Estes textos, nos quais o poeta lusitano aborda sobretudo o tema do amor, começariam a ser desvelados somente em 1595, com a publicação de Rhythmas, reeditado em 1598 como Rimas. São as versões registradas nessas obras, principalmente, que recuperamos e apresentamos nesta edição de Sonetos: os mais belos versos de um dos maiores poetas da língua portuguesa. A obra traz os sonetos que fazem parte da bibliografia indicada em programas de vestibular.

Esse milagre de gênio se explica pelo fato de cada poema lírico de Camões ser fruto de uma situação vivida com intensidade, em uma vida de muitos amores, aventuras e desilusões. Luís de Camões (1525?-1580) nasceu em uma família da pequena nobreza lusitana, decaída e empobrecida, em local ignorado, talvez Lisboa. A formação cultural se deu em Coimbra, onde adquiriu a imensa cultura expressa em sua epopeia. Na mocidade, frequentou os meios aristocráticos e a boemia, pelas ruelas noturnas de Lisboa. Envolveu-se em brigas, relacionou-se com meretrizes do Bairro Alto. Por razões misteriosas, nunca frequentou os meios literários. Como soldado, combateu contra os mouros em Ceuta (Marrocos), perdendo um dos olhos em combate. Em 1552, após ferir um funcionário do Paço, é preso e enviado a Goa. Viveu dias difíceis no Oriente. Em um naufrágio na costa da Cochinchina perdeu os bens e a companheira chinesa, atingindo a costa a nado, com o manuscrito de Os Lusíadas. Só regressou a Portugal em 1569. Três anos depois publica Os Lusíadas. Graças ao poema, obteve uma pensão concedida pelo Estado, modesta e paga de maneira irregular. Dizem que curtiu miséria e fome.
