Book excerpt: - The ultimate Madonna book before she became a pop icon- Updated from the 1979 edition to include recently-discovered and never-before published photos of a then-unknown MadonnaMartin H. M. Schreiber rose to international prominence when his shots of a nude, pre-fame Madonna appeared in the September 1985 issue of Playboy magazine. While he is proud of the shots, Schreiber regrets not having had the chance to do a one-on-one shoot with Madonna. "I was taking pictures from behind my students, it wasn't as if I had a private session and could get her to do what I wanted her to do." It was February 1979 when a quiet, shy young woman walked into Martin's studio to serve as a model for his photography class. The 'dancer', as she modestly described herself, was Madonna Ciccone. She arrived in New York in 1978 having bought a one-way ticket from Michigan, with only $35 in her pocket. Life modeling for art classes was a way of making a living. Little did Martin know at the time that this more or less chance encounter would lead to one of the most memorable photo shoots of all time. After the huge success of Martin H.M. Schreiber's Madonna Nudes in the 1990s the new edition Madonna Nudes + features many recently discovered and never published photos of Madonna besides a selection of the best images published in Madonna Nudes 1979 edition.

Download or read book Nudes written by Lee Friedlander and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1991 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Nude lies at the centre of Western art. From the beginning of photography it has attracted photographers, many of whom have imitated the forms and postures portrayed by painters. There are a few moments when a photographer has abandoned derivative styles and allowed the viewer to see the body in completely new manner. This occured in America in the work of Edward Weston and in Britain in the work of Bill Brandt. It now occurs in the photographs of Lee Friedlander. ver the last fifteen years, Friedlander has been working with a number of models to create his own way of seeing and photographing the female nude. Little of this work has ever appeared. The photographs are both highly intimate and coolly detached. The frequently surprising perspectives are balanced by the mundane backdrops of ordinary life, the real domestic interiors of the models. his book is published on the occasion of an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and confirms Friedlander's stature as one of the greatest photographers of his generation. He appears to have taken a primary theme of Western art and re-invented it."

Download or read book Madonna Biography of the World s Greatest Pop Singer written by Karen Lac and published by Hyperink Inc. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK In 1984, a young pop musician with a few hits under her belt gave an energetic performance on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. After the performance, Dick Clark asked of the young woman: "What do you hope will happen, not only in 1984 but for the rest of your professional life? What are your dreams? What's left?” Without missing a beat, Madonna replied that she wanted "to rule the world." Twenty-eight years after her bold response, Madonna’s accomplishments and popularity demonstrate that, in a way, this proclamation proved prophetic. Madonna is undoubtedly an international celebrity. Thanks to the spread of MTV and the Internet, Madonna’s music has become a fixture in the lives of people as far away as Zimbabwe. She has achieved a level of fame that causes her to be known by people across the world, regardless of culture, age, or sex. Even those who don’t listen to music know who Madonna is. Right from the start, Madonna seemed to have a plan on how to dominate the world. She wasn’t just satisfied with having a successful music career. Right after her first two albums, both of which were blockbuster albums that produced numerous hit singles such as “Like a Virgin,” “Holiday,” and “Material Girl,” she dabbled in movies and became a movie star. With her messy chic style that was mimicked by girls everywhere, she also became a fashion icon. Her presence and influence was so great in the 1980s that her style and music has come to characterise the decade. As time went on, the world saw that Madonna wasn’t just some entertainer who loved to shock people. Of course, she did a great job of that over the years, by doing things such as wearing scanty clothing while draped in crucifix necklaces, kissing other women, and releasing a soft porn coffee table book. But perhaps the real reason why she hasn’t disappeared yet is because Madonna is extremely smart and shrewd. Her accomplishments in the music industry alone include selling more than 300 million records worldwide, ranking as the world’s top-selling female recording artist and top solo artist, several sold-out tours, and multiple Grammy awards. This hardly scratches the surface of what she’s done with her life. By reinventing herself over and over again and diversifying her talents, she had managed to keep herself relevant and exciting. Not only is she a singer and actress, she’s also a movie producer, songwriter, author, philanthropist, and business entrepreneur. She is one of those rare people who have become a part of American culture itself. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK So after struggling for several years in New York City, Madonna finally hit it big in the early ‘80s. Her first album, the self-titled Madonna, featured several Billboard top hits, including “Holiday,” “Borderline,” and “Lucky Star.” At MTV’s very first Video Music Awards, she performed her new song “Like a Virgin” to promote her upcoming album of the same name. Performing on top of a giant wedding cake and writhing around on the floor while dressed in a wedding dress fitted with a bustier, she became a national sensation. She also caused parental and religious outrage, who thought her blatant displays of sexuality rather offensive. Like a Virgin demonstrated that Madonna wasn’t just a one album wonder. It took the number one spot on the album charts for three weeks straight. Seven million copies of the album were sold worldwide by May 1985. Her music video for “Material Girl,” inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” song routine from the movie Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, showed that Madonna could do the glamorous look as well just as good as any other celebrity.
Download or read book The Hacienda written by Peter Hook and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legendary musician Peter Hook tells the whole story - the fun, the music, the vast loss of money, the legacy - of Manchester's most iconic nightclub Peter Hook, as co-founder of Joy Division and New Order, has been shaping the course of popular music for thirty years. He provided the propulsive bass guitar melodies of 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' and the bestselling 12-inch single ever, 'Blue Monday' among many other songs. As co-owner of Manchester's Hacienda club, Hook propelled the rise of acid house in the late 1980s, then suffered through its violent fall in the 1990s as gangs, drugs, greed and a hostile police force destroyed everything he and his friends had created. This is his memory of that era and 'it's far sadder, funnier, scarier and stranger' than anyone has imagined. As young and naive musicians, the members of New Order were thrilled when their record label Factory opened a club. Yet as their career escalated, they toured the world and had top ten hits, their royalties were being ploughed into the Hacienda and they were only being paid £20 per week. Peter Hook looked back at that exciting and hilarious time to write HACIENDA. All the main characters appear - Tony Wilson, Barney, Shaun Ryder - and Hook tells it like it was - a rollercoaster of success, money, confusion and true faith.
Download or read book Last of a Breed written by Louis L'Amour and published by Kettler Verlag. This book was released on 2017-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: - Collects Schreiber's iconic Cowboy photography - A romanticized yet gripping depiction of archetypal masculinity and homoeroticism Our idea of what a cowboy looks like is shaped by many influences: Hollywood with its countless movies, American country music in all its variety, the famous Marlboro commercials and, of course, Brokeback Mountain. What all these images have in common is that they are mostly fictitious or at least removed from reality. Similarly, Martin Schreiber does not claim to depict reality in his photographs. His works mix romantic, idealized images of a pristine landscape with the toils of hard labor, and blend the smell of testosterone with a sultry homoeroticism. And yet his photographs are more truthful, closer to reality than many others. Of course, Schreiber took his pictures more than 30 years ago, long before the debate about male role models began to take hold. This is what makes them so appealing. For more than a year, Schreiber roamed the vast landscapes of Texas, camera in hand, visiting cattle farms and rodeo shows and portraying cowboys at work, in their leisure time, in the saddle and on the couch.
