Book International Policy Coordination and Exchange Rate Fluctuations

Download or read book International Policy Coordination and Exchange Rate Fluctuations written by William H. Branson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the five largest industrial democracies concluded the Plaza Agreement in 1985, the theory and practice of international economic policy coordination has become the subject of spirited academic and public-policy debate. While some view policy coordination as crucial for the construction of an improved international monetary system, others fear that it risks delaying or weakening the implementation of macroeconomic and structural policies. In these papers and comments, prominent international economists consider past and present interpretations of the meaning of international policy coordination; conditions necessary for coordination to be beneficial both to the direct participants and the global economy; influential factors for the quantitative impact of coordination; obstacles to coordination; the most—and least—effective methods of coordination; and future directions of the coordination process, including processes associated with greater fixity of exchange rates. These studies will be readily accessible to policymakers, while offering sophisticated analyses to interested scholars of the global economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the progression towards the formation of European Monetary Union (EMU) there still exists considerable disagreement between economists about the relative merits of the current European Monetary System (EMS), EMU and a return to independent policy under floating exchange rates. This book is designed to contribute to this debate on monetary union in Europe by using large scale macroeconomic models of the world economy, including the OECD interlink model and the widely used NiGEM model, to evaluate the EMU, the EMS and the floating exchange rate policies. Various modelling groups address the issues facing Europe and the implications for policy analysis. The objective of the book is to show that the path to monetary uni

Book Policy Coordination in the European Monetary System

Download or read book Policy Coordination in the European Monetary System written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1988-09-15 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter discusses various aspects of policy coordination in the European Monetary System (EMS). The purpose of the first paper in this chapter is to provide a survey of the process of European monetary integration, with focus on the EMS, its purposes, evolution, and the experience gathered since its establishment in early 1979. In its present stage of evolution, the EMS has developed a body of general institutional procedures to promote consistency among the policies and objectives of participating countries. The search for consistency inevitably gives rise to consequent constraints, such as those implicit in the specific rules on exchange rate and international reserve management that characterize the exchange rate mechanism (ERM). By drawing on an analysis of the role of monetary policy in balance of payments adjustment under different monetary systems and exchange rate arrangements, the second paper focuses on the crucial issues involved when an attempt is made to set rules for monetary policy coordination in a system of fixed but adjustable exchange rates such as the EMS.

Book Economic Policy Exchange Rates and the International System

Download or read book Economic Policy Exchange Rates and the International System written by Warner Max Corden and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 1994 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an outstanding account of exchange rates inthe international monetary system, W. Max Corden considers the essential issues in international macroeconomics. The author takes as his model the macroeconomic situation of a country with an open economy, and explains the effects of domestic fiscal and monetary macroeconomic policy on exchange rates. He clearly analyses the choices faced by governments attempting to manage both the domestic inflation rateand the external exchange rate and current account balance. Professor Corden then discusses the European Exchange Rate mechanism, and provides a sceptical analysis of the possibilities for monetary union in Europe, and for international policy coordination in general. He gives equal weight todiscussion of the present US-centred international monetary system outside the ERM, and combines theoretical models with an account of the actual determination of floating exchange rates. Although the book itself is orientated towards monetary rather than trade issues, the author discusses twotopical issues: the role of protectionist policies, and the idea of competitiveness. Finally, he looks at the future of the international monetary system and the series of current reform proposals.Students will find this book useful because the author covers essential issues lucidly and authoritatively. The exposition is entirely non-mathematical. Postgraduate students and academics will be interested since Corden is a distinguished writer on international trade and policy, and hisarguments are powerfully presented.New to this edition:This is a revised and expanded edition of a previous book by Corden, Inflation, Exchange Rates and the World Economy, the third edition of which was published in 1985. In this new book, Professor Corden has fully rewritten the text, but retains the discursive, informal, reader-friendly style ofthe earlier editions. In this new edition, Professor Corden has included two new chapters which extend the treatment of macroeconomic policy, separating it into its fiscal and monetary branches. He also includes a new chapter on the role of the current account balance in determining macroeconomicpolicy. The author has brought his account of the present international monetary context up to date - characterised as the non-system - and has included a new analysis of European monetary issues, incorporating a review of the progress of the EMS towards full monetary union. The book also containsa provocative discussion of two highly topical issues: trade protection, and competitiveness, including both new theoretical analysis and such events as the recent GATT agreement.

Book Functioning of the International Monetary System

This book was released on 1996-04-24 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fiftieth anniversary of the Bretton Woods Conference served as an opportunity to reappraise the desirability of strengthening the IMF's oversight of the functioning of the international monetary system. Whatever the design of an exchange rate system and the arrangements for the provision of international liquidity, it is widely accepted that to be effective such oversight must rest on a strong analytic foundation. These two volumes, edited by Jacob A. Frenkel and Morris Goldstein, present 30 analytic papers on the system as it functioned during 1987-91 and aim at conveying the flavor of those issues that commanded close attention in the Fund's research program.

Book Economic Policy Exchange Rates and the International System

Download or read book Economic Policy Exchange Rates and the International System written by W. Max Corden and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1995-03-15 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ambitious successor to W. Max Corden's highly acclaimed Inflation, Exchange Rates, and the World Economy, this book addresses topics in international macroeconomics that have come to the forefront of economic policy debates in recent years. Covering exchange rate policy, the European Monetary System, protection and competition, and the international "non-system" since the collapse of Bretton Woods, Corden provides a probing analysis of significant economic trends associated with the increasing integration of the world capital market. Beginning with essays on exchange rate policy, the current account, and external effects of fiscal policy, Corden lays out the foundations of balance-of-payments theory in relation to wage rates, income distribution, and inflation. Chapters on the European Monetary System focus on monetary integration and look skeptically at European proposals to move toward monetary union. Other topical essays discuss the "competitiveness" problem and the relation between protection and macroeconomic policy. Corden summarizes and clarifies a vast range of work on the coordination of macroeconomic policies and critically reviews various proposals for reforming the international monetary system.

Book Macroeconomic Policy in Open Economies

Download or read book Macroeconomic Policy in Open Economies written by Michelle Fratianni and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1997-05-28 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the international dimension of macroeconomic policy, this handbook covers the main areas of modern macroeconomic policy in open economies. The emphasis is on policy applications rather than the development of economic theory. There are three basic goals: (1) an understanding of how economic theories affect actual policy making, (2) a description of the institutional and conceptual development of the international economy, and (3) an explanation of the way policy-making institutions deal with the so-called international economy. The handbook consists of an introductory chapter and four parts. The first treats macroeconomic policy-making from the home country versus the rest of the world perspective. The second part stresses policies among interacting and reacting countries. The third part considers the development of world capital markets and the international monetary system as important parts of the policy environment. The final part details macroeconomic policies in the G7 and Latin American countries.

Book International Monetary System

Download or read book International Monetary System written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1988-05-27 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper addresses several fundamental issues raised by recent developments in the world economy and considers their implications for the design and functioning of the international monetary system. We do not make any proposals. The four issues examined in the paper are: (1) Can the exchange rate regime do much to discipline fiscal policy?; (2) What are the extent and costs of reduced monetary independence under greater fixity of exchange rates?; (3) How can the equilibrium exchange rate best be determined?; and (4) Does a well functioning international monetary system require a clearly defined set of rules, an acknowledged leader, and an explicit anchor?
