Aux stades de la création, de la production ou de la consommation, les musiques n'échappent jamais aux enjeux socio-culturels d'un lieu, d'une époque, d'une communauté humaine. Conformes ou dissidentes à l'égard des logiques dominantes, elles demeurent productrices d'émotions esthétiques et porteuses des liens sociaux. Les musiques sont des enjeux de pouvoir et certaines logiques économiques ou politiques peuvent conduire à leur instrumentalisation. L'histoire est malheureusement riche de ces musiciens annexés par des régimes politiques au destin funeste. Mais les musiques sont aussi porteuses d'identités culturelles voire d'appels à la résistance. Structurant des groupes sociaux, des communautés nationales, elles peuvent contribuer, par leur capacité mobilisatrice, à accentuer ou plus fréquemment à faire tomber les murs du racisme, de l'intolérance ou du totalitarisme. C'est qu'il n'est de pratique musicale que dans l'échange. C'est bien là toute l'ambiguïté et la richesse de cet objet, à la fois verbe codé, situé, et langage universel, transculturel. Elles méritent donc pleinement que les sociologues, les artistes, les mélomanes et les citoyens que nous sommes tous tentent de franchir ces miroirs du son qui nous renvoient les images parfois brouillées de nos sociétés.

Book excerpt: For several centuries Cape Town has accommodated a great variety of musical genres which have usually been associated with specific population groups living in and around the city. Musical styles and genres produced in Cape Town have therefore been assigned an "identity" which is first and foremost social. This volume tries to question the relationship established between musical styles and genres, and social - in this case pseudo-racial - identities. In Sounding the Cape, Denis-Constant Martin recomposes and examines through the theoretical prism of creolisation the history of music in Cape Town, deploying analytical tools borrowed from the most recent studies of identity configurations. He demonstrates that musical creation in the Mother City, and in South Africa, has always been nurtured by contacts, exchanges and innovations whatever the efforts made by racist powers to separate and divide people according to their origin. Musicians interviewed at the dawn of the 21st century confirm that mixture and blending characterise all Cape Town's musics. They also emphasise the importance of a rhythmic pattern particular to Cape Town, the ghoema beat, whose origins are obviously mixed. The study of music demonstrates that the history of Cape Town, and of South Africa as a whole, undeniably fostered creole societies. Yet, twenty years after the collapse of apartheid, these societies are still divided along lines that combine economic factors and "racial" categorisations. Martin concludes that, were music given a greater importance in educational and cultural policies, it could contribute to fighting these divisions and promote the notion of a nation that, in spite of the violence of racism and apartheid, has managed to invent a unique common culture.

Les essais composant Sémiotique et vécu musical montrent dans quelle direction se dirigent les recherches de nos jours. L’analyse de l’expérience musicale, par exemple, détermine la réception affective, peut provoquer l’ébranlement intérieur, transformer le temps vécu, changer et déterminer les structures de l’expérience ainsi que l’expérientialité. Book excerpt: La recherche médicale s'est récemment tourné vers la musique et sur son impact auprès des patients Alzheimer. Ainsi, on sait que l'écoute de musique apaise les malades, améliore les performances motrices et révèle même que leurs compétences de mémoire musicale sont preservées. Concernant la mémoire autobiographique (Maut), élément essentiel constitutif de l'identité, des études ont montré l'effet bénéfique de la musique sur le rappel des souvenirs chez les patients Alzheimer. Le but de notre étude est d'évaluer l'effet de la présentation de musiques connues personnalisées sur les capacités de rappel en Maut chez 12 patients Alzheimer, Mini Mental State (MMS) entre 14 et 28, et 13 sujets témoins. Nos outils de recherche ont été le questionnaire de Maut de Kopelman et al. (A.M.I, 1989 ; version française, 1999) qui évalue la Maut dans sa composante sémantique et épisodique pour l'enfance, la période jeune adulte et le passé récent ; des extraits musicaux à fort poids émotionnel, choisis préalablement par les patients et sujets, et correspondant aux trois même périodes de vie précitées. Dans un premier temps, nous avons recueilli les scores du MMS et du questionnaire de Maut. Puis, six semaines après, nous avons revu les patients et sujets pour une deuxième passation mais l'évaluation de chaque période de vie a été précédé par l'écoute d'un extrait musical correspondant à cette période. En conclusion, nos résultats révèlent que l'écoute de musique familière améliore les capacités de rappel de souvenirs autobiographiques des patients Alzheimer pour les deux composantes de la Maut et aux trois périodes de vies évaluées. Ces donneés qui confirment le lien entre musique, émotion et mémoire peuvent alimenter le débat sur l'intérêt d'une stimulation "cognitive" régulière par la musique dans le cadre de la prise en charge de la maladie d'Alzheimer.

Book excerpt: In France during the 1960s and 1970s, popular music became a key component of socio-cultural modernisation as the music/record industry became increasingly important in both economic and cultural terms in response to demographic changes and the rise of the modern media. As France began questioning traditional ways of understanding politics and culture before and after May 1968, music as popular culture became an integral part of burgeoning media activity. Press, radio and television developed free from de Gaulle's state domination of information, and political activism shifted its concerns to the use of regional languages and regional cultures, including the safeguard of traditional popular music against the centralising tendencies of the Republican state. The cultural and political significance of French music was again revealed in the 1990s, as French-language music became a highly visible example of France's quest to maintain her cultural 'exceptionalism' in the face of the perceived globalising hegemony of English and US business and cultural imperialism. Laws were passed instituting minimum quotas of French-language music. The 1980s and 1990s witnessed developing issues raised by new technologies, as compact discs, the minitel telematics system, the internet and other innovations in radio and television broadcasting posed new challenges to musicians and the music industry. These trends and developments are the subject of this volume of essays by leading scholars across a range of disciplines including French studies, musicology, cultural and media studies and film studies. It constitutes the first attempt to provide a complete and up-to-date overview of the place of popular music in modern France and the reception of French popular music abroad.

Twice a decorated hero of the Great War, this Rear-Admiral of the French navy, scientist, inventor and moral philosopher, was also a highly esteemed composer during his lifetime, enjoying the same stature and celebrity as Faur Debussy and Ravel. Since his death, however, both Cras and his music have been almost completely overlooked. In this, the first critical biography of Cras, Paul-Andre Bempechat situates Henri Duparc's proteg‘s a missing link between the French post-Romantic generation of composers and the Impressionists. The book explores, both historically and analytically, the methodology by which Cras evolved his eclectic brand of Impressionism, striking the delicate balance between Celtic folk idioms and exoticisms inspired by his travels. His five patented inventions include the navigational gyrocompass, which bears his name, still in use to this day by the French navy, coast guard and boating afficionados.
