Book Mademoiselle Fifi and Other Stories

Download or read book Mademoiselle Fifi and Other Stories written by Guy de Maupassant and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1999 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Maupassant, existence is what happens to us between two events which we cannot avoid: birth and death. The space between is filled with a compulsory programme of rituals which merely pass the time. But mankind cannot bear too much truth, and we turn mating to Love, dignify war by calling it Patriotism, subscribe to morality, and generally delude ourselves that we are not animals acting upon instinct but rational creatures capable of idealistic beliefs and actions. We survive only on the drug of self-deception. Maupassant, whose disgust with creation was only equalled by his contempt for human hypocrisy, takes a scalpel to our illusions and cuts to the bone. He operates without anaesthetic and his tales are not for the squeamish. He would be unbearable to read if his clinical pessimism were not redeemed by a sense of the absurd and a warmer compassion for 'humanity bleeding'. Unsentimental but always honest, he persuades us that life is an incomprehensible, cosmic farce. This translation of twenty tales shows Maupassant at his bitter, bawdy, chilling best. It features some of his grimmest and most famous stories such as A Vendetta and The Grove of Olives, but it also reflects both his moods and his mastery of the short story. The Little Keg is rich in comic invention, while the disturbing Who Can Tell? draws its power from the strange forces which drove its author into madness.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mademoiselle Fifi: And Twelve Other Stories When he had read his letters and the German new papers, which his orderly had brought him, he got up, and after throwing three or four enormous pieces of green wood on the fire, for these gentlemen were gradu ally cutting down the park in order to keep themselves warm, he went to the window. The rain was descending in torrents, a regular Normandy rain, which looked as if it were being poured out by some furious person, a slanting rain, opaque as a curtain, which formed a kind of wall with diagonal stripes, and which deluged every thing, a rain such as one frequently experiences in the neighborhood of Rouen, which is the watering-pot of France. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant (1850 -1893) was a 19th-century French author, remembered as a master of the short story form, and as a representative of the Naturalist school. Maupassant was a protégé of Gustave Flaubert and his stories are characterized by economy of style and efficient, seemingly effortless dénouements (outcomes). Many are set during the Franco-Prussian War of the 1870s, describing the futility of war and the innocent civilians who, caught up in events beyond their control, are permanently changed by their experiences. He wrote 300 short stories, six novels, three travel books, and one volume of verse. His first published story, "Boule de Suif" ("The Dumpling", 1880), is often considered his masterpiece.

Book Butterball and Mademoiselle Fifi Translated and Illustrated

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My very first trade in publishing was translating American books for the French market, now, forty years later I have come full circle and translate for MS BookS Publishing all-time favorite French classics for the American -and world- market. Boule de Suif, a skillful philosophical blend of fact and fiction, appeared for the first time in Les Soires de Mdan, a selective collection of six short stories, published on April 15, 1880; and, in my humble opinion this is one of the greatest ever written. Checkov wrote some great ones too but Guy de Maupassant is acclaimed as the master of the short story form, one of the fathers of the modern short story, and this is his masterpiece. While Checkov started writing short stories for financial gains, Guy de Maupassant, greatly influenced by Voltaire, wrote his stories as statements against human dysfunction. As mentioned in my other MS BookS Publishing's forewords, I find too many translations disrespectful of the author's text. I particularly found ambiguous Victorian translations of these two short stories, where any mention of sex is summarily paraphrased, adulterated, or not translated at all. These stories were written for a sophisticated, mature audience! so why treat them as children stories? Victorian era translations are an abomination (any bodily functions often not mentioned; any text alluding to coitus, paraphrased; curse words adulterated into silly expressions); any serious novel translated during that period should be re-translated for the millennium. Why did I choose Butterball as the title? The dictionary defines butterball as any plump person: Short and plump. A real butterball! but that's on a par with pleasingly plump. [1940s+ --The simile as fat as a butterball dates back to the mid-1800s] Boule de Suif is a play on the word suif / tallow or the hard fatty substance of animal fat separated by melting it from the meat, and used to make candles, soap, and often used to make gravy! So not a bad thing, really! In America butterball has become a term to indicate quality and pleasantly plump; and that's exactly how Guy de Maupassant describes his heroine. In a Russian adaptation of the story, the title was written as Angel and Sinners. I like that title! It describes accurately the people of the story. Boule de Suif is a heroine in the tradition of Joan of Arc and others who sacrificed themselves to save people who, sadly enough, might not deserve to be saved. In Mademoiselle Fifi, why did I translate faisait la mine into redress of grievance? Though faire la mine means to pout in French, it could also mean making things explode as they do in the mining industry; I chose to translate it as redress of grievance (and is not a war just a redress of grievance against another country?) because in this story I use it as Mademoiselle Fifi's redress of grievance against his commandant who refuses to let him ring the church bell.Enjoy!
