Book Madame Bohemia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Madame Bohemia Classic Reprint written by Francis Neilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Madame Bohemia Battista Guarini's dive was a warm cellar near Bleeker Street, down a flight of eight narrow steps to swinging doors on the top step of a shorter flight; the doors, opening, showed a room which, though sixty feet long and thirty broad, was less than eight feet high; on each side were seven tables, and each table was flanked by four chairs. In the centre of the room stood a large stove, the pipe from which, suspended by wires, ran back half the length of the room to the kitchen chimney. Guarini said the ceiling was already black when he turned the cellar into a restaurant. Caricatures of political notorieties and of celebrated artists, and curious anatomical studies, were sketched by the aid of sticks and umbrellas on the ceiling, which in consequence had a reputation equal to that of Guarini's famous dinner. Twelve years ago, in New York, this was the favourite rendezvous of the hungry subjects of the Nine. Guarini said he was a descendant of the Italian poet who wrote "The Faithful Swain." No one doubted this, for Battista was worthy of any ancestor, poet or otherwise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Madame X: A Story of Motherlove A night lamp - the chosen companion of illness, misery and murder - burned dimly on a little table in the midst of a grim array of bottles and boxes. In a big armchair between the table and the bed, and within easy reach of both, sat a young man. It was his fourteenth night in that chair and he leaned his head back against the cushions in an attitude of utter exhaustion. The hands rested on the arms with the palms turned up. But the strong, clean-cut face - that for two weeks had been a mask of fear and suffering - was transfigured with joy and thanksgiving when he reached over every few minutes and touched the forehead of the little boy in the bed. There was moisture under the dark curls and the fever flush had given way to the pallor of weakness. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Madame De Treymes John durham, while he waited for Madame de Malrive to draw on her gloves, stood in the hotel doorway looking out across the Rue de Rivoli at the afternoon brightness of the Tuileries gardens. His European visits were infrequent enough to have kept unimpaired the fresh ness of his eye, and he was always struck anew by the vast and consummately ordered spectacle of Paris: by its look of having been boldly and deliberately planned as a background for the enjoyment of life, ih stead of being forced into grudging conces sions to the festive instincts, or barricading itself against them in unenlightened ugliness, like his own lamentable New York. Book Lessons from Madame Chic

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by Paris, this lighthearted and deceptively wise contemporary memoir serves as a guidebook for women on the path to adulthood, sophistication, and style, perfect for any woman looking to lead a more fulfilling, passionate, and artful life. Paris may be the City of Light, but for many it is also the City of Transformation. When Jennifer Scott arrived in Paris as an exchange student from California, she had little idea she would become an avid fan of French fashion, lifestyle, and sophistication. Used to a casual life back home, in Paris she was hosted by a woman she calls “Madame Chic,” mistress of a grand apartment in the Sixteenth Arrondissement. Madame Chic mentors Jennifer in the art of living, with elegance and an impeccably French less-is-more philosophy. Three-course meals prepared by the well-dressed Madame Chic (her neat clothes covered by an apron, of course) lure Jennifer from her usual habit of frequent snacks, junk food, sweatpants, and TV. Additional time spent with “Madame Bohemienne,” a charming single mother who passionately embraces Parisian joie de vivre, introduces readers to another facet of behind-closed-doors Parisian life. While Francophiles will appreciate this memoir of a young woman’s adventure abroad, others who may not know much about France will thrill to the surprisingly do-able (yet chic!) hair and makeup lessons, plus tips on how to create a capsule wardrobe with just ten useful core pieces. Each chapter of Lessons from Madame Chic reveals the valuable secrets Jennifer learned while under Madame Chic’s tutelage—tips you can master no matter where you live or the size of your budget. Embracing the classically French aesthetic of quality over quantity, aspiring Parisiennes will learn the art of eating (deprive yourself not; snacking is not chic), fashion (buy the best you can afford), grooming (le no-makeup look), among other tips. From entertaining to decor, you will gain insights on how to cultivate old-fashioned sophistication while living an active, modern life. Lessons from Madame Chic is the essential handbook for a woman that wants to look good, live well, and enjoy that Parisian je ne sais quoi in her own arrondissement.

Book Paris when It s Naked

Download or read book Paris when It s Naked written by Etel Adnan and published by Post Apollo Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fiction. Etel Adnan's novel "PARIS, WHEN IT'S NAKED amazes our retinas, ears, lips, fingertips, and noses with sensing, talking, and envisioning the city of Baudelaire and Delacroix, Mallarme and Picasso, Sartre and Djuna Barnes, Miller and Nin, Vietnamese and African refugees, revolutions and Bohemia. This tale of the Creative Now is told through the fine-tuned sensibility of Etel Adnan, the expatriate poet-painter who knows the French Capital as wholly as she does Beirut and San Francisco, her other homes. She is also the author of SITT MARIE-ROSE, an underground novel of the Lebanese Civil War, and many books of poetry. Her new work is a philosophically charged lyric in prose. The elan vital of every word evokes the eternal present of this wise woman. A highly personal, life-enhancing masterpiece in a deathly age of impersonality. An indespensable book by an indispensable writer" -Morgan Gibson.
