In a remote cabin in the forest, Ralph Folsom, once a brilliant Shakespearean scholar but now the last remaining Tory in High Tide, ekes out a bitter impoverished existence. Hideously scarred by an act of vigilante justice and mentally scarred by the betrayal of his wife, nothing is left to him but his hatred and no one gets a bigger dose of it than aristocrat and patriot Capt. Aaron Collins, who was born to everything Ralph wanted. Aarons got problems of his own. Stripped of his tenant lands following the war, saddled with a huge debt, and still reeling from the loss of the old fl ame who chose to marry Ralph Folsom instead, Aaron is too intent on the day-to-day struggles to notice that his enemy is sliding into madness and threatening to drag him down with him. It is the summer of 1787, but old sins bite deep, and the events now driving Ralph over the edge go back ten years, twenty years, and even before he and Aaron were born.

Book Yankee Family

    Book Details:
  • Author : James McGovern
  • Publisher : Routledge

  • Pages : 191 pages

Download or read book Yankee Family written by James McGovern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-29 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The voluminous records of the Pierce and Poor families weave a story that runs from the late eighteenth century until World War I. The extent and qual-ity of their source materials, and their positions as representative middle-class to upper-middle-class New England families, make these subjects of Yankee Family particularly well suited for analyzing processes of continuity and change. McGovern reviews the life-styles of the Pierce and,Poor families both on the frontier and in the Boston area, and focuses on the cross-generational changes in these styles. The study begins with John Pierce at Harvard in the 1790s and follows through to the first decade of the twen-tieth century. The author shows how the "Yankee" mentality, an outgrowth of New England Puritanism, contributed to the family's rise to success, but con-cludes that by the early twentieth cen-tury the Yankee life-style was ending, a victim of social and economic changes in American society that were rendering it irrelevant. Until recently historical scholarship on the American family has been static. Apart from long-standing predilections of historians for political history, there were also theoretical and meth-odological problems deterring schol-arship on the American family. But McGovern's approach holds great promise; it is more sensitive than quan-tification studies to the impact of change on a wider range of human expe-riences because it is inevitably more personal. While this type of family his-tory rewards students of social change, it also affords important insights on con-tinuity. It reveals the existence of a family style which adapts to change with a special corpus of family wisdom, al-ways finding a way to exercise its "known" amidst constant flux thus mitigating some of the effects of change.

Book Ma am

Download or read book Ma am written by Lue Wyatt and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ma'am is a story of an older woman who has lived a life of hard labor. She was a woman that not only worked hard, she also loved as well. Raised in poverty, married young with children did the only thing she knew, worked. Later in life, due to curcumstances that has happened to so many women, adopted five grandchildren. Later she discovered to her dismay, that while caring for children, all her life (siblings, her own children, later her own grandchildren). She had forgotten about her own personal life, needs and desires. While trying to ignore it, becomes clinically depressed. Youth had slipped away, time had forgotten her. Once a beautiful red head, and now merely a shell of her former self. Looking into the bathroom mirror one morning, she discovers the answer. All through her busy life, she held all the emotions in that a woman experiences. She had never talked to anyone before, but now in the privacy of her home, she could pour out all the pain and frustrations, that she had felt for so many years. Talking to the reflection in the mirror, and eventually finds peace of mind. Ive tried to describe how a woman would react under this stressful circumstances in which she finds herself. In trying to deal with her own personal life and still be responsible for the care of five grandchildren. I have written of a woman who is strong, life made her that way. She also has feet of clay. Ive tried to portray her as being very human, because we all are. In Maams story, she deals with the problems of aging, but at the same time, she sees humor in everyday happenings, and has the ability to laugh at herself as well with other people. The adventures of a woman, and Maam, are at times hilarious, but also truthful, but again, it is all part of lifes story. In my story of Maam, the woman has no name because she speaks for umpteen thousands of women all over the world. She also believes in her God, but the older she gets, the more issues she has. Maam is truthful about her triumphs and her failings as in all our lives, there are many.
