Download or read book In The Midst Of The Waves written by Antonio Restituyo and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-12-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reflection of what my life was, but perhaps, it is the reflection of what your life is. When you read it, you would observe that my wrong decisions and my false thoughts were not the reality of the dreams that I always had; that's why I found myself immersed in the middle of the waves, dark and strong waves that dragged me deeper and deeper, but thank God, He did not let me drown; He was always by my side, but I did not see Him. When I was about to die, He took me out in the middle of the waves and covered me with his light and with his love; you can also get out of the waves you are in today, look for Him, he is around you. Seek Him so that you can also testify to others, that God took me out, that God brought you out of the midst of the waves.
Download or read book Finding Fernanda written by Erin Siegal and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2012-05-15 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dramatic story of how an American housewife discovered that the Guatemalan child she was about to adopt had been stolen from her birth mother Over the last decade, nearly 200,000 children have been adopted into the United States, 25,000 of whom came from Guatemala. Finding Fernanda, a dramatic true story paired with investigative reporting, tells the side-by-side tales of an American woman who adopted a two-year-old girl from Guatemala and the birth mother whose two children were stolen from her. Each woman gradually comes to realize her role in what was one of Guatemala’s most profitable black-market industries: the buying and selling of children for international adoption. Finding Fernanda is an overdue, unprecedented look at adoption corruption—and a poignant, riveting human story about the power of hope, faith, and determination.
Download or read book Salt of the Earth written by Michael Wilson and published by Feminist Press at CUNY. This book was released on 1978 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Â Â Â This 1954 film, made in New Mexico by blacklisted Hollywood people and members of a progressive union, was denied distribution during the McCarthy era. The film documents an actual strike and is narrated by a Mexican-American woman who grows in consciousness and effectiveness through her participation in the community struggle. With the publication of this book, the Feminist Press reprints Wilson's screenplay and introduces an original work by Deborah Silverton Rosenfelt: an analysis of the background, history, and significance of both the strike and the film. Based partly on recent interviews, Rosenfelt's work includes a discussion of the change in status of the women who took part in this strike for better conditions.

Download or read book A More Profound Alleluia written by Leanne Van Dyk and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2004-12-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two questions lie at the heart of this rich, suggestive book: What are the theological implications of worship? and What are the liturgical implications of theology? Convinced that worship and theology are integrally related, the authors of A More Profound Alleluia show in practical terms how liturgy and doctrine fruitfully illuminate each other. Each chapter pairs an element of the worship service with related Christian teachings, clearly demonstrating how the great doctrines of the faith find their natural expression in the drama of worship and how the liturgy in turn finds its corollary in doctrine. The interrelation of theology and worship is illustrated with anecdotes from congregational life, resources drawn from church history, and themes from novels and films. Each chapter also includes two hymn texts that exemplify orthodox doctrine communicated through song. A More Profound Alleluia will be a valuable text for courses in theology or worship, will help worship leaders to plan services with greater theological depth, and will enhance worship for Christian believers generally. Download or read book The Curse of the Gypsy written by Alicia Gaspar de Alba and published by Arte Publico Press. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first story of this absorbing collection, Margarita—sixteen and married to a soldier who has gone off to fight in the first great war—meets and falls in love with Federico Garcia Lorca. He calls her “Margarita Petita,” and then turns her name into a poem. When he refuses to marry the widowed gypsy girl after a tryst at the river leaves her pregnant, her mother curses both Lorca and his offspring: “May they all die before they see the light of day.” And so Lorca is killed by fascists and his child dies in Margarita’s womb, where it remains—petrified—for 80 years. Mysteries and furtive desires pervade the enthralling stories in this group of ten the author calls a “deconstructed novel.” Rich in imagery and language, they chronicle the gypsy’s life, including banishment from Andalusia by her mother, marriage to a famous Mexican bull fighter and the lives of numerous descendants who ultimately leave Mexico for El Paso, Texas. In one of the final stories, “Calaveras in the Closet,” the gypsy’s extensive family comes together for her funeral, where several long-guarded secrets will suddenly come to light. Also included in this volume is a historical novella, Liberata Wilgefortis: The True and Tragic Story of the Bearded Female Saint, a mystical retelling of an ancient legend about the first bearded female saint of the Catholic Church whose cult was removed by Vatican II in 1969. Expertly weaving poetry, historical events, myth and legend into intriguing short fiction, Alicia Gaspar de Alba confirms her place as one of the leading contemporary Latinx voices.

Download or read book Fighting Monsters in the Abyss written by Harvey F. Kline and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2015-12-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies the complex constraints and trade-offs the second administration of Colombian President Uribe (2006–2010) encountered as it attempted to resolve that nation’s violent Marxist insurrection and to have a more efficient judicial system Fighting Monsters in the Abyss offers a deeply insightful analysis of the efforts by the second administration of Colombian President Álvaro Uribe Vélez (2006–2010) to resolve a decades-long Marxist insurgency in one of Latin America’s most important nations. Continuing work from his prior books about earlier Colombian presidents and yet written as a stand-alone study, Colombia expert Harvey F. Kline illuminates the surprising successes and setbacks in Uribe’s response to this existential threat. In State Building and Conflict Resolution in Colombia, 1986–1994, Kline documented and explained the limited successes of Presidents Virgilio Barco and César Gaviria in putting down the revolutionaries while also confronting challenges from drug dealers and paramilitary groups. The following president Andrés Pastrana then boldly changed course and attempted resolution through negotiations, an effort whose failure Kline examines in Chronicle of a Failure Foretold. In his third book, Showing Teeth to the Dragons, Kline shows how in his first term President Álvaro Uribe Vélez more successfully quelled the insurrection through a combination of negotiated demobilization of paramilitary groups and using US backing to mount more effective military campaigns. Kline opens Fighting Monsters in the Abyss with a recap of Colombia’s complex political history, the development of Marxist rebels and paramilitary groups and their respective relationships to the narcotics trade, and the attempts of successive Colombian presidents to resolve the crisis. Kline next examines the ability of the Colombian government to reimpose rule in rebel-controlled territories as well as the challenges of administering justice. He recounts the difficulties in the enforcement of the landmark Law of Justice and Peace as well as two significant government scandals, that of the “false positives” (“falsos positivos”) in which innocent civilians were killed by the military to inflate the body counts of dead insurgents and a second scandal related to illegal wiretapping. In tracing Uribe’s choices, strategies, successes, and failures, Kline also uses the example of Colombia to explore a dimension quite unique in the literature about state building: what happens when some members of a government resort to breaking rules or betraying their societies’ values in well-intentioned efforts to build a stronger state?
