Download or read book Lumber Recovery From Ponderosa Pine in Northern California Classic Reprint written by Susan Ernst and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-10 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lumber Recovery From Ponderosa Pine in Northern California Lumber recovery information from 942 logs from old and young-growth pon derosa pine (pinus ponderosa Dougl. Ex Laws.) trees in northern California is presented. More than 58 percent of the lumber volume was found in Shop, Moulding, and Select grades. About 25 percent of the total lumber volume was Moulding, and 24 percent was Standard and Better Dimension. Lumber volume recovery is presented on the basis of cubic feet and board feet. Volume recovery varied by scaling diameter but not by log grade. Value recovery and percent vol ume by lumber grade did vary by log grade and diameter, but no difference was found between the grade 1 and the grade 2 logs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ponderosa Pine Lumber Recovery: Young Growth in Northern California No. 3 Common was the largest lumber grade volume recovered. It represented percent of the No. 4 Grade logs and percent of the No. 5 grade logs. When both log grades are combined, recovery was percent. In contrast, the recovery of this lumber grade from Grade 5 old - growth ponderosa pine logs was reported by Wise (1964) as 22 percent. That comparison is based on a similar range of log diameters for both studies. Yield differences such as these show the influence of changes in resource characteristics. Book Lumber Recovery from Incense Cedar in Central California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lumber Recovery from Incense Cedar in Central California Classic Reprint written by W. Y. Pong and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lumber Recovery From Incense-Cedar in Central California A sample of 130 incense-cedar (libocedrus decurrens Torr.) trees was selected from the Eldorado National Forest in California. The trees were felled and bucked into 403 woods-length logs and processed through a sawmill cutting Shop and Common grades of lumber. Recovery estimates are shown for woods-length logs based on Scribner board-foot scale and cubic-foot scale. Analysis showed that board-foot recovery ranged from 169 percent for 6-inch logs to 103 percent for 34-inch logs. Cubic-volume recovery of rough green lumber increased from 50 percent to 62 per cent for the same range of diameters. Yields of higher quality lumber (shops and Moulding) increased as log diameter increased. Percentage of Scribner scaled defect was found to be correlated with several measures of product recovery. Keywords: Lumber recovery, lumber value, incense-cedar, log scale, California. This report presents lumber-recovery data for 130 incense-cedar trees selected from the Sierra Nevada of central California. Over 400 woods-length logs were processed through a sawmill cutting Shop and Common grades of lumber. Diameter of the study logs ranged from 6 to 34 inches. The average defect was from-4 to 17 percent Scribner and 3 to 10 percent cubic scale. Lumber recovery is presented on the basis of both board feet and cubic feet. Several measures of product recovery were correlated with scaling diameter. Regres sion models were developed for the following variables. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lumber Recovery From Old-Growth Coast Douglas-Fir The volume of commercial Coast Douglas-fir sawtimber is estimated to be in excess of 394 billion board feet. About 10 billion board feet of Coast Douglas fir is harvested annually. This is about 55 percent of the total softwood lumber production in the United States. There is an urgent need for better methods of appraising the quality of this important timber resource. Estimates of the recovery that can be obtained from Coast Douglas-fir sawtimber are needed by forest land managers, timber buyers, and timber processors for efficient utilization of the resource for lumber, veneer, pulp, or other products. Logs from similar live trees were sawn to compare their product recovery with that of logs from the dead trees. Generally, volume recovered from logs of trees dead 1 to 3 years was the same as that recovered from live trees. Less cubic volume was recovered from trees dead 4 or more years. Download or read book Red Rot of Ponderosa Pine Classic Reprint written by Stuart R. Andrews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Red Rot of Ponderosa Pine Long (25, 26) intensified his attack on the red rot problem in 1914. The results of his work, mainly on timber-sale areas in the Santa Fe National Forest of New Mexico, seemed to indicate that the decay was of minor consequence in blackjacks. In 1935 Pearson and Marsh (40) pointed out that the high percentage of cull from rot in ponderosa pine could be attributed to the general overmaturity of the forests, and that in future generations the percentage of heart-rot should decrease because few trees would attain an age of more than 200 years before cutting. At the same time, however, these authors cautioned that second-growth stands might be more subject to attack by decay fungi than old growth because of their more limby character. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood Residue From Primary Wood-Using Industries in California Not all of this wood can be used economically. Some is produced in plants with too low a volume, or too isolated, to pay the cost of collecting and transporting the wood to fiber indus tries. Nevertheless, the survey shows that most of the unused wood is concentrated in four sections of northern California and is strategically located to encourage development of new residue using industries. They could create new jobs and income without requiring an increased drain on the state's timber resources.
