Book excerpt: Hawk Island stands in the middle of the Atlantic, small and defiant, like its people. Two Brooks is the most isolated village in Hawk Island, surrounded by high cliffs and flanked at each end by a brook. It is a village of tenacious people, hardened by isolation and punished by nature with crude winters and burning droughts. It is also a place forsaken by God and men that boasts a long history of civil disobedience and defiance of social norms. The village priest, Monsignor Inocente, is doing his best to keep his parishioners on a path of moral rectitude. Unfortunately, he is also fighting forces he cannot control. When three young men disappear, the villagers diligently search for a plausible explanation. While the villagers grapple with their seemingly justifiable fears, the monsignor asks for help from the mainland. But what no one knows is that his decision will set off a chain of events that will forever change life in Two Brooks. In this spiritual tale, a priest living in an island town plagued by dark secrets and strange occurrences must attempt to keep the peace among terrified villagers after three men mysteriously disappear.

Book This Is a Thriller

Download or read book This Is a Thriller written by Alan Warren and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-04-28 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late 1950s and early 1960s were the golden years of horror television. Anthology series such as Way Out and Great Ghost Tales, along with certain episodes of Twilight Zone and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, were among the shows that consistently frightened a generation of television viewers. And perhaps the best of them all was Thriller, hosted by Boris Karloff. In Thriller the horror was gothic, with a darker, bleaker vision of life than its contemporaries. The show's origins and troubled history is first discussed here, followed by biographies of such key figures as producer William Frye, executive producer Hubbell Robinson, writers Robert Bloch and Donald S. Sanford, and Karloff. The episode guide covers all 67 installments, providing airdate, production credits, cast, plot synopses and critical evaluations.

Book Women Crime and Forgiveness in Early Modern Portugal

Download or read book Women Crime and Forgiveness in Early Modern Portugal written by Darlene Abreu-Ferreira and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking at the experiences of women in early modern Portugal in the context of crime and forgiveness, this study demonstrates the extent to which judicial and quasi-judicial records can be used to examine the implications of crime in women’s lives, whether as victims or culprits. The foundational basis for this study is two sets of manuscript sources that highlight two distinct yet connected experiences of women as participants in the criminal process. One consists of a collection of archival documents from the first half of the seventeenth century, a corpus called 'querelas,' in which formal accusations of criminal acts were registered. This is a rich source of information not only about the types of crimes reported, but also the process that plaintiffs had to follow to deal with their cases. The second primary source consists of a sampling of documents known as the ’perdão de parte.’ The term refers to the victim’s pardon, unique to the Iberian Peninsula, which allowed individuals implicated in serious conflicts to have a voice in the judicial process. By looking at a sample of these pardons, found in notary collections from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Abreu-Ferreira is able to show the extent to which women exercised their agency in a legal process that was otherwise male-dominated.
