Download or read book Trafficking in Women in Canada written by Louise Langevin and published by Canadian Government Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains an analysis, from a feminist and intersectional perspective, of the legal framework governing 2 forms of trafficking in women in Canada, namely, the hiring of immigrant live-in caregivers, and the mail-order bride business. Immigrant live-in caregivers admitted into Canada under the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) may experience a situation of exploitation with the risk of violation of their fundamental rights. The 1st chapter of the report examines this question by analysing the LCP, legislation concerning the work of immigrant live-in caregivers, and contractual practices. It offers recommendations for rectifying the situation. Chapter 2 presents a portrait of mail-order brides and an examination of the unequal relationships that characterize this phenomenon. It then analyses the legal framework that governs the industry.

Download or read book Sentencing and Criminal Justice written by Andrew Ashworth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Ashworth expertly examines the key issues in English sentencing policy and practice including the mechanisms for producing sentencing guidelines. He considers the most high-profile stages in the criminal justice process such as the Court of Appeal's approach to the custody threshold, the framework for the sentencing of young offenders and the abiding problems of previous convictions in sentencing. Taking into account the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008 and the Coroners and Justice Act 2009, the book's inter-disciplinary approach places the legislation and guidelines on sentencing in the context of criminological research, statistical trends and theories of punishment. By examining the law in relation to elements of the wider criminal justice system, including the prison and probation services, students gain a rounded perspective on the relevant principles and problems of sentencing and criminal justice.

Download or read book Pandemic Societies written by Jean-Louis Denis and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many thought the changes taking place would be fleeting. It is now widely recognized that COVID-19 will not be the last pandemic in our highly interconnected world, and “pandemic societies” will be with us for some time. Pandemic Societies brings together experts in a wide range of academic disciplines to reflect on how their fields might be transformed in this new context. While the pandemic forces global institutions, such as the World Health Organization, to reimagine the ways in which they function, it also reaches into our everyday lives to change how we organize culture, performing arts, sports, tourism, and cities. Exploring how COVID-19 has altered people’s daily experiences – the ways they meet to play, to perform, and to entertain themselves – this book also pulls the lens back to take in the broader institutional and political contexts in which these quotidian activities are carried out. Examining the profound ways in which the COVID-19 pandemic has transformed every aspect of our lives, Pandemic Societies attempts to understand how we might act to steer this pandemic society, and how to reinvent institutions and practices that we think of as intrinsically face to face.

Download or read book A History of Human Rights in Canada written by Janet Miron and published by Canadian Scholars’ Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human rights, equality, and social justice are at the forefront of public concern and political debate in Canada. Global events--especially the "war on terrorism"―have fostered further interest in the abuse of human rights, especially when sanctioned or perpetuated by democratic governments. This groundbreaking contributed volume seeks to shed light on this topic by uniting original essays that examine the history of human rights in Canada. Contributors explore a variety of themes integral to the post-confederation period, including immigration and ethnicity, gender, sexuality, class, disability, state formation, and provincial-federal relations. Three key issues emerge throughout: incidents of discrimination in both government and society, the efforts of human rights and civil liberties activists to create a more open and tolerant society, and the implementation of state legislation designed to protect or enhance civil rights.
