Download or read book Machines and Tools Employed in the Working of Sheet Metals Classic Reprint written by Richard Broom Hodgson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machines and Tools Employed in the Working of Sheet Metals For some years past the author has experienced a constantly recurring need of a practical treatise on this important class of machine tools, as well as of the processes used in the working of sheet metal, and has found that English writers on mechanical subjects appear to have generally neglected this branch Of engineering. It is true that in describing certain processes incidental references are made to some special form of press devised by them, yet there does not appear to be any treatise dealing with the subject in a systematic manner. American writers also have apparently neglected this subject, save as a subsidiary section Of a work dealing with other branches of mechanical engineering, and then only in books which are published at a price which is generally prohibitive to the ordinary mechanic or student, whose means are limited. Oxy-acetylene Welding and Cutting, electric'welding, Hand Forging and Welding, and other information that does not directly deal with sheet metal work and pattern drafting, but includes subjects intimately connected With sheet metal working practice. These subjects are having exten sive introduction in the modern sheet metal shop. Schools teaching sheet metal working as an industrial art should therefore m the preparation of their courses, arrange for lectures that Will convey to the mind of the student that there are other methods for joining together sheet metals besides riveting and soldering. Any one school term does not permit extensive practice of these processes, but the student should know; something about them, to qualify him for a place abreast of his fell'ow-work men on establishing himself in the industrial shop. If the time for lectures on these subjects is not afiorded, it can be suggested that the student read up on the same. Book Shop Problems in Sheet Metal for Secondary Schools

Download or read book Shop Problems in Sheet Metal for Secondary Schools written by Eugene Clayton Graham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shop Problems in Sheet Metal for Secondary Schools: With Notes on Equipment, Materials and Shop Methods As an introduction to this little collection of notes and drawings the author wishes to call the attention of High School boys especially to the fact that this trade has not received the attention it deserves from the schools. In recent years several vocations such as printing, concrete construction, automobile repair and electrical work have found a place in the schools while others seem to be losing ground. It seems to be true that trades such as blacksmithing and molding which have been influenced by the introduction of new machinery which is more or less automatic, have become less attractive to boys. Sheet metal work as a vocation has many attractive features. Lt is a large and growing industry represented both in the building trades and in modern automobile construction, furniture and boat building and in the construction of manufactured articles. The introduction of autogenous welding and electric welding has done much to make possible the use of sheet metal in new forms. Mechanical development signifies the taking of an idea in the rough, in the crude form, for example, in which it comes from the inventor, working it out in detail, and refining and fixing it in shape by the designing process. Ideas in this way may become commercially practicable designs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sheet Metal Technology

Download or read book Sheet Metal Technology written by David J. Gingery and published by David J. Gingery Publishing, LLC. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sheet Metal Technology is written in Dave’s unique style with the beginner or vocational student in mind as he demonstrates how a product idea is conceived, developed and then produced by a single craftsman with basic tools. Subjects covered are safety in the shop, use of tools, layout and pattern development, various ways of forming and joining metal along with edging methods, corner systems and panel reinforcement. You will be introduced to the basic sheet metal shop where you will learn about various methods of forming sheet metal and in some instances even constructing your own tools including a rather unique and functional 24" sheet metal brake constructed of hardwood. The final chapter opens with a mass production operation set up to demonstrate the efficiency and economy of modern industrial technology. Then further projects are progressively introduced as skill is acquired. Such projects as a dustpan for the shop, a handy tool tote tray as well as plans for single and double hinge tool boxes. By this time you are an advanced student and ready to construct the unique portable charcoal grill and the impressive three drawer tool chest from the plans provided. Dave Gingery brings it all within your grasp and you will be amazed at what can be produced with tin snips, standard measuring tools and a 24" sheet metal brake.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dies: Their Construction and Use for the Modern Working of Sheet Metals The use of the power press for the cheap production of sheet metal parts (both large and small) has progressed in a truly wonderful manner during the last few years, and, by the adoption and use of suitable dies and fixtures, this modern machine tool has demonstrated its efficiency for turning out work formerly (and even now in a large number of shops) produced by the milling machine, the shaper, the drill press and the forge. Especially is this so where the parts required are of flat soft steel or iron; and in not only one line of machine manufacturing has the power press been used in this manner, but in every line. The management of the manufacturing establishments in which the power press has been adopted for the production of parts as referred to above, understand and appreciate the full value of dies; and in such shops they and the machines in which they are used have become as great factors in production as any of the other tools in general use. The rapidity with which the use and adaptation of dies and press fixtures are becoming understood, the endless variety of articles which they turn out, and the great numbers of mechanics who are in various ways engaged in devising and constructing such tools, have suggested to the author that a practical, comprehensive treatise on this subject would be of value and interest to all persons who might be in any way interested in modern sheet-metal working. In writing this book the author has done so with the purpose of giving to practical men a book which would treat these preeminent factors in modern manufacturing - Dies - as they should be treated; and that is, from the viewpoint of a practical man. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Practical Metal-Worker's Assistant With the Application of the Art of Electrometallurgy to Manufacturing Proceses This work is designed to keep pace with the mechanical arts in this country, although they are in a rapid state Of progression, and' fast approaching to perfection. Any mechanic, previously unac quainted with subjects treated Of in this work, may, by following its pages as a text-book, succeed in his earliest attempts to accomplish even the most difficult processes described; hence the descriptions and directions - are of the most practical nature. Metallic materials are submitted to the greatest variety of pro cesses, which mainly depend on their properties of fusibility, mal leability, and ductility; consequently the formation and quali ties of alloys are considered, as also the arts of founding and soldering; those of forging works In Iron and steel which are com paratively thick, and the nearly analogous treatment of thin works, or those in sheet metals; puddling, drawing tubes and wires, casting drop-shot, hardening and tempering, and a variety of correlative in formation is also Ofi'ered, for the particulars of which the reader is referred to the table of contents. The general principles upon which cutting tools are formed are explained. Although the prin ciples are few and simple, the forms and proportions of cutting tools are extensively modified, to adapt them to the different materials, to the various shapes to be produced, and to the convenience Of the Opera tor, Or Of the machine in which they are fixed. The remarks on the tools will inevitably be somewhat commingled with the account of their particular use, and the consideration of the machines with which they are allied, for it is difficult to' say where the appellation tool ends, and where that of machine or engine. Begins. All sorts of metal workers' tools are treated Of - planes, geer cutting tools, turn ing tools, boring tools, screw-cutting tools, shears, punches, and so ou-the various subdivisions of which are particularized in the table of contents.
