Book High Frequency Behavior of Long and Small Junctions

Download or read book High Frequency Behavior of Long and Small Junctions written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research consisted of studies of the fundamentals and applications of long Josephson Junctions and very small junctions, all fabricated out of NbN. We have developed technology for fabricating by reactive sputtering high quality long Josephson junctions with current densities of 100- 1,000 A/sq cm Such junctions were used for studies of giant steps on the I-V curve caused by fluxon pinning and of macroscopic quantum tunneling down to 15 mK. A new system, a long Josephson junction biased at Fiske steps, is presented for studies of Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling. Our results show applications of fluxons in long Josephson junctions for Fluxon Oscillator, Voltage Standard, and for observing Macroscopic Coherent Tunneling. We, have also studied very small NbN junctions fabricated with a STM where single electron tunneling is observed. We were the first to present such tunneling at room temperature; this is important for applications. Students and postdoctoral fellows were involved in this research.

Book Quantum Tunneling of Josephson Vortices in High Impedance Long Junctions

Download or read book Quantum Tunneling of Josephson Vortices in High Impedance Long Junctions written by Wildermuth, Matthias Micha and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last decades, superconducting devices have emerged as a promising platform for quantum technologies, including quantum sensing and quantum computing. Their key elements are Josephson junctions, which allow for coherent supercurrent tunneling between two weakly linked superconductors. If such a junction is extended in one direction to a long junction, the superconducting phase difference can vary in space and time and may allow for quantized phase windings that drive supercurrent vortices.

Book Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization QTM 94

Download or read book Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization QTM 94 written by Leon Gunther and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first NATO Advanced Workshop on Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization (QTM) was organized and co-directed by Bernard Barbara, Leon Gunther, Nicolas Garcia, and Anthony Leggett and was held from June, 27 through July 1, 1994 in Grenoble and Chichilianne, France. These Proceedings include twenty-nine articles that represent the contributions of the participants in the Workshop. Quantum Tunneling of Magnetization is not only interesting for purely academic reasons. It was pointed out in the review article by L. Gunther in the December, 1990 issue of Physics World, that QTM may be destined to play a significant role within the next two decades in limiting the density of information storage in magnetic systems. Recent advances have indicated that this limitation may well be reached even earlier than first predicted. Furthermore, the number of people who have entered the field of study of QTM during these past few years has increased many fi)ld. The time was therefore opportune to hold a Workshop to bring together for the first time the leading researchers of QTM, both theoretical and experimental, so as to discuss the current status of the field. The most controversial issue at the time of the Workshop was how to establish r.eliable criteria for determining whether experimental results do indeed reveal manifestations of QTM. We believe that much progress was made at the Workshop on this issue.

Book Quantum Computing in Solid State Systems

Download or read book Quantum Computing in Solid State Systems written by Berardo Ruggiero and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-30 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Computation in Solid State Systems discusses experimental implementation of quantum computing for information processing devices; in particular observations of quantum behavior in several solid state systems are presented. The complementary theoretical contributions provide models of minimizing decoherence in the different systems. Most recent theoretical and experimental results on macroscopic quantum coherence of mesoscopic systems, as well as the realization of solid-state qubits and quantum gates are discussed. Particular attention is given to coherence effects in Josephson devices. Other solid state systems---including quantum dots, optical, ion, and spin devices---are also discussed.

Book Materials for Sustainable Energy

Download or read book Materials for Sustainable Energy written by Vincent Dusastre and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for cleaner, cheaper, smaller and more efficient energy technologies has to a large extent been motivated by the development of new materials. The aim of this collection of articles is therefore to focus on what materials-based solutions can offer and show how the rationale design and improvement of their physical and chemical properties can lead to energy-production alternatives that have the potential to compete with existing technologies. In terms of alternative means to generate electricity that utilize renewable energy sources, the most dramatic breakthroughs for both mobile (i.e., transportation) and stationary applications are taking place in the fields of solar and fuel cells. And from an energy-storage perspective, exciting developments can be seen emerging from the fields of rechargeable batteries and hydrogen storage.

Book Partially Integrable Evolution Equations in Physics

Download or read book Partially Integrable Evolution Equations in Physics written by R. Conte and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the many physical phenomena ruled by partial differential equations, two extreme fields are currently overcrowded due to recent considerable developments: 1) the field of completely integrable equations, whose recent advances are the inverse spectral transform, the recursion operator, underlying Hamiltonian structures, Lax pairs, etc 2) the field of dynamical systems, often built as models of observed physical phenomena: turbulence, intermittency, Poincare sections, transition to chaos, etc. In between there is a very large region where systems are neither integrable nor nonintegrable, but partially integrable, and people working in the latter domain often know methods from either 1) or 2). Due to the growing interest in partially integrable systems, we decided to organize a meeting for physicists active or about to undertake research in this field, and we thought that an appropriate form would be a school. Indeed, some of the above mentioned methods are often adaptable outside their original domain and therefore worth to be taught in an interdisciplinary school. One of the main concerns was to keep a correct balance between physics and mathematics, and this is reflected in the list of courses.
