Book Extrusion of Refractory Metals and Superalloys

Download or read book Extrusion of Refractory Metals and Superalloys written by D. R. Carnahan and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three inch diameter billets of TZM plus 1.5% Cb Molybdenum, alloy tungsten alloys, superalloys (B-1900, 713-C, U-700 and Rene 41), Inconel X were extruded on an instrumented 700 Ton Experimental Extrusion Press to establish a relationship among extrusion pressures, billet material properties, and processing parameters. The following relationship was established: P equals AY plus bY 1n R plus S (cot alpha) 1n R plus 4 k L/D where P is total extrusion pressure, a and b are constants for each die angle, Y is material flow strength at temperature and strain rate of processing, R is reduction ratio, alpha is extrusion die half angle, L is billet length in container, D is container diameter, and S and k are interface shear strength in die and liner respectively. Thread and gear cutting, and broaching processes are included along with semi-automatic, automatic, NC and CNC machine tools, operations, tooling, mechanisms, accessories, jigs and fixtures, and machine tool dynamometry are discussed. Non-Traditional and Advanced Machining Technologies covers the technologies, machine tools, and operations of non-traditional mechanical, chemical and thermal machining processes. Assisted machining technologies, machining of difficult-to-cut materials, design for machining, accuracy and surface integrity of machined parts, environment-friendly machine tools and operations, and hexapods are also presented. The topics covered throughout this volume reflect the rapid and significant advances that have occurred in various areas in machining technologies.

Book Surface Damage in Machined Beryllium

Download or read book Surface Damage in Machined Beryllium written by Stanley W. Porembka and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of machining damage effects in beryllium was made. Surface damage is caused by twinning and microcracking as a result of various machining operations. Twinning is a result of surface working while microcracks initiate at intersections of twins and grain boundaries, at twin-matrix interfaces, at impurity particles, and in heavily twinned regions. These phenomena may be due to residual stresses in wrought products as well as machining parameters such as tool type, feed, and speed and depth of cut. The loss of mechanical properties due to machining damage is reviewed. Also presented is a study of surface damage actually encountered with machining of the shingles for the Gemini spacecraft.
