Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback! Music for More than One Piano An Annotated Guide Maurice Hinson When one piano is simply not enough. "Maurice Hinson's [Music for More than One Piano] ought not only to stand in the bookshelf for reference, but as a true dictionary in the best sense, it should mainly be read for pleasure and enlightenment." -- Konrad Wolff In an alphabetic listing by composer, this guide describes works for two or more keyboard instruments composed mainly since 1700. The range of combinations is considerable: works for two, three, four, or more pianos; for two or more pianos with other instruments, voice, or tape; for piano and harpsichord; for two player pianos; and for two pianos tuned a quarter-tone apart. There are compositions to be performed on two pianos by one, two, three, and four players, as well as one work for two players, two left hands. Maurice Hinson's remarks about the style, the performance problems, and the history of specific pieces are, as ever, insightful and delightful. A treasure map for teachers, students, and performers! Maurice Hinson, Senior Professor Emeritus of Piano at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, was founding editor of the Journal of the American Liszt Society and is a contributor to the New Grove Dictionary of American Music. He is known for his many articles, videos, and lecture recitals, especially those on early American piano music. He is author of several books on piano literature, including the indispensable Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire, 3rd edition (Indiana University Press). Book A Dictionary of Music Titles

Download or read book A Dictionary of Music Titles written by Adrian Room and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title of a great musical composition is not always a clear or simple matter. An allusive title, particularly in a foreign language, or a title that does not seem related to the work, can confuse even the most devoted music lover. Here are histories of the creation of 3,500 titles for symphonies, operas, oratorios, ballets, orchestral works, choral works, chamber music, keyboard compositions, and songs, ranging from the popular to the obscure. Each entry (arranged by English, French, German, Italian or Spanish title) includes alternate titles where appropriate, the composer's name, date of composition and first performance, opus number where appropriate, a description of the work, and the origin of the title or any story behind it. A bibliography and an index conclude the work.

Book Ravel the Decadent

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael J. Puri
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2012-01-23
  • ISBN : 0199876010
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book Ravel the Decadent written by Michael J. Puri and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-23 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The music of Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), beloved by musicians and audiences since its debut, has been a difficult topic for scholars. The traditional stylistic categories of impressionism, symbolism, and neoclassicism, while relevant, have offered too little purchase on this fascinating but enigmatic work. In Ravel the Decadent, author Michael Puri provides an innovative and productive solution by locating the aesthetic origins of this music in the French Decadence and demonstrating the extension of this influence across the length of his oeuvre. From an array of Decadent topics Puri selects three--memory, sublimation, and desire--and uses them to delineate the content of this music, pinpoint its overlap with contemporary cultural discourse, and link it to its biographical context, as well as to create new methods altogether for the analysis and interpretation of music. Ravel the Decadent opens by defining the main concepts, giving particular attention to memory and decadence. It then stakes out contrasting modes of memory in this music: a nostalgic mode that views the past as forever lost, and a more optimistic one that imagines its resurrection and reanimation. Acknowledging Ravel's lifelong identity as a dandy--a figure that embodies the Decadence and its aspiration toward the sublime--Puri identifies possible moments of musical self-portraiture before stepping back to theorize dandyism in European musical modernism at large. He then addresses the dialectic between desire and its sublimation in the pairing of two genres--the bacchanal and the idyl--and leverages the central trio of concepts to offer provocative readings of Ravel's two waltz sets, the Valses nobles et sentimentales and La valse. Puri concludes by invoking the same terms to identify a topic of "faun music" that promises to create new common ground between Ravel and Debussy. Rife with close readings that will satisfy the musicologist, Ravel the Decadent also suits a more general reader through its broadly humanistic key concepts, immersion in contemporary art and literature, and clarity of language.
