Book Lyrical Iowa 2023 Our 78th Year

Download or read book Lyrical Iowa 2023 Our 78th Year written by and published by . This book was released on 2023-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lyrical Iowa 2023 is a 178 page, full-color gloss cover, 6 x 9" volume: the poems contained within these pages bring to light the myriad experiences that are the genesis of setting pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard. Here, Iowan poets explore their world through their love of family, horror at war and injustice, delight in nature and Iowa, fear for the planet, zest for life, memories of childhood, and much more. Yet, there often seems to be an underlying search for softness, silence, and sympathy/understanding, perhaps as shield against countless contemporary travails. Maybe it is more like a desire for kindness; this year, a third grader writes: "Roses are red. Violence is bad. / Work it out peacefully, when you are mad. / Do not yell. Do not cry, / We can be nice, yes, you and I."Lyrical Iowa 2023 features 354 poems (79 student and 275 adult) carefully selected from a total of almost 2,000 entries, arriving from 73 of Iowa's 99 counties. The Adult Division includes: IPA's Final Stage Poetry Slam's top three winners, Lucille Morgan Wilson Award (Adult General), Humorous Verse, the new ekphrastic Grant Wood Poetry Prize, Traditional Forms (ghazal, pantoum, sonnet, villanelle), Haiku, National/World Events and Poems for Children. In the Student Division, selections for prizes and publication were made from College, High School, Upper Grades, and Lower Grades. Cash prizes were awarded in all categories for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners and 1st, 2nd and 3rd honorable mentions were recognized.

Book The Iowa Anthology of New American Poetries

Download or read book The Iowa Anthology of New American Poetries written by Reginald Shepherd and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark collection features emerging poets who combine a commitment to innovation and experimentation with a love for the lyric tradition, whose poetry transcends mainstream and avantgarde practice to create new and exciting poetic territories. These new American poetries for the twenty-first century and beyond reach back toward the Modernists and even earlier lyric poetries (such as those of Wyatt, Donne, Keats, and Dickinson) and, simultaneously, reach forward to poetic possibilities not yet realized or even imagined. Most of the poets included here have won publication prizes, awards, and fellowships, and some have had their work anthologized. Others are at earlier stages of recognition but have published in major journals. All are writing highly accomplished work that will soon find a wider audience. One distinguishing feature of this collection is the inclusion of substantial artistic statements from each contributor, in which the poets discuss their works, their influences, their aims, and their poetics. These statements are invaluable in giving readers a point of entry to the poems and can contribute to the development of a conversation among American poets that tran

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Emerald Horizon, Cornelia Mutel combines lyrical writing with meticulous scientific research to portray the environmental past, present, and future of Iowa. In doing so, she ties all of Iowa's natural features into one comprehensive whole. Since so much of the tallgrass state has been transformed into an agricultural landscape, Mutel focuses on understanding today’s natural environment by understanding yesterday’s changes. After summarizing the geological, archaeological, and ecological features that shaped Iowa’s modern landscape, she recreates the once-wild native communities that existed prior to Euroamerican settlement. Next she examines the dramatic changes that overtook native plant and animal communities as Iowa’s prairies, woodlands, and wetlands were transformed. Finally she presents realistic techniques for restoring native species and ecological processes as well as a broad variety of ways in which Iowans can reconnect with the natural world. Throughout, in addition to the many illustrations commissioned for this book, she offers careful scientific exposition, a strong sense of respect for the land, and encouragement to protect the future by learning from the past. The “emerald prairie” that “gleamed and shone to the horizon’s edge,” as botanist Thomas Macbride described it in 1895, has vanished. Cornelia Mutel’s passionate dedication to restoring this damaged landscape—and by extension the transformed landscape of the entire Corn Belt—invigorates her blend of natural history and human history. Believing that citizens who are knowledgeable about native species, communities, and ecological processes will better care for them, she gives us hope—and sound suggestions—for the future.
