This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of poems, Frances Donovan presents a charged portrait of a woman of erotic complexity - the multiple attractions, the demands, the fantasies. "...you go with him down to the water's edge / and slide in and swim / and grab those lanky limbs of his and pull." Passion, anger, lust, envy, defiance, and cherishing can be found in these poems that widen from the personal to encompass myth. Sappho is there, as is Juno who looked after the women of Rome, and Diana, goddess of the hunt. There is hunting for love, there is basking in love, there is longing: "I wish I could send you/the bright blue sky of my body / cut loose from its moorings - / not the snake skin or the snake / but the buzzing within me/that has no name." It's sumptuous to plunge into these poems, most of which occur at the shore. -Grey Held, author of Two Star General and Spilled Milk The border-world of Frances Donovan's chapbook is sensually extravagant, lush with detail. Every seashore, highway, and body has its own messages to impart: "the buzz of the road," "the tiny singing in the trees," "the touch of your foot / makes me a beehive." Donovan's translation of these uncanny communiqués often reminds me of early H.D. Perhaps it's the locations, such as the "island of golden pears / I could not choose from, / and so lost them all." Or maybe it's Donovan's liminal condition of being attracted to many kinds of beauty. In any case, these poems are floral and gritty, Hellenistic and mundane, in unlikely but appealing proportions. -Lesley Wheeler, author of Radioland

Book excerpt: Perfect for fans of Jenn McKinlay and Ellery Adams, Scarlett Gardner’s dream was to open a bookshop in Southern California, but it soon becomes a nightmare when she finds the dead body of a customer—and becomes the prime suspect. Southern California is where dreams come true—or so Scarlett Gardner thought. When she moved there and opened the Palm Trees and Page Turners bookshop, she thought her boyfriend and business partner would be part of the story. When he leaves her for a better job, Scarlett finds herself struggling to keep her new business afloat. That’s not the only thing she has to worry about—she discovers something underneath the pier by her bookshop that she didn’t outline for her life’s story: the dead body of a book-buying customer. After Scarlett gives a statement to the police, she thinks her life can go back to business as usual. But when a lawyer, representing someone named Lorelai Knight, tells Scarlett that she now stands to inherit a small fortune, she’s left with more questions than answers. Before she can make sense of any of it, the police bring her in for questioning; the body she found was Lorelai Knight. And the evidence they have against Scarlett doesn’t look good. Business is booming as Scarlett returns to Palm Trees and Page Turners, but for all the wrong reasons – curious tourists don’t want books, they want a glimpse of the Bookshop Killer. Who could really be behind all of this? And why frame Scarlett? To clear her name, she’s going to have get creative—and hope she can remain one page ahead of the killer.

Book John Steinbeck

Download or read book John Steinbeck written by Linda Wagner-Martin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to both describe and analyze the way Steinbeck learned the writing craft. It begins with his immersion in the short story, some years after he stopped attending Stanford University. Aside from a weak first novel, his professional writing career began with the publication in 1932 of The Pastures of Heaven, stories set in the Salinas Valley and dedicated to his parents. From that book he wrote truly commanding stories such as The Red Pony. Intermixed with Steinbeck’s journalism about California’s labor difficulties, his writing skill led to his 1930 masterpieces, Of Mice and Men, In Dubious Battle, and The Grapes of Wrath. The latter novel, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940, led eventually to his being awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962. He continued producing such wide-ranging works as The Pearl, East of Eden, The Winter of Our Discontent, and Travels with Charley up to just a few months before his death in 1968.

Book excerpt: In the space between no longer and not yet, you still belong somewhere. It catches most of us by surprise. Life is going along until suddenly we find ourselves at the crossroads of what was and what is yet to be. This in-between space of transition often keeps us awake at night, asking questions like What am I supposed to do now? and Why do I feel so lost and alone? If a new direction doesn't come, it can feel like you're stuck in a cycle of purposeless days. Bestselling author and Bible teacher Nicki Koziarz asked those same questions. Changes were coming in multiple areas of her life, and she struggled to navigate through them. But Nicki discovered how to find direction for today by understanding the types of seasons a transition can bring. In Your New Now, readers will study Moses's life through the perspective of four transition seasons he experienced: development, separation, cultivation, and finished. With practical advice, relatable stories, and biblical wisdom, this book will help you: ● Discern which transition season you're in and learn how to overcome its challenges ● Stop feeling lost in life by discovering where you belong on the road between what was and what will be ● Protect your future by learning to utilize Scripture to fight fears of the unknown Transitions start with something ending, and waiting for a new beginning can be agonizing. But you can learn to be confident and optimistic, even when life feels like it's paused in an unfamiliar now.

Book excerpt: In 1996, Tom Bissell went to Uzbekistan as a na•ve Peace Corps volunteer. Though he lasted only a few months before illness and personal crisis forced him home, Bissell found himself entranced by this remote land. Five years later he returned to explore the shrinking Aral Sea, destroyed by Soviet irrigation policies. Joining up with an exuberant translator named Rustam, Bissell slips more than once through the clutches of the Uzbek police as he makes his often wild way to the devastated sea. In Chasing the Sea, Bissell combines the story of his travels with a beguiling chronicle of Uzbekistan’s striking culture and long history of violent subjugation by despots from Jenghiz Khan to Joseph Stalin. Alternately amusing and sobering, this is a gripping portrait of a fascinating place, and the debut of a singularly gifted young writer.

Book The Singing Tradition of Child s Popular Ballads Abridgement

Download or read book The Singing Tradition of Child s Popular Ballads Abridgement written by Bertrand Harris Bronson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francis James Child's English and Scottish Popular Ballads, published in ten parts from 1882 to 1898, contained the texts and variants of 305 extant themes written down between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries. Unsurpassed in its presentation of texts, this exhaustive collection devoted little attention to the ballad music, a want that was filled by Bertrand Harris Bronson in his four volume Traditional Tunes of the Child Ballads. The present book is an abridged, one-volume edition of that work, setting forth music and text for proven examples of oral tradition, with a new comprehensive introduction. Its convenient format makes readily available to students and scholars the materials for a study of the Child ballads as they have been preserved in the British-American singing tradition. Originally published in 1977. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
