spinel CoCr2O4, MnWO4, etc. In this dissertation, I have explored several magnetoelectric materials and multiferroics, which show significant magnetoelectric interactions between electric and magnetic orderings. The objects of my projects are focused on understanding the origins of such magnetoelectric couplings and establishing the magnetic/electric phase diagrams and the spin structures. I believe that my works would help to understand the mechanisms of magnetoelectric effects and multiferroics.

This book was released on 1990-09-12 with total page 545 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 19 of Group III (Crystal and Solid State Physics) deals with the magnetic properties of metals, alloys and metallic compounds. The amount of information available in this field is so substantial that several subvolumes are needed to cover it all. Subvolumes III/19a through III/19f treat the intrinsic magnetic properties, i.e. those magnetic properties which depend only on the chemical composition and the crystal structure. So far, subvolumes III/19a, III/19b, III/19c and III/19e2 have appeared; III/19e1 is due in the near future. Subvolume III/19d is concerned with the magnetic data of metallic compounds of rare elements with the 3d, 4d and 5d transition elements. The present part III/19d2 is the first to be published; part III/19d1 will follow shortly. Data on the properties that depend on the preparation of the samples measured, as for instance, thin films, amorphous alloys or the magnetic alloys used in technical applications, are being compiled in the last subvolumes of III/19: III/19g, III/19h and III/19i, of which III/19g has already appeared.

Book Electrochemistry of Metal Chalcogenides

Download or read book Electrochemistry of Metal Chalcogenides written by Mirtat Bouroushian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-23 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author provides a unified account of the electrochemical material science of metal chalcogenide (MCh) compounds and alloys with regard to their synthesis, processing and applications. Starting with the chemical fundamentals of the chalcogens and their major compounds, the initial part of the book includes a systematic description of the MCh solids on the basis of the Periodic Table in terms of their structures and key properties. This is followed by a general discussion on the electrochemistry of chalcogen species, and the principles underlying the electrochemical formation of inorganic compounds/alloys. The core of the book offers an insight into available experimental results and inferences regarding the electrochemical preparation and microstructural control of conventional and novel MCh structures. It also aims to survey their photoelectrochemistry, both from a material-oriented point of view and as connected to specific processes such as photocatalysis and solar energy conversion. Finally, the book illustrates the relevance of MCh materials to various applications of electrochemical interest such as (electro)catalysis in fuel cells, energy storage with intercalation electrodes, and ion sensing.
