Book The Process of Democratization

Download or read book The Process of Democratization written by Gy?rgy Luk?cs and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1991-08-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Georg Lukacs's The Process of Democratization provides indispensable reading for an understanding of the revolution that swept Russia and Eastern Europe during 1989-1990. Lukacs, a spokesman for anti-Bolshevik communism, was the advance guard of anti-Stalinist reform. Written in the aftermath of the Prague Spring, his book was a precursor to many of the Gorbachev reforms. Lukacs was the leading communist intellectual in the world until his death. During his last 15 years, he embarked upon a massive effort to revive Marxism as philosophy, as aesthetics, and as politics. The Process of Democratization was part of this attempt at a Marxist renaissance. He would probably be surprised to find that the Second Russian Revolution of 1989-1990 moved far beyond his reformism, overthrowing even the anti-Stalinist communism that he fought to retain.

His focus was on improving the practice of software development in Indian CS & IT academia. But he thought that it is such a vital part of the CS & IT field and that it is so poor in many parts of Indian CS & IT academia, that he referred to his efforts as Indian CS & IT academic reform activism. Other contributors to the blog have given their views on certain topics. Main work period has been from 2011 to 2014 with a little work later, off & on. The main author is no longer active in this area. This book is aimed at helping other activists involved in improving the practice of software development in Indian CS and IT academia to get the views of the blog in a convenient form. The book may also be of interest to similar activists in other countries. About the author: Main author Ravi S. Iyer is a Physics graduate from Ruia college, University of Bombay (Mumbai) who was industry trained and later self-taught in software development. He worked in the international software industry (US, Europe, Japan, South Korea, India etc.) developing systems as well as applications software (CS & IT) for over 18 years after which he retired from commercial work. Later, mainly as a "visiting faculty", he offered free service of teaching programming courses (lab. courses) and being a "technical consultant" for student projects in a Maths & Computer Science department of a deemed university in India for 9 years.

Book Field Programmable Logic and Applications

Download or read book Field Programmable Logic and Applications written by Patrick Lysaght and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-06-22 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the papers presented at the 9th International Workshop on Field ProgrammableLogic and Applications (FPL’99), hosted by the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, August 30 – September 1, 1999. FPL’99 is the ninth in the series of annual FPL workshops. The FPL’99 programme committee has been fortunate to have received a large number of high-quality papers addressing a wide range of topics. From these, 33 papers have been selected for presentation at the workshop and a further 32 papers have been accepted for the poster sessions. A total of 65 papers from 20 countries are included in this volume. FPL is a subject area that attracts researchers from both electronic engine- ing and computer science. Whether we are engaged in research into soft ha- ware or hard software seems to be primarily a question of perspective. What is unquestionable is that the interaction of groups of researchers from di?erent backgrounds results in stimulating and productive research. As we prepare for the new millennium, the premier European forum for - searchers in ?eld programmable logic remains the FPL workshop. Next year the FPL series of workshopswill celebrate its tenth anniversary. The contribution of so many overseas researchers has been a particularly attractive feature of these events, giving them a truly international perspective, while the informal and convivial atmosphere that pervades the workshops have been their hallmark. We look forward to preserving these features in the future while continuing to expand the size and quality of the events.

Book Relating the Gospels

  • Author : Eric Eve
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2021-01-14
  • ISBN : 0567681149
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book Relating the Gospels written by Eric Eve and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-14 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the synoptic problem and argues that the similarities between the gospels of Matthew and Luke outweigh the objections commonly raised against the theory that Luke used the text of Matthew in composing his gospel. While agreeing with scholars who suggests that memory played a leading role in ancient source-utilization, Eric Eve argues for a more flexible understanding of memory, which would both explain Luke's access of Matthew's double tradition material out of the sequence in which it appears in Matthew, and suggest that Luke may have been more influenced by Matthew's order than appears on the surface. Eve also considers the widespread ancient practice of literary imitation as another mode of source utilization the Evangelists, particularly Luke, could have employed, and argues that Luke's Gospel should be seen in part as an emulation of Matthew's. Within this enlarged understanding of how ancient authors could utilize their sources, Luke's proposed use of Matthew alongside Mark becomes entirely plausible, and Eve concludes that the Farrer Hypothesis of Matthew using Mark, and Luke consequently using both gospels, to be the most likely solution to the Synoptic Problem.

Book Topics in Boundary Element Research

Download or read book Topics in Boundary Element Research written by Carlos A. Brebbia and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series has been developed in response to the interest shown in boundary ele ments by scientists and engineers. Whilst Volume I was dedicated to basic principles and applications, this book is concerned with the state of the art in the solution of time-dependent problems. Since papers have recently been published on this im portant topic it is time to produce a work ofa morepermanent nature. The volume begins with a chapter on the Fundamentals of Boundary Integral Equation Methods in Elastodynamics. After reviewing the basic equations of elasto dynamics, the wave equation and dynamic reciprocal theorems are stated and the direct and indirect boundary element formulations are presented. Eigenvalue problems are discussed together with the case of the Fourier transformations. Several applications illustrate the etfectiveness ofthe technique for engineering. Chapter 2 examines some ofthe various boundary integral equation formulations available for elastodynamic problems. In particular the displacement-traction for mulation is compared with the displacement-potential case. The special character istics ofthe elastodynamics fundamental solutions are discussed in detail and a criti cal comparison with the elastostatics case is presented. While the chapter is not meant to be a complete review of the work in the field, the original presentation of the problern and the suggestions for further work make an important contribu tion to the development ofthe method.

Book Research Directions in Parallel Functional Programming

Download or read book Research Directions in Parallel Functional Programming written by Kevin Hammond and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Programming is hard. Building a large program is like constructing a steam locomotive through a hole the size of a postage stamp. An artefact that is the fruit of hundreds of person-years is only ever seen by anyone through a lOO-line window. In some ways it is astonishing that such large systems work at all. But parallel programming is much, much harder. There are so many more things to go wrong. Debugging is a nightmare. A bug that shows up on one run may never happen when you are looking for it - but unfailingly returns as soon as your attention moves elsewhere. A large fraction of the program's code can be made up of marshalling and coordination algorithms. The core application can easily be obscured by a maze of plumbing. Functional programming is a radical, elegant, high-level attack on the programming problem. Radical, because it dramatically eschews side-effects; elegant, because of its close connection with mathematics; high-level, be cause you can say a lot in one line. But functional programming is definitely not (yet) mainstream. That's the trouble with radical approaches: it's hard for them to break through and become mainstream. But that doesn't make functional programming any less fun, and it has turned out to be a won derful laboratory for rich type systems, automatic garbage collection, object models, and other stuff that has made the jump into the mainstream.
