Book Understanding Key Issues of Sustainable Wood Production in the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Understanding Key Issues of Sustainable Wood Production in the Pacific Northwest written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers involved with the Pacific Northwest (PNW) Research Station Sustainable Wood Production Initiative have outlined some of the barriers and opportunities for sustainable wood production in the region. Sustainable wood production is defined as the capacity of forests to produce wood, products, and services on a long-term basis and in the context of human activity and use. The collective findings of these papers suggest that in the future, the regions wood supply will primarily come from private land, and the barriers and opportunities related to sustainable wood production will have more to do with future markets, harvest potential, land use changes, and sustainable forestry options than with traditional sustained yield outputs. Private lands in the PNW should be able to sustain recent historical harvest levels over the next 50 years, but regional changes in sawmilling capacity and uncertain market conditions may affect wood production in the region. Public perceptions of forestry, land use changes, and alternative forestry options are also discussed. These papers present preliminary findings and proposals for future work designed to help us understand the key issues related to sustainable wood production.

Book Genetics of Wood Production

Download or read book Genetics of Wood Production written by Bruce J. Zobel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-12-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past years, a great deal has been learned about variation in wood prop erties. Genetic control is a major source of variation in most wood properties. Wood is controlled genetically both directly in the developmental or internal pro cesses of wood formation and indirectly by the control of tree form and growth patterns. Emphasis in this book will be on the internal control of wood production by genetics although there will be two chapters dealing with the indirect genetic control of wood, which was covered in detail in the previous book by Zobel and van Buijtenen (1989). The literature on the genetics of wood is very variable, SO'lle quite superficial, on which little reliance can be placed, and some from well-designed and correctly executed research. When suitable, near the end of each chapter, there will be a summary with the authors' interpretation of the most important information in the chapter. The literature on the genetics of wood can be quite controversial. This is to be expected, since both the environment and its interaction with the genotype of the tree can have a major effect on wood properties, especially when trees of similar genotypes are grown under widely divergent conditions. Adding to the confusion, studies frequently have been designed and analyzed quite differently, resulting in conflicting assessments of results.

Book Timber Ownership and Lumber Production in the Inland Empire Classic Reprint

Download or read book Timber Ownership and Lumber Production in the Inland Empire Classic Reprint written by David Townsend Mason and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Timber Ownership and Lumber Production in the Inland Empire Manufacturers' Association, as the association believes it constitutes a valuable contribution to a better understanding of the lumber industry. The mills that were covered by the field work were almost without exception members of this association and the bulk of its membership was covered, consequently it is believed that the study accurately reflects the condition of the industry represented by the association at the time it was made. It is recognized that some of the conditions have been altered by the war and by natural developments and changes in the industry itself, but the basic facts contained in the following study not only constitute a valuable record, but are in. Many instances of permanent value to anyone seeking a knowledge of the fundamental principles under which the industry operates. This Association regards this work as the most thorough and comprehensive economic study ever made of any section of the lumber industry.
