Rome, 1920) is best known in Australia as the principal architect of the New Parliament House in Canberra. His latest major work is St. Patricks Cathedral, Parramatta, a new Cathedral complex which incorporates the old 1857 building which was destroyed by fire in 1996. The opening of the new Cathedral was celebrated on 29 November 2003. For Romaldo Giurgola this project provided an opportunity to reflect on his lifes work and toincorporate in the buildings, and the art works which were specially commissioned for them, the architectural principles he values most. These have been developed over many decades from the time of his education in Italy through to academic post and architectural projects undertaken in the USA, Europe, Australia and Asia. He regards architecture as a symbolic expression of peoples cultural identities and aspirations. With this in mind, he has created in Parramatta a singular masterpiece characterised by its simplicity, serenity and contemplative character. This beautifully written and illustrated publication provides eloquent insights into the art of architecture and Romaldo Giurgolas spatial philosophy.

Book Plotinus or the Simplicity of Vision

Download or read book Plotinus or the Simplicity of Vision written by Pierre Hadot and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-08-22 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its original publication in France in 1963, Pierre Hadot's lively philosophical portrait of Plotinus remains the preeminent introduction to the man and his thought. Michael Chase's lucid translation—complete with a useful chronology and analytical bibliography—at last makes this book available to the English-speaking world. Hadot carefully examines Plotinus's views on the self, existence, love, virtue, gentleness, and solitude. He shows that Plotinus, like other philosophers of his day, believed that Plato and Aristotle had already articulated the essential truths; for him, the purpose of practicing philosophy was not to profess new truths but to engage in spiritual exercises so as to live philosophically. Seen in this light, Plotinus's counsel against fixation on the body and all earthly matters stemmed not from disgust or fear, but rather from his awareness of the negative effect that bodily preoccupation and material concern could have on spiritual exercises.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Santo Daime is a syncretic religion that arose in the Amazon region of Brazil in the middle of the twentieth century and now has churches throughout the world. Its spiritual practice is based around the sacramental use of ayahuasca, a psychedelic brew consumed only within regular ceremonies. In Liquid Light, G. William Barnard—an initiate of the religion and a scholar of religious studies—considers the religious practice and transformative inner experiences of the Santo Daime community. Immersing readers in his own journeys into nonordinary states of consciousness, Barnard provides a vivid as well as introspective depiction of the dramatic ritual and visionary worlds that a practitioner of this tradition encounters. He combines striking first-person accounts of the ritual life of the Santo Daime with accessible examinations of the psychological and philosophical significance of mystical states and mediumship. Bridging insider and outsider perspectives on religious experience, Barnard demonstrates how the Santo Daime offers its practitioners a transformative and profoundly illuminating spiritual path. Liquid Light also reflects on the broader implications of psychedelics, arguing that entheogenic religions can shed light on a wide range of key philosophical questions concerning consciousness, selfhood, and reality.

Book Footlights

  • Author : Serge Daney
  • Publisher : MIT Press

  • Pages : 217 pages

Download or read book Footlights written by Serge Daney and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early essays of the most influential French film critic of the post-68 period. The Footlights (1983) was the first book by Serge Daney, a film critic admired in his lifetime by Gilles Deleuze and Jean-Luc Godard and recognized since his premature death in 1992 as the most important French writer on film after André Bazin. The Footlights stands apart in Daney’s body of work as the only collection of his essays he conceived of as a book, organizing his seminal pieces from Cahiers du Cinéma by theme and linking them with original texts that reflect in a personal voice on the doubts, battles, and illuminations of a generation of film lovers inspired by the explorations of Lacanian theory and roused by the collective aspirations of Maoist dogma. In pieces on fellow travelers Godard and Straub/Huillet, on films ranging from Pasolini’s Saló to Spielberg’s Jaws, and on the difference between film language and television discourse, Daney offers a definitive portrait of an era of radical hope and disappointment.
