Book The Life of the Madman of U

Download or read book The Life of the Madman of U written by David M. DiValerio and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Life of the Madman of Ü tells the story of Künga Zangpo (1458-1532), a famous Tibetan Buddhist ascetic of the Kagyü sect. Having grown weary of the trials of human existence, Künga Zangpo renounced the world during his teenage years, committing himself to learning and practicing the holy Dharma as a monk. Some years later he would give up his monkhood to take on a unique tantric asceticism that entailed dressing in human remains, wandering from place to place, and provoking others to attack him physically, among other norm-overturning behaviors. It was because of this asceticism that Künga Zangpo came to be known as the Madman of Ü. David M. Divalerio translates this biography, originally written in two parts in 1494 and 1537, making accessible to a modern audience a rich depiction of religious life in fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Tibet. The book also details Künga Zangpo's many miracles, a testament to the spiritual perfection he attained. His final thirty years were spent at his monastery of Tsimar Pel, where he dispensed teachings to his numerous disciples and followers. The Life of this remarkable and controversial figure, now available in English for the first time, provides new means for understanding the tradition of the "holy madman" (smyon pa) in Tibetan Buddhism.

Book A Madman s Will John Randolph Four Hundred Slaves and the Mirage of Freedom

Download or read book A Madman s Will John Randolph Four Hundred Slaves and the Mirage of Freedom written by Gregory May and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2023-04-11 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The untold saga of John Randolph’s 383 slaves, freed in his much-contested will of 1821, finally comes to light. Few legal cases in American history are as riveting as the controversy surrounding the will of Virginia Senator John Randolph (1773–1833), which—almost inexplicably—freed all 383 of his slaves in one of the largest and most publicized manumissions in American history. So famous is the case that Ta-Nehisi Coates has used it to condemn Randolph’s cousin, Thomas Jefferson, for failing to free his own slaves. With this groundbreaking investigation, historian Gregory May now reveals a more surprising story, showing how madness and scandal shaped John Randolph’s wildly shifting attitudes toward his slaves—and how endemic prejudice in the North ultimately deprived the freedmen of the land Randolph had promised them. Sweeping from the legal spectacle of the contested will through the freedmen’s dramatic flight and horrific reception in Ohio, A Madman’s Will is an extraordinary saga about the alluring promise of freedom and its tragic limitations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I’m sorry I startled you last evening,” he said. “I get confused. It’s worse at the end of the day.” “That’s all right,” I said. He was reacting to my words before they came out of my mouth, nodding affirmation. I decided to stick to simple declarative sentences for the moment. “Confused how? You see the future?” He shifted in his chair. “I experience the future.” That was different. “Whose future? You can predict? Like a prophet?” “All futures within my senses. I see them all at once, and I can’t stop it. Your words, my words, they echo forward. Everything happens and will happen and is happening.” On a nice quiet trip to the English countryside to cope with the likelihood that he has gone a little insane, Adam meets a man who definitely has. The madman’s name is John Corrigan, and he is convinced he’s going to die soon. He may be right. Because there’s trouble coming, and unless Adam can get his own head together in time, they may die together.

Book The Madman s Guide to Sarcastic Definitions

Download or read book The Madman s Guide to Sarcastic Definitions written by David Gudgeon and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you combat boredom? Write your own dictionary! And yes, it is as easy as it sounds, provided that you are a total smart ass or at least ten cents short of your personal dollar. Fortunately, the author just happens to be one, or the other, or both! Well, at least he has his moments. Really though, the creation of this book is more along the lines of a challenge. Having been told that he was so sarcastic that he could write a book about it, he decided to actually do it, and this book is the result. This book has been done in dictionary form for ease of subject, since sarcasm is not something that can necessarily be taught. It is more of a skill one develops for themselves. However, having a reference with a wisecrack for a multitude of different subjects at your disposal doesn't hurt, and therefore this book should be a good jumping off point for developing the skill. Always choose subjects that are not likely to get you into trouble, and keep in mind that you should use your best judgment all the same. Remember, this book has been written all in good fun.
