Book excerpt: Nous présentons dans ce document une étude sur les méthodes arborescentes pour la résolution de problèmes d'ordonnancement conduisant à une démarche globale pour l'aide au développement de PSE. Pour cela, nous avons réalisé une étude approfondie des méthodes arborescentes de la littérature telles que les PSE, mais également de méthodes approchées basées sur des arbres de recherche telles que les méthodes par faisceaux avec récupération, les méthodes à nombre limité de divergences ou encore les méthodes de type Branch-and-Greed. Cette étude nous a permis de montrer l'utilité d'une approche orientée objet pour la conception de nœuds de l'arborescence afin de les rendre réutilisables par la suite. Nos modèles objets de \noeud ont été réalisés à partir de l'étude de PSE remarquables de la littérature couvrant les principaux problèmes d'ordonnancement et les principaux schémas de séparation. Tout ce travail s'intègre à la plate-forme e-OCEA. Par ailleurs, nous avons étudié le problème P|ri,qi |Cmax plus précisément car il joue un rôle central dans la résolution de divers problèmes d'ordonnancement. Cette place privilégiée lui vaut l'attention de la communauté au travers de nombreux algorithmes comme par exemple des bornes supérieures, des bornes inférieures ou encore des tests de faisabilité appliqués à sa version décisionnelle. Nous avons alors proposé des nouveaux outils pour améliorer sa résolution, principalement basés sur l'amélioration de deux tests de faisabilité, l'introduction d'un nouveau schéma de séparation et la proposition de plusieurs méthodes approchées basées sur des parcours tronqués d'arborescence.

Due to this fact notable research contributions to Integer Programming have been made in very different branches of mathematics and its applications. Since these publications are scattered over many journals, proceedings volumes, monographs, and working papers, a comprehensive bibliography of all these sources is a helpful tool even for specialists in this field. I initiated this compilation of literature in 1970 at the Institut fur ~konometrie und Operations Research, University of Bonn. Since then many collaborators have contributed to and worked on it. Among them Dipl.-Math. Claus Kastning has done the bulk of the work. With great perseverance and diligence he has gathered all the material and checked it with the original sources. The main aim was to incorporate rare and not easily accessible sources like Russian journals, preprints or unpublished papers. Without the invaluable and dedicated engagement of Claus Kastning the bibliography would never have reached this final version. For this reason he must be considered its responsible editor. As with any other collection this literature list has a subjective viewpoint and may be in some sense incomplete. We have however tried to be as complete as possible. The bibliography contains 4704 different publications by 6767 authors which were classified by 11839 descriptor entries.

Book excerpt: Constraint Programming is a problem-solving paradigm that establishes a clear distinction between two pivotal aspects of a problem: (1) a precise definition of the constraints that define the problem to be solved and (2) the algorithms and heuristics enabling the selection of decisions to solve the problem. It is because of these capabilities that Constraint Programming is increasingly being employed as a problem-solving tool to solve scheduling problems. Hence the development of Constraint-Based Scheduling as a field of study. The aim of this book is to provide an overview of the most widely used Constraint-Based Scheduling techniques. Following the principles of Constraint Programming, the book consists of three distinct parts: The first chapter introduces the basic principles of Constraint Programming and provides a model of the constraints that are the most often encountered in scheduling problems. Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 are focused on the propagation of resource constraints, which usually are responsible for the "hardness" of the scheduling problem. Chapters 6, 7, and 8 are dedicated to the resolution of several scheduling problems. These examples illustrate the use and the practical efficiency of the constraint propagation methods of the previous chapters. They also show that besides constraint propagation, the exploration of the search space must be carefully designed, taking into account specific properties of the considered problem (e.g., dominance relations, symmetries, possible use of decomposition rules). Chapter 9 mentions various extensions of the model and presents promising research directions.
