Though the first chapter takes place twenty-seven years ago, the remainder of the story occurs during the current time period. Madison Cavanaugh is the only child of a single mother, Rosemary. When Madison was just an infant, Rosemary traveled from New Mexico to North Carolina with Ray Davis, who was a long-distance truck driver. With no other family, Rosemary is overwhelmed by the generosity and warmth bestowed on them by the Davis family. She and Madison soon become a part of their family. Ray's younger sister, Debbie, is also a single mother raising a daughter named Megan. Rosemary and Debbie become close friends and their two little girls spend their childhood together. Now an ER nurse, Madison recognizes the blood-covered pendant on her critically injured patient as belonging to her mother. When Rosemary dies during surgery and the surgeon explains to Madison that the woman who raised her had never delivered a child, her life is shaken to the core. Madison is determined to find her true identity. Her first step is to travel from North Carolina to New Mexico to locate a priest whose name her mother struggled to say before she died. But the more Madison learns, the deeper and more dangerous her investigation becomes. Elaine LaForge lives in the Finger Lakes region of New York. She is the mother of four and the grandmother of five. Now retired, she has the time to write the novels she has always envisioned in her mind. Book excerpt: How did an angel enter Victor Wolfs life? The answer was simpleat the hockey rink when a little schoolteacher asked a favor of him: to bring her the head of a poisonous snake when he went snake hunting. She didnt look like an angel. The deep discolored circles under her eyes reminded the coach of a raccoon. She looked as though she hadnt had a good nights sleep in a while. The tough hockey coach didnt look much better. He also had circles that everyone said were from too much nightlife. They each had their dark secrets. Jr.s Angel intertwines the coach and the teacher as they reveal details of their pasts. The coach played a chess game with God for much of his life. As the game neared its end, the coach realized that God would always be the Winner. As though to make amends, God sent him the only woman Victor Wolf ever really loved. The file cabinet is nearly empty, although a few notes remain. Now I had begun to store my notes that covered twenty years of my life and adventures with my husband. As I filed some papers, I came across a book by one of Vics favorite authors, Ernest Hemingway. Hidden inside was a quote by Hemingway, Every mans life ends the same way. It is only the details of how he lived and how he died that distinguish one man from another. This folded scrap of paper held a clue to Vics philosophy. Vic loved Hemingway because the man wrote about how he had experienced life. Vic knew the best fiction had to be based upon reality and experience. Vics notes and writings revealed how he lived life. But his life held sorrow and disappointment, until he met the woman who introduced him to the concept of love. Vics story had left many unanswered questions. This book fills in the missing gaps of many characters. Jr.s Angel is a tribute to love, a word that a tough guy couldnt speak until he fell under the influence of a little schoolteacher who had been abused and put in a corner. She survived somehow. Once she met the tough guy, she flourished. The two found each other: warrior and angel. Unselfish love and dedication allowed each to thrive. He became her true love and hero; she became his angel on this earth.

Book Localizing Governance in India

Download or read book Localizing Governance in India written by Bidyut Chakrabarty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participatory governance has a long history in India and this book traces historical-intellectual trajectories of participatory governance and how older Western discourses have influenced Indian policymakers. While colonial rulers devolved power to accommodate dissenting voices, for independent India, participatory governance was a design for democratizing governance in its true sense. Participation also acted as a vehicle for localizing governance. The author draws on both Western and non-Western theoretical treatises and the book seeks to conceptualize localizing governance also as a contextual response. It also makes the argument that despite being located in different socio-economic and political milieu, thinkers converge to appreciate localizing governance as perhaps the only reliable means to democratize governance. The book aims to confirm this argument by reference to sets of evidence from the Indian experience of localizing governance. By attempting a genealogy of participatory governance in the West and in India, and an empirical study of participatory governance in India, the book sheds light on the exchange of ideas and concepts through space and time, thus adding to the growing body of literature in the social sciences on ‘conceptual flow’. It will be of interest to political scientists and historians, in particularly those studying South Asia.

Book Speech and Debate as Civic Education

Download or read book Speech and Debate as Civic Education written by J. Michael Hogan and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an era increasingly marked by polarized and unproductive political debates, this volume makes the case for a renewed emphasis on teaching speech and debate, both in and outside of the classroom. Speech and debate education leads students to better understand their First Amendment rights and the power of speaking. It teaches them to work together collaboratively to solve problems, and it encourages critical thinking, reasoned and fact-based argumentation, and respect for differing viewpoints in our increasingly diverse and global society. Highlighting the need for more emphasis on the ethics and skills of democratic deliberation, the contributors to this volume—leading scholars, teachers, and coaches in speech and debate programs around the country—offer new ideas for reinvigorating curricular and co-curricular speech and debate by recovering and reinventing their historical mission as civic education. Combining historical case studies, theoretical reflections, and reports on programs that utilize rhetorical pedagogies to educate for citizenship, Speech and Debate as Civic Education is a first-of-its-kind collection of the best ideas for reinventing and revitalizing the civic mission of speech and debate for a new generation of students. In addition to the editors, the contributors to this volume include Jenn Anderson, Michael D. Bartanen, Ann Crigler, Sara A. Mehltretter Drury, David A. Frank, G. Thomas Goodnight, Ronald Walter Greene, Taylor W. Hahn, Darrin Hicks, Edward A. Hinck, Jin Huang, Una Kimokeo-Goes, Rebecca A. Kuehl, Lorand Laskai, Tim Lewis, Robert S. Littlefield, Allan D. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of my poems were written because I was in the presence of angels. I would awaken in the middle of the night with a line of poetry in my head. I would then grab a pencil and pad and begin writing. The first time it happened I thought, Mmm, IaEUR(tm)ll jot that down tomorrow. When I awoke, I couldnaEUR(tm)t even remember the first word of the line much less anything else about it. After that happened, I got up and wrote all of what was on my mind. I would then fall back to sleep. Amazingly, in the morning I had very little need of corrections. Sometimes there were words that were unfamiliar to me. When I looked them up, they fit perfectly. This behavior continued through more than fifty poems. I also write when praying or observing a sunset I would have a line of poetry in my head which had to be recorded. Many times, on my way to work, I had to pull off the road to write down on a paper bag what I was thinking. This usually was when I was having a discussion with God. I have often said to friends when sharing my poetry, aEURoeI am only the messenger.aEUR My poems are messages to those who are suffering and suggestions on how to live a more fulfilling life. God is always available and will see you through any crisis. Trust Him for He loves us all.
