Book Daughters in Law

  • Author : Joanna Trollope
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2011-04-05

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An elegant, wry, and superbly nuanced story about a woman with three sons—and three daughters in law—who must come to terms with the new configuration of her family. As Anthony and Rachel Brinkley welcome their third daughter-in-law to the family, they don’t quite realize the profound shift that is about to take place. For different reasons, the Brinkleys’ two previous daughters-in-law hadn’t been able to resist Rachel’s maternal control and Anthony’s gentle charm and had settled into their husbands’ family without rocking the boat. But Charlotte—very young, very beautiful, and spoiled—has no intention of falling into step with the Brinkleys and wants to establish her own household. Soon Rachel’s sons begin to think of their own houses as home and of their mother’s house as simply the place where their parents live—a necessary and inevitable shift of loyalties that threatens Rachel’s sense of herself, breaks Anthony’s heart, and causes unexpected consequences in all the marriages. Then a crisis brings these changes to the surface, and everyone has to learn what family love means all over again.

Book Daughters of the Church

Download or read book Daughters of the Church written by Ruth A. Tucker and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich in historical events and colorfully written, this fascinating account of women in the church spans nearly two thousand years of church history. It tells of events and aspirations, determination and disappointment, patience and achievement that mark the history of daughters of the church from the time of Jesus to the present. The authors have endeavored to present an objective story. The very fact that readers may find themselves surprised now and again by the prominent role of women in certain events and movements proves an inequality that historical narrative has often been guilty of. This is a book about women. It is a setting straight off the record -- a restoring of balance to history that has repeatedly played down the significance of the contributions of women to the theology, the witness, the movements, and the growth of the church. An exegetical study of relevant Scripture passages offers stimulating thought for discussion and for serious reevaluation of historical givens. This volume is enriched by pictures, appendixes, bibliography, and indexes. Like many of the women whose stories it tells, this book has a subdued strength that should not be underestimated.

Book Luke s People

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2014-05-27
  • ISBN : 1630872806

Download or read book Luke s People written by Thomas J. F. Stanford and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Luke's People seeks to understand the men and women who met Jesus and the apostles as they are described in the Gospel of Luke and in the Acts of the Apostles in the way that Luke, who wrote these works, intended. This socio-historical literary study seeks to interpret Luke's writings in the light of the time when they were written on the basis that Luke was a skilled writer who wrote what he meant and meant what he wrote. It argues that Luke's depiction of women has been grossly misunderstood and finds that this misunderstanding may be due to a widespread attempt around the end of the first century to impose a patriarchal system of governance upon the church. Luke's People shows that Luke did not share such a patriarchal viewpoint but instead always presents Christian women as autonomous and agentic. It also finds that this patriarchal interpretation both distorts Luke's presentation of the rich and powerful, who are shown to receive their authority from the devil, and obscures the way in which the love of money corrupts men in his story.

Book The Kingdom according to Luke and Acts

Download or read book The Kingdom according to Luke and Acts written by Karl Allen Kuhn and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2015-04-14 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This substantial, reliable introduction examines the character and purpose of Luke and Acts and provides a thorough yet economical treatment of Luke's social, historical, and literary context. Karl Allen Kuhn presents Luke's narrative as a "kingdom story" that both announces the arrival of God's reign in Jesus and describes the ministry of the early church, revealing the character of the kingdom as dramatically at odds with the kingdom of Rome. Kuhn explores the background, literary features, plotting, and themes of Luke and Acts but also offers significant, fresh insights into the persuasive force of Luke's impressively crafted and rhetorically charged narrative.
