Book Old Testament Criticism in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Old Testament Criticism in the Nineteenth Century written by John Rogerson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of Old Testament criticism requires the bridges of an important cultural gap because the home of the method and the place of its most creative use is still Germany. In this authoritative work, British scholar John Rogerson discusses two specific questions: how did the critical method arise in Germany in the nineteenth century, and how was its reception into England affected by the theological and philosophical climate? This is the first book which attempts to trace in such detail the impact of German critical method upon scholarship in England. As such it is a valuable contribution to the history of Old Testament scholarship and to the history of ideas. Part I examines German scholarship from 1800-60, from the founder of modern criticism, W. M. L. de Wette, through to the submergence of this early radicalism by the so-called positive criticism, and the confessional orthodoxy led by Hengstenberg. Part II investigates the use of Old Testament criticism in England with particular attention to contacts between Germany and England and to a comparison of the respective intellectual climates. Part III focuses again on German scholarship, particularly on the rebirth of de Wettian ideas, as expressed by Julius Wellhausen. It explains how the reception of Wellhausen in England involved a modification of his position in the light of neo-Hegelian philosophy.

Book The Arj n Tomb

Download or read book The Arj n Tomb written by Javier Álvarez-Mon and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a study of the archaeological evidence deriving from the Arjan tomb, an undisturbed elite burial found in 1982 near the town of Behbahan in south-western Iran. The fact that this burial can be confidently dated to ca. 600-550 BC presents an exceptional opportunity to reassess former views regarding the survival of Elamite traditions and the emergence of the Persian Empire. It is within this general framework that the fortuitous discovery of the Arjan tomb emerges as potentially one of the major archaeological discoveries of recent times. The present study offers a comprehensive analysis of the artistic and historical characteristics of the late Neo-Elamite period, and, by the same token, provides a new foundation for the genesis of the art of the Achaemenid Persian Empire.

Book Contribution to the Correction of the Public s Judgments on the French Revolution

Download or read book Contribution to the Correction of the Public s Judgments on the French Revolution written by J. G. Fichte and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reception history of the French Revolution in France and England is well documented among Anglophone scholars; however, the debate over the Revolution in Germany is much less well known. Fichte's Contribution played an important role in this debate. Presented here for the first time in English, Fichte's work provides a distinctive synthesis of Locke's "possessive individualism," Rousseau's general will, and Kant's moral philosophy. This eclectic blend results in an unusual rights theory that at times veers close to a form of anarchism. Written in 1792–93, just before Fichte moved to Jena to develop his philosophical system in a series of works—above all the Wissenschaftslehre of 1794—the Contribution provides invaluable insight into Fichte's early development. In addition, Fichte's work predates much of Kant's political philosophy, and can shed light on the rich dialogue in German political thought in the 1790s.
